Streaming Ingestion: How to Send Video to YouTube Live

A practical guide to sending a video feed to YouTube Live: find your stream key, choose RTMPS or HLS, configure encoder settings, rehearse, and fix common connection problems.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

To send video to YouTube Live, create or select a stream in YouTube Studio, copy its stream URL and stream key into an encoder, configure a supported video and audio feed, then start the encoder and check the Live Control Room preview before going live. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingestion; HLS is an option for HDR or codecs that RTMP does not support when your encoder can send HLS.

What you need before sending a video feed

  • A YouTube channel that can access live streaming and a stream created or selected in YouTube Studio.
  • An encoder: software on a computer, a webcam-based setup, or a hardware encoder. The encoder must support the protocol and output settings you intend to use.
  • A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the full stream bitrate, plus headroom for network variation and other users.
  • Video and audio sources routed into the encoder. A pre-recorded video can be played through encoder software, but this setup sends the encoder’s output as a live feed; it does not itself grant rights to the video or music.

For a basic single-source production, a laptop and webcam may be sufficient. YouTube describes professional-grade hardware encoders as an option for higher-production events; choose equipment according to your camera and audio inputs, target quality, supported protocol, and need for backup failover rather than assuming a particular device is required. YouTube’s streaming tips cover preparation and equipment categories.

Set up the stream in YouTube Studio

  1. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live to open Live Control Room. Create a scheduled stream or select the Stream tab for an unscheduled stream.
  2. Open Stream settings and copy the stream URL and stream key. If you plan to use RTMPS, reveal and copy the RTMPS URL as described below; the default URL shown may be an ordinary RTMP address.
  3. Keep the stream key private. It functions like a password identifying where your encoder sends its feed. If it is exposed, a channel owner or manager can reset it; after a reset, replace the old key in every encoder that uses it. See Manage live stream settings.
  4. In the encoder, select a YouTube preset if it provides the correct protocol and settings. Otherwise, enter the copied server URL and stream key in the encoder’s streaming destination fields.

Choose RTMPS or HLS

RTMPS for standard live ingestion

YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension of RTMP. Use an encoder that supports RTMPS, then copy the RTMPS address from Live Control Room (the lock icon reveals it) and pair it with the stream key. Do not assume an encoder’s generic YouTube preset is using RTMPS: check its protocol or server field. If an SSL error persists, verify that the destination is actually RTMPS and try port 443 if your encoder permits it. YouTube’s setup details are in Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.

HLS when the video format requires it

YouTube positions HLS ingestion as an option for HDR or codecs not supported by RTMP. It requires an encoder that can output HLS. Select HLS when creating the appropriate stream key, use the HTTPS HLS URL supplied for that stream, and follow YouTube’s HLS setup instructions. For HDR, YouTube’s instructions say to leave manual resolution unchecked. See Set up an HLS stream.

Set encoder output settings

Choose settings that the encoder can produce, that YouTube supports for the selected protocol, and that your upload connection can sustain. YouTube says it detects encoder settings in the standard Live Control Room workflow and transcodes the incoming stream into viewer output formats. That does not guarantee a weak connection or incapable device can maintain your chosen feed; test the complete setup before an event. The current official settings table is the authority for combinations not listed here: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Core compatibility settings

  • Video codec: the current RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1. Codec support differs by protocol and use case; AV1 is not supported for HDR in the listed guidance.
  • Frame rate: up to 60 fps in the current RTMP/RTMPS table.
  • Rate control: use CBR (constant bitrate) for the listed RTMP/RTMPS settings.
  • Keyframes: YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval; do not exceed 4 seconds.
  • Audio: AAC or MP3 is listed. Five-channel-one audio is supported only with AAC over RTMP/RTMPS.
  • Picture format: the advanced guidance specifies square pixels, progressive scan, and Rec. 709 for SDR; it specifies H.265 for HDR.

Selected H.264 bitrate guidance

The following are YouTube’s published service configuration values, not independent performance measurements or a promise about what a particular computer or internet connection can sustain. The source page does not state a publication year; verify its current table when configuring a stream.

