Strategy reported $2.8 billion in net income for the third quarter of 2025, but it did not generate that profit by selling Bitcoin. The company recorded a $3.9 billion unrealized gain as the fair value of its Bitcoin holdings rose. That distinction matters: the gain lifted reported earnings, but it was not $3.9 billion in cash proceeds.
What Strategy reported for Q3 2025
For the three months ended September 30, 2025, Strategy reported net income of $2.8 billion, or $8.42 per diluted share. Operating income was $3.9 billion and included a $3.9 billion unrealized gain on digital assets, principally its Bitcoin holdings. The company said this was its third reporting period using fair-value accounting for digital assets. Strategy’s October 30, 2025 results release gives the quarter’s figures.

The reported net income and the unrealized gain are different measures: the first is the quarter’s bottom-line result; the second is a component that helped produce it. The figures should not be read as evidence that Strategy sold Bitcoin or received the gain in cash.

Why Bitcoin’s price affected earnings
Under the fair-value accounting standard ASU 2023-08, Strategy measures its digital assets at fair value and recognizes changes in that value in its income statement. When the measured value rises, the increase can create an unrealized gain; when it falls, the change can create an unrealized loss. An unrealized gain reflects a change in the accounting value of assets the company still holds, not a sale.

That accounting makes reported earnings highly sensitive to Bitcoin’s market price. Strategy’s Q3 release specifically cautioned that earnings are extremely sensitive to that price. As a result, a large reported profit in a rising-price period can coexist with a much smaller operating business, and a subsequent decline can reverse the direction of the accounting effect.
The software business was much smaller than the Bitcoin-related accounting movement
Strategy’s software business reported $128.7 million in revenue for Q3 2025, up 10.9% year over year, and $90.7 million in gross profit. Those are operating-business figures, distinct from the billions of dollars in digital-asset fair-value movement that drove the headline result. The company’s release reports both sets of figures.

What Strategy’s Bitcoin holdings were worth at the time
As of October 26, 2025, Strategy reported holding 640,808 Bitcoin at a total cost of $47.44 billion, or $74,032 per Bitcoin. It valued those holdings at $70.9 billion using an approximate Bitcoin price of $110,600 on October 24, 2025. These are company-reported, dated figures from the Q3 release—not current holdings or a current valuation.
Why the next reported quarter matters
The Q3 2025 profit is a historical result, not a stable measure of what Strategy earns each quarter. In the later reported quarter, Q2 2026, Strategy recorded an $8.22 billion net loss, including an $8.32 billion unrealized loss on digital assets; revenue was $122.4 million. Its Q2 2026 results release shows how quickly fair-value movements can change the income statement.

How to interpret Strategy’s BTC Yield and BTC Gain measures
Strategy also publishes Bitcoin Per Share, BTC Yield, BTC Gain, and BTC $ Gain as supplemental, company-defined key performance indicators. The company says they help management assess whether it is raising and deploying capital to increase Bitcoin per share. They are not traditional measures of financial performance, valuation, liquidity, or shareholder investment return. Strategy notes that BTC Yield is not equivalent to “yield” in the traditional financial context, and that BTC $ Gain does not represent a fair-value gain on Bitcoin holdings. A positive BTC $ Gain therefore should not be mistaken for a positive accounting gain or cash income.

A rise in Bitcoin’s recorded value can increase reported earnings without producing cash available to meet obligations. As of June 30, 2026, Strategy reported approximately $6.75 billion in indebtedness and warned that its Bitcoin holdings are less liquid than cash and may not be as available to meet liquidity needs. Those disclosures are relevant context for the balance sheet, but they do not turn Q3 2025’s unrealized gain into cash.

Nor is Strategy stock the same thing as direct ownership of Bitcoin. The company’s earnings, debt, financing decisions, and its own Bitcoin-related KPIs all affect the business; its reported company metrics are not an investor’s return on the shares.
