Stream Sponsorships: FAQs and Guidelines for Creators

A practical guide to livestream sponsorships: platform controls, clear and repeated disclosures, honest endorsement claims, Twitch opportunity tools, and deal terms to settle before you say yes.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before you accept a livestream sponsorship, confirm what you must deliver, disclose the relationship clearly, and enable the platform’s required branded-content controls. A free product can count as compensation just as cash can. On Twitch, use the Branded Content tool when branded content is a central and intentional part of the stream; on YouTube, declare paid promotion in Studio. In either case, make the relationship obvious to viewers—including people who join late or watch with the sound off.

What counts as a stream sponsorship?

A sponsorship is not limited to a cash payment. Twitch and YouTube both treat an exchange of value as relevant: payment, free products or services, and other benefits may make content branded. Twitch’s examples include product placements, endorsements, sponsored gameplay, paid unboxings, channel sponsorships, branded panels, and stream-logo overlays. YouTube includes content influenced by a brand partner in exchange for value.

Look at the actual relationship, not just the label in a contract or brief. If a brand gave you something, paid you, or otherwise influenced the content in return for a benefit, check the platform’s current rules and disclose the connection where required. Twitch’s Terms of Service and Branded Content Guidelines explain Twitch’s approach; YouTube’s branded content policies explain YouTube’s.

How to disclose a sponsorship on Twitch

Twitch’s Branded Content Guidelines say creators must use the Creator Dashboard disclosure tool for branded content when it is a central and intentional element of the livestream. Twitch’s Terms of Service say creators who publish branded content agree to use the tool. The tool provides written disclosure to viewers, but it does not remove your responsibility to follow applicable laws or make the relationship clear.

When Twitch’s tool is expected

Use the tool for a stream built around sponsored gameplay, a paid product demonstration, an endorsement, or another deliberate promotion. Check that the promoted product or service is permitted under Twitch’s current policy before the broadcast.

Examples Twitch says do not, by themselves, require the tool

  • A sponsor panel on your channel page while you are offline.
  • A product visible in your room without paid, active promotion.
  • An affiliate link shared in response to a viewer’s community question.

These are examples about Twitch’s tool policy, not blanket exemptions from any separate legal duty to disclose a material connection. For Twitch’s exact current requirements and definitions, consult its Branded Content Guidelines and Terms of Service.

How to disclose a sponsorship on YouTube

YouTube says creators must enable the paid-promotion declaration in Studio when content contains branded content. Its policy applies to livestreams as well as videos, descriptions, comments, Shorts, and other YouTube features. A platform declaration is not a substitute for making the relationship clear and prominent to viewers or meeting applicable legal obligations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before the stream, open the livestream’s settings in YouTube Studio and enable the paid-promotion declaration. Studio labels and page layouts can change, so use YouTube’s current branded content policy and instructions if the control has moved. Also check the policy for the product, audience, and relevant geography: YouTube lists some categories as prohibited and others as restricted. Examples it identifies include weapons or ammunition, recreational drugs, hacking software, counterfeit products, and academic essay-writing services as prohibited categories; alcohol, financial services, healthcare and medicines, gambling, and election or political content are examples of restricted categories. The lists are not exhaustive and may change.

What should you say—and how often?

Use plain words that accurately describe the arrangement, such as “This stream is sponsored by [Brand]” or “[Brand] gave me this product to try.” Match the wording to what actually happened and use the language of the endorsement. A vague label or platform badge may not tell viewers whether you were paid, received a free product, or have another connection.

Put the disclosure where viewers will notice it

The FTC’s 2019 staff guide recommends putting disclosures with the endorsement and making them hard to miss. For video endorsements, it recommends an in-video disclosure rather than relying only on the description. Using both spoken audio and visible on-screen text can reach people who watch muted or miss a visual notice.

Repeat it during a livestream

Do not rely only on an opening announcement for a long stream. Viewers can join at any point and miss it. The FTC’s 2023 endorsement FAQ addresses a multi-hour gaming stream directly: it recommends periodic disclosures or a continuous clear and conspicuous disclosure, plus a disclosure in the stream description before viewers click through. The FTC’s 2019 guide likewise says a livestream disclosure should be repeated periodically. Put the notice in the description, say it aloud during the stream, and keep a readable on-screen notice visible when practical.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The FTC materials describe U.S. guidance. Legal requirements vary by jurisdiction, and a platform control does not automatically meet every legal obligation. Consult the relevant regulator’s current guidance or qualified counsel when a deal raises material legal questions. See the FTC’s Disclosures 101 for Social Media Influencers and Endorsement Guides FAQ.

Keep sponsored claims honest

A sponsor’s talking points do not justify saying something you do not know to be true. FTC staff guidance says creators should not describe an experience they have not had, praise a product they believe is poor, or make claims that require evidence the advertiser does not have. Describe your own experience accurately, distinguish opinion from factual claims, and ask the sponsor to substantiate claims before repeating them. If you cannot verify a claim or endorse it honestly, leave it out or decline that part of the brief.

Common sponsorship disclosure mistakes

  • Disclosing only at the start: Late arrivals may never see or hear it. Repeat it periodically or keep a continuous, clear notice.
  • Using only the description: Viewers may not read it. Include an in-stream disclosure as well.
  • Using only a platform control: Twitch’s tool or YouTube’s declaration may not explain the specific connection clearly enough in every context. Add a plain-language viewer-facing disclosure.
  • Calling a free product “not sponsored”: Value does not have to be cash. Explain the actual relationship.
  • Repeating unsupported sponsor claims: Do not imply experience you lack or make claims without adequate support.
  • Assuming a policy example covers every case: Platform rules and legal obligations are separate, and category restrictions may depend on product, geography, and audience.

Frequently asked sponsorship questions

Is a free product enough to require disclosure?

It can be. Twitch and YouTube both include non-cash value, such as goods or free products, in their descriptions of branded content. Check the applicable platform rules and disclose the relationship clearly.

Is a platform’s disclosure tool enough by itself?

Not necessarily. Use controls required by the platform, then make sure viewers can understand the specific connection. The FTC cautions that a platform tool alone may not communicate the relationship effectively in every context.