Output Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate

720p at 60 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps
2160p (4K) at 30 fps 11 Mbps 42 Mbps
2160p (4K) at 60 fps 14 Mbps 50 Mbps

These figures are for H.264. YouTube lists different values for other codecs; for example, its table gives 4 Mbps minimum and 10 Mbps recommended for AV1 or H.265 at 1080p/30, and 10 Mbps minimum and 35 Mbps recommended for AV1 or H.265 at 2160p/60. Check the full table for any resolution, frame rate, codec, or protocol combination not shown rather than interpolating.

Check upload capacity and rehearse

YouTube recommends leaving about 20% of upload bandwidth beyond the total stream bitrate. Check outbound upload capacity rather than relying on a download-speed result, and account for other devices or users sharing the connection. A stream close to the available upload limit can become unstable when network use changes. YouTube’s advice is in Streaming tips.

  • Run a rehearsal with movement and sound representative of the actual program; static screens and silence do not test the same encoder load or audio routing.
  • Start early enough to inspect Live Control Room’s preview, stream health, and messages before the planned start.
  • Check the picture and audio in the preview, then verify the watch page and playback on a phone or other intended viewer device.
  • If using a backup encoder or failover process, rehearse the switchover instead of assuming it will work during an interruption.
  • For scheduled productions, YouTube advises setting up in advance and starting the encoder before the event.

Start the broadcast and end it cleanly

  1. Start streaming from the encoder. Wait for YouTube Live Control Room to receive the feed and show its preview and stream health information.
  2. Review the image, sound, and status messages. Correct problems before inviting viewers to watch.
  3. When the preview is ready, select Go live in Live Control Room if the stream has not already been set to start automatically. For a scheduled event, confirm the event’s start controls and timing in Studio.
  4. When finished, end the event in YouTube and stop sending content from the encoder. YouTube’s encoder guide says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume that applies to a stream lasting 12 hours or longer. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Video rights and channel policies still apply

Sending a video through an encoder does not make it permissible to broadcast. Use footage, music, and other material you have permission to use, and check YouTube’s applicable copyright and live-stream rules before scheduling a public stream. A technically healthy ingest feed is not a determination that the material complies with YouTube policy or that a channel will qualify for monetization. In particular, do not treat continuous or repeated playback as proof that a channel meets YouTube’s reused-content requirements; assess the current policy and the rights and value of the content independently.

Troubleshoot common ingestion problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check
Encoder will not connect or the key is rejected The encoder has an outdated or mistyped key, or its YouTube integration needs updating. Copy the current stream key from Live Control Room, update the encoder’s destination, and check for an encoder integration update. If the key may have been exposed, reset it and update all encoders that use it. See Manage live stream settings and Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream.
RTMPS SSL error or timeout The server address may be ordinary RTMP rather than RTMPS, or the encoder may not support RTMPS. Confirm the encoder supports RTMPS, copy the RTMPS URL rather than the default RTMP URL, and try port 443 if the SSL error persists and the encoder supports specifying a port. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.
Video drops, buffers, or has unstable quality The bitrate may exceed available upload capacity, or the connection may be unreliable or shared. Compare the selected bitrate with actual outbound capacity, retain the recommended headroom, reduce competing network use, and test the connection under realistic conditions. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
Picture or sound is poor or missing The source signal, encoder routing, or output settings may be wrong. Inspect the audio and video sources entering the encoder, verify its codec and settings, and repeat a rehearsal with representative movement and sound. Check Live Control Room messages and the official encoder settings guidance.
Need HDR or a codec unavailable over RTMP The selected protocol may not carry the required format. Check whether the encoder supports HLS, then configure an HLS stream key and HTTPS HLS URL using YouTube’s HLS instructions.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a YouTube channel that keeps looping uploaded videos 24/7, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative to leaving an encoder computer running at home. The setup is: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded video to YouTube; it does not go live from a camera.
