There is no universal winner in the Raspberry Pi vs VPS cost for looping prerecorded videos on YouTube: a Pi has an upfront hardware cost plus electricity and depends on your home power and internet, while a VPS has a recurring fee and may charge for outbound traffic. The right choice depends especially on whether your video can be sent without re-encoding, how much data your chosen stream sends, and how much setup and recovery work you are willing to handle.
What you are paying for
Compare each setup over the same period, such as 12 months. A low monthly VPS headline price is not a full cost estimate, and a Pi’s power-supply rating is not its measured electricity use.

| Upfront or base cost | Board, suitable power supply, boot media, and any cooling, enclosure, cables, or replacement allowance. Use prices available in your region. | Monthly plan price; storage or IPv4 charges may apply depending on the provider and plan. |
| Recurring power or hosting | Measure average wall power during the intended workload; multiply by operating hours and your local electricity tariff. | Pay for the selected plan. DigitalOcean’s cited examples are provider-specific, not a universal VPS price. |
| Internet or data transfer | Your home connection must provide stable upload. Include an internet-plan increase only if the stream causes an incremental charge or upgrade. | Check the provider’s outbound transfer allowance and overage rules against the stream’s data use. |
| Compute for encoding | Depends on whether the file can be sent as-is or must be encoded in real time; test the exact configuration. | Depends on the same encoding requirement. A low-cost plan price does not demonstrate it can encode a particular file. |
| Operations and recovery | Depends on home power, internet, device health, and your ability to monitor and restart the process. | Removes the home device and connection from the sending path, but still requires setup, stream-key protection, monitoring, and recovery. |
Estimate YouTube stream data before choosing a VPS
YouTube recommends 5 Mbps for H.264 1080p30 ingest. At a constant 5 Mbps, the arithmetic is about 54 GB per 24-hour day or 1.62 TB per 30 days in decimal units, before protocol overhead: bitrate × seconds streamed ÷ 8. Actual traffic and provider accounting may differ, so verify the configured bitrate and the VPS plan’s billing rules.
For comparison, YouTube lists 3 Mbps as the recommended H.264 720p30 bitrate, with a 3–8 Mbps range. Use settings appropriate to your resolution, frame rate, and codec, and leave upload headroom rather than treating a minimum as a comfortable target. YouTube supports RTMP and RTMPS encoder ingest and recommends RTMPS: “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP video protocol.” YouTube Help: encoder settings.

DigitalOcean examples are a baseline, not a recommendation
DigitalOcean’s pricing page, accessed 3 October 2026, lists these Basic Droplet examples. Its bandwidth documentation, last verified 14 September 2026, says additional outbound transfer is billed at $0.01/GiB, inbound transfer is free, and the included allowance is pooled at team level. Confirm current plan terms before purchase.
| DigitalOcean Basic example | Included transfer | Storage | Listed price |
|---|---|---|---|
| 512 MiB RAM, 1 vCPU | 500 GiB | 10 GiB SSD | $4/month |
| 1 GiB RAM, 1 vCPU | 1,000 GiB | 25 GiB SSD | $6/month |
| 2 GiB RAM, 1 vCPU | 2,000 GiB | Not stated on the cited summary | $12/month |
These are DigitalOcean prices, not prices for all VPS providers or proof that any listed plan can encode a chosen video. At the cited 5 Mbps example, 1.62 TB of monthly stream traffic exceeds the 500 GiB and 1,000 GiB examples if all outbound stream traffic is charged against those allowances. The 2,000 GiB example is closer on paper, but still is not a workload test or a guarantee of fit. DigitalOcean lists extra outbound transfer at $0.01/GiB; confirm how your selected plan accounts for streaming traffic.

Calculate a Raspberry Pi’s actual running cost
For Pi electricity, use the device’s measured wall draw during the stream—not the power supply’s rated capacity. Raspberry Pi recommends a 27 W USB-C supply for Pi 5 and a 15 W USB-C supply for Pi 4 Model B/Pi 400; these are supply recommendations, not claims about continuous device consumption. See Raspberry Pi getting-started documentation.
- Assemble the full configuration you intend to run, including the Pi, power supply, storage, and any cooling or enclosure.
- Measure wall power while it sends the actual file using your intended settings. No reliable figure establishes the power draw for every Pi and this specific workload.
- Calculate energy cost over your comparison period: average watts ÷ 1,000 × operating hours × your local price per kilowatt-hour.
- Add hardware and any incremental internet-plan charge. Treat your time spent monitoring or restoring the stream as an operational cost, rather than inventing a universal monetary value for it.
Hardware prices are regional and change over time. Raspberry Pi’s 2 February 2026 announcement described memory-price increases affecting some Pi 4 and Pi 5 products; it does not establish the current local price of a complete streaming setup. Check local availability and prices for the exact board and accessories you would buy.

Decide whether you can stream the video without re-encoding
If the prerecorded file’s codec, resolution, frame rate, audio, and container are suitable for the intended YouTube stream, it may be possible to send it without real-time transcoding. If you must encode or transcode it live, CPU or GPU capacity becomes a central requirement on either a Pi or a VPS. The available sources do not establish a benchmark for a specific Pi or VPS configuration, so test the exact file and setup before relying on it unattended.
A Pi may work as a low-power sender for a compatible file, but suitability depends on the workload and sustained operation. A VPS removes the home computer and connection from the sending path, not the need to configure the sender and check that it works. Do not infer encoding capability or continuous-stream suitability from a plan’s price alone.

Configure and check the YouTube live stream
- Enable live streaming in advance. YouTube says first-time live-stream enabling may take up to 24 hours.
- Create or open the live stream in YouTube Studio. Copy its stream URL and key into your encoder or sending process. Keep the stream key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to send to your stream.
- Choose ingest settings. YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1; it lists frame rates up to 60 fps, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and says the keyframe interval should be two seconds and must not exceed four seconds. RTMPS is recommended because it encrypts the stream to Google’s servers. Match bitrate to codec, resolution, and frame rate.
- Test before relying on the stream. Check the picture, sound, continuity, and YouTube stream health using the actual sending setup. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health during the event.
- Plan for interruption and archiving. A home Pi can be interrupted by home power or internet problems; a VPS process still needs monitoring and a recovery plan. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, so do not assume an uninterrupted archive for a longer stream.
See YouTube Help: live streaming on YouTube for the platform’s setup guidance.
Which setup is likely to suit you?
- Choose a Pi when you already have suitable hardware, can provide stable home power and upload, can measure its actual running cost, and can manage the process and recovery yourself.
- Choose a VPS when you want the sending machine and connection outside your home, can administer a server, and have verified both compute needs and transfer cost for your bitrate and schedule.
- Do not choose on the entry price alone. The lowest plan may not cover a full month’s outbound stream data, and its CPU may not suit real-time encoding. Likewise, a Pi is not automatically cheaper once hardware, electricity, and attention are counted.
