Stranger Than Heaven is shaping up as a direct-action adventure built around independently controlled attacks and defenses, while Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth is an RPG. Their stories differ just as sharply: Makoto Daito’s announced journey spans five eras and cities from 1915 to 1965, whereas Infinite Wealth follows Ichiban Kasuga and Kazuma Kiryu in a single game’s story. The comparison depends on which Like a Dragon you mean: the series includes both RPGs and action-adventure games.
Which Like a Dragon game is the comparison?
Like a Dragon is a series, not one fixed combat format. SEGA’s catalog categorizes Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth as an RPG and Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii as an action-adventure. So the clearest contrast is between Stranger Than Heaven’s announced direct-action combat and Infinite Wealth’s RPG framing—not between the new game and every entry in the franchise. SEGA’s catalog lists the different titles and genres.

How does Stranger Than Heaven’s combat differ?
SEGA says Makoto can use his left and right sides independently to attack and defend. That design is intended to make the player manage offense and defense through separate actions: catch an enemy’s attack with one hand, for example, then counter with the other. Announced weapons include knives, hammers, and swords. SEGA’s announcement describes the system and its weapon upgrades.

Producer Hiroyuki Sakamoto framed the intended change as making combat “more intuitive and more rough,” in a GamesRadar interview. He contrasted it with some Yakuza-style fights where, in his view, repeated button presses could be enough. That is the producer’s design rationale—not an objective finding about every game in the series or a guarantee of how the final system will feel. GamesRadar’s interview and preview provide the comments.
By comparison, Infinite Wealth is presented by SEGA as an RPG rather than as the same kind of direct-action combat system announced for Stranger Than Heaven. That distinction is useful, but it should not be generalized to the entire series: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, for example, is categorized as an action-adventure.

How do the stories differ?
Stranger Than Heaven: Makoto’s five-decade journey
The story opens in San Francisco in 1915, where a young man sneaks aboard a suspicious ship. Makoto Daito, born to an American father and Japanese mother, has lost his parents and been isolated; he heads to Japan in search of a better life. SEGA describes the game as a struggle to find a place to call home. SEGA’s announcement gives the premise.

That is a 50-year story structure, not a claim that every detail of the plot or its historical treatment is known. Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth: one game, not the whole series
For a specific story comparison, Infinite Wealth is the RPG foil: it is one installment, not a synopsis of the broader franchise. The available comparison evidence establishes its RPG classification, but does not support treating every Like a Dragon game as sharing one protagonist, plot, or setting. SEGA’s catalog is the appropriate reference for the franchise’s separate titles and categories: SEGA’s Steam catalog.
The contrast supported by the announcements is therefore structural: Stranger Than Heaven is built around Makoto’s multi-era journey across decades, while comparisons to Like a Dragon should be made title by title. Do not infer a complete plot, ending, or historical accuracy from the new game’s promotional premise.

What else does Stranger Than Heaven ask Makoto to do?
The announced play is not limited to combat. Makoto’s musical talent develops into showman work: players collect sounds in the world and combine them into tracks, hear street rumors to scout performers, and arrange shows with casts, sets, lighting, and staging. These systems connect his developing career to the story, though the game has not yet released and the described features remain announced gameplay. Xbox Wire’s September feature describes the showman activities.
