“Buffering” can mean a stuttering Streamlabs preview, lagged or skipped frames, dropped frames, or buffering for YouTube viewers. Those symptoms point to different parts of the stream, so check Streamlabs’ frame counters and YouTube’s stream-health messages before changing settings. Prerecorded video does not, by itself, establish a special failure mode: the problem may be rendering, encoding, network delivery, or playback.
First identify where the buffering happens
Before changing bitrate or replacing equipment, note exactly what you see. A local preview can stutter even when viewers receive a stable stream, and viewers can report buffering without a matching Streamlabs warning. Record the Streamlabs counters and any YouTube stream-health messages while the problem is happening; those details determine which troubleshooting branch to follow.

- Streamlabs preview stutters: check rendering and GPU load, then compare the preview with the YouTube player.
- Streamlabs reports lagged frames: Streamlabs associates these with compositor/rendering overload, often when GPU use is high.
- Streamlabs reports skipped frames: investigate encoder load, including CPU use if you use software x264.
- Streamlabs reports dropped frames: investigate network delivery, upload headroom, local network equipment, and ingest server selection.
- Only YouTube viewers report buffering: compare YouTube’s stream-health messages with the local preview and Streamlabs counters. The symptom alone does not establish whether the encoder, network, or YouTube playback path is responsible.
Streamlabs Support’s general guidance is that dropped frames are “almost always a network issue.” That is a troubleshooting rule of thumb, not a diagnosis of your particular connection. A speed test is only a snapshot; it cannot prove that upload will remain stable throughout a stream or rule out packet loss.
Use the frame counter to choose the right fix
| What you observe | Likely area to inspect | First useful action |
|---|---|---|
| Lagged frames or a stuttering local preview | Compositor/rendering and GPU load | Reduce output or scene demands and check GPU use. |
| Skipped frames | Encoder load, often CPU use with software x264 | Try a faster x264 preset or a supported hardware encoder; change one setting at a time. |
| Dropped frames | Network path, upload stability, or ingest server | Check total stream bitrate against sustained upload capacity and test the connection path. |
| YouTube viewers buffer but Streamlabs shows no matching warning | Not established by the symptom alone | Compare YouTube stream health, local preview, and the delivered player before altering encoder settings. |
Fix dropped frames and unstable delivery
1. Compare bitrate with available upload
Include audio and video when comparing the stream’s total bitrate with your available upload capacity. Leave headroom rather than setting the stream at the full result of a speed test: a one-time test does not establish sustained stability or rule out packet loss.

2. Isolate Wi-Fi and local equipment
If the streaming computer is on Wi-Fi, an Ethernet test can help determine whether the wireless path is contributing to the problem. Treat it as a comparison, not a guaranteed fix. Restart existing modem, router, or switch equipment and see whether the symptoms change before considering replacement hardware.
3. Check the ingest server and network path
Where Streamlabs offers server selection, try the closest or second-closest ingest server manually instead of Auto. If packet loss or connection trouble persists, Streamlabs suggests checking or reinstalling network drivers and contacting your internet provider. Its troubleshooting guidance also mentions outbound TCP port 1935; do not open ports blindly. Ask your network administrator or ISP/router provider for help with the network configuration.

4. Use Dynamic Bitrate only for network trouble
Streamlabs’ Dynamic Bitrate setting can lower bitrate when network conditions deteriorate and raise it toward the target as they recover. In Streamlabs Desktop, look under Settings > Advanced for Dynamically change bitrate when dropping frames while streaming; the wording may differ by version. This can help with network-related dropped frames, but it does not fix a CPU-bound encoder or an overloaded compositor.
Fix skipped frames and encoder overload
When skipped frames appear, check CPU use and the selected encoder. If you use software x264 and CPU use is high, try a faster preset to reduce encoding demand. If your system and Streamlabs version support it, compare a hardware encoder such as NVENC or AMD encoding. Change one setting at a time and observe the counters during a representative stream so you can tell which change helped.

Do not treat every frame warning as a reason to lower bitrate. Skipped frames point to encoding pressure; dropped frames point toward delivery. A bitrate reduction may not address a software encoder that cannot keep up.
Fix lagged frames and a stuttering preview
Lagged frames point toward rendering/compositor pressure, often associated with high GPU use. Reduce the output resolution or simplify demanding scenes, then check whether GPU load and the lagged-frame count improve. Streamlabs’ getting-started guidance describes 1280×720 as a possible performance/quality balance, not a universal YouTube requirement; your system and content determine whether it is suitable.

Streamlabs also recommends lowering game quality, limiting game frame rate, or using V-sync in gaming contexts. Those suggestions matter only if a game or another GPU-heavy task is running alongside the prerecorded video. A video-only scene does not benefit from game-specific changes unless a game is part of the workload.

Set up the YouTube encoder deliberately
Use YouTube’s current live encoder guidance for your chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec rather than copying settings meant for another platform. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, CBR, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval (not over four seconds). RTMPS is YouTube’s recommended secure delivery protocol. Confirm that your Streamlabs Desktop version supports the codec you intend to use.

These figures are the recommendations in YouTube Help’s retrieved encoder table; that page does not state a publication year. They are not a guarantee of stable delivery. Choose the row that matches your output and compare it with sustained upload capacity. YouTube recommends testing before going live with representative movement and audio, then monitoring stream health and messages during the event.
When the issue is starting the YouTube event
If the stream fails to start rather than buffering after it begins, check the event connection separately from performance troubleshooting. Streamlabs documents signing in with a YouTube account, creating an event in YouTube Studio, and selecting that event in the Streamlabs Go Live window. Its going-live troubleshooting also covers server reload and manual selection. These steps can address event or connection setup; they do not, by themselves, identify the cause of ongoing viewer buffering.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep prerecorded video live on YouTube without leaving Streamlabs or a home computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos; it does not broadcast from a camera. This changes where the stream runs, but it does not establish that any particular YouTube viewer-buffering issue will be solved.
- Nothing has to stay on at home; the stream runs from the cloud.
- Uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot rather than quality-based tiers.
- StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free, with no card required.
- Monthly: $9.99 per month.

What to record before asking for help
If the cause remains unclear, capture enough detail to distinguish the branches rather than reporting only “buffering.” Include the exact Streamlabs counter (lagged, skipped, or dropped), whether the local preview stutters, whether viewers or the archive show the problem, YouTube stream-health messages, the encoder and output settings, and whether the connection is wired or Wi-Fi. Without those observations, the symptom does not identify one certain fix.
