The broader upgrade and campaign-progression systems have not yet been described in detail. The game is announced for January 15, 2027.
How does combat work?
The central combat idea is that Makoto’s left and right sides are controlled independently. SEGA and Xbox describe using those sides to attack, defend, and fight through encounters, giving the system more deliberate choices than a single undifferentiated attack input. Xbox’s official game page summarizes the design; its hands-on demo report gives a more specific example of the controls.

Xbox demo controls
In Xbox Wire’s June 11, 2026 hands-on demo, light and heavy attacks were mapped separately across the left and right shoulder buttons and triggers on an Xbox controller. That is a reported Xbox demo layout, not confirmation that every platform uses the same inputs. The reporter played demo encounters across Fukuoka, Hiroshima, and Osaka, with sections described as having escalating difficulty; this does not establish the structure or difficulty curve of the full campaign. Xbox Wire’s hands-on report documents those observations.
Blocking and finishing attacks
The Xbox showcase recap says combat includes powerful finishing moves and context-sensitive attacks. A GamesRadar+ Gamescom preview additionally describes one-arm blocking and a two-arm block, with demo fights that called for timed defense and attention to changes in enemy behavior. These are preview observations, not a guarantee of how every encounter will play in the released game. Xbox Wire’s showcase recap and GamesRadar+’s Gamescom preview provide those details.

What can Makoto explore and collect?
Exploration connects to Makoto’s musical talent. He can notice ordinary sounds around him and save them as recordings to use as ideas for future compositions. Examples shared by Game Director Mikinobu Abe include a broom sweeping, a passing train, and an enemy hitting a curb. Abe described Makoto as having a “keen ability to find the music in everyday life, [memorizing] the sounds as ideas for future compositions.” The feature is presented as sound-gathering tied to music, not as evidence of a general exploration-upgrade system. Xbox Wire’s May 6, 2026 recap attributes the explanation to Abe.
What do the showman activities involve?
SEGA describes STRANGER THAN HEAVEN as an action-adventure with showbusiness elements. Makoto’s musical talent leads him into producing acts around Japan, and Xbox’s showcase recap identifies Makoto and Yu as partners in showbusiness later in the story. That makes producing acts a substantial narrative and gameplay thread alongside fighting. The official descriptions do not yet lay out a detailed production interface or step-by-step activity loop. SEGA’s announcement and Xbox’s product page describe the premise and showman role.

What progression systems have not been explained?
The announced material establishes combat, sound recording, and showman activities, but does not describe a complete character-upgrade or campaign-progression system. In particular, the reviewed official pages and previews do not explain:
- Whether Makoto has a skill tree, or how character abilities are unlocked.
- Whether equipment improves or changes combat, and how any equipment system works.
- How show production is managed, what the production loop involves, or how activities unlock.
- What rewards or persistent upgrade economy connect combat, exploration, and showman activities.
- How the full campaign gates progress between eras and cities.
The demo’s difficulty-labelled sections and escalating encounters describe that demo, not a confirmed campaign-wide progression structure. Until the developers explain more, importing upgrade assumptions from other RGG games or from the genre would go beyond what has been shown. The demo scope is described in Xbox Wire’s hands-on report and GamesRadar+’s preview.
