Use browser screenshots to catch visual regressions in a consistent rendering environment, then use previews from real email clients to check how inbox software renders the message. A browser baseline is useful for fast iteration, but it does not prove compatibility with Gmail, Outlook, or other email clients.
What browser screenshot comparisons can—and cannot—test
A browser screenshot comparison checks whether a template looks different from a saved reference when rendered under the same browser conditions. It is useful for spotting changes to spacing, typography, alignment, colors, and other visible details.

It does not reproduce every email client’s rendering engine. Litmus distinguishes its Builder Browser view, which uses the browser’s native rendering engine, from Email Previews, which capture static screenshots in selected email clients. Litmus also describes Proof as a browser-rendered HTML view rather than a rendering in a specific email client (Litmus Builder preview pane; Litmus Proof).
Use both kinds of checks when you need confidence in an email campaign: browser comparisons for repeatable visual regression checks, and client previews for the clients your audience uses.

Build a stable browser screenshot test
1. Fix the rendering conditions
Render the email HTML in the same browser environment for the baseline and each later run. Set the viewport to the email width you want to inspect, use consistent test data, and wait for fonts and images to settle before capturing a full-page screenshot. Keep the browser version, operating system, viewport, and relevant rendering settings unchanged.
Playwright warns that screenshot output can vary with the host OS, browser version and settings, hardware, power source, headless mode, and other factors. For that reason, create and compare baselines in a controlled, repeatable environment rather than comparing captures from different machines or configurations (Playwright visual comparisons).

2. Review the first capture before saving it
Inspect the initial screenshot and confirm it shows the intended design before accepting it as the reference. Playwright creates a reference screenshot on the first run, then compares later runs against that snapshot. If a design change is intentional, review the new appearance and update the baseline deliberately using the snapshot-update option documented by Playwright; do not accept every changed screenshot automatically.

- Use the same viewport and capture scope each time. A viewport capture and a full-page capture are not equivalent.
- Use the same browser, OS, and rendering mode for reference and comparison runs.
- Keep test content stable so changing names, dates, or other data do not create irrelevant diffs.
- Wait for remote images and fonts to load before capture; investigate missing assets rather than approving a misleading baseline.
Add previews from actual email clients
Choose client previews according to your readership and the clients your campaigns are expected to support. Include the relevant desktop, mobile, and webmail environments rather than treating one browser screenshot as universal evidence.

Litmus Previews & QA lets teams select email clients, view full-length previews, and compare selected previews side by side. Its client previews are separate from the live browser pane, so rerun or save previews after editing the template; they do not update live with each change (Litmus Previews & QA pre-send testing guide; Litmus Builder preview pane).
Compare the same conditions across clients
- Rendering target: distinguish browser output from email-client output; they answer different questions.
- Client coverage: note which desktop, mobile, and webmail clients were previewed.
- Capture scope: compare full-length previews with full-length previews, not with a cropped viewport.
- Image state: inspect how the message looks with images enabled and disabled.
Test remote images and image-blocked views
Check the template both with images enabled and with images blocked. Litmus says test images must be hosted on the sender’s server or email service provider and use absolute URLs; CID and base64 embedded images do not render in iOS previews. Its guidance on this point was last updated February 21, 2025 (Images in Litmus for email testing).
If an image is absent, verify that its URL is publicly reachable and absolute, then check the preview’s image-loading condition. A screenshot with images blocked is also a useful way to assess whether the message remains understandable without them.
Do not treat screenshots as functional tests
A screenshot shows an appearance at a point in time; it does not establish that links work or that animated content behaves correctly. Email on Acid describes sending an email to each client application and stitching the resulting captures into a JPG; it notes that the stitched image cannot be used to click links or preview animated GIFs (Email on Acid: How does your email testing work?). Verify destinations by testing links separately, and inspect animated content with a method that can show its animation.

For a clean screenshot of a rendered web page, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-call screenshot API. It is useful for capturing the page that hosts or previews your template, but it does not replace previews in actual email clients.
For API parameters and options, see the ScreenshotNeo documentation.
Quick Recap
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card required; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. See ScreenshotNeo for product details, then sign up free.

Troubleshoot misleading diffs and missing previews
- Many unrelated pixels changed: check whether the browser, OS, viewport, headless mode, or other rendering settings changed. Restore the baseline environment and compare again.
- Images are missing: confirm that test assets are publicly reachable through absolute URLs, and check whether images are enabled in the preview. Litmus notes that CID and base64 images do not render in iOS previews.
- The email-client preview looks stale: rerun or save the preview after edits; Litmus says client screenshots do not update live like the Builder browser pane.
- A screenshot seems to confirm a link or animation: it cannot. Test link destinations and animated behavior separately.
- A new screenshot differs after a deliberate redesign: review the output first, then update the reference snapshot intentionally rather than treating the diff as an unexplained failure.
