Jagex apologized after viewers spotted an apparent six-fingered hand and other visual oddities in a trailer for RuneScape 3 quest Dragon Slayer II, shown at RuneFest. The company said it had taken the trailer down while investigating and that its external production partner had explicitly assured it generative AI would not be used. Jagex’s reported statement did not give a final finding on how the trailer was made.
Why did Jagex take down the RuneScape trailer?
The trailer promoting the Dragon Slayer II quest was presented at RuneFest. Viewers flagged apparent visual anomalies, including a character with six fingers and armor footwear with a sneaker-like sole, as possible signs of generative-AI imagery. Jagex said it removed the video while it investigated the concerns. The observations were raised by viewers and in coverage of the trailer; they are not an independent forensic finding about the production process.

What did Jagex say about AI use?
Jagex social media manager Alec “Mod Sween” Sween said the company had commissioned a trusted external partner, which explicitly confirmed that generative AI would not be used. The partner is not named in the cited statement, and the assurance is Jagex’s account of what it was told—not a separate statement from the partner.
Sween acknowledged the visible concern in the statement reported by Kotaku: “But, among other things, there’s a sixth finger and, well, that’s pretty hard to explain away. For that we apologise.”

Jagex also reiterated that it does not use generative AI to create its games, artwork, or creative assets, and would not knowingly permit it to be used on its behalf. That policy statement and the partner’s reported assurance do not establish what the investigation ultimately found about this particular trailer.
What changes did Jagex announce?
Jagex said the incident exposed a weakness in its own processes. It announced an overhaul of review procedures and said it would work with and commission community creators to retell the quest’s story. In the company statement delivered by Sween, Jagex said: “Immediately following RuneFest we’re overhauling our review processes, and we’re going to work with and commission creators from the community to make sure that the story of Dragon Slayer II is told to the standard befitting of such an update.”
