The October 2, 2026 storage news roundup spans backup for AI-agent data, high-performance computing, ransomware research, object storage, and infrastructure releases. The developments address different enterprise needs; they are news to evaluate in context, not a single product recommendation.

Backup is expanding to local AI-agent data

Backblaze announced changes to Business Computer Backup intended to simplify deployment and management for Jamf administrators, including organizations that are not fully centralized. Blocks & Files described the changes as an extension of Backblaze’s existing Jamf integration.

In a separate October 2 report, Blocks & Files said Commvault was adding discovery, protection, and recovery for AI-agent configurations and related local data on supported Windows and macOS tools through AgentRecover. That scope is distinct from cloud-hosted chat histories: the focus is local agent configuration and context on managed computers.

At publication, the report said ChatGPT desktop discovery was available. Discovery, protection, and recovery for supported local data from Claude Cowork, Claude Code, and OpenClaw were expected to reach general availability in the coming months. That was a forward-looking schedule reported on October 2, not a guarantee of present availability.

Sandisk 2TB Extreme Portable SSD, Up to 1050MB/s, USB-C, USB 3.2 Gen 2, IP65 Water and Dust Resistance, Updated Firmware, External Solid State Drive, SDSSDE61-2T00-G25
  • Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
  • Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
  • Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
  • Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
  • Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C

The same report described other vendors’ offerings, but for different workloads: Cohesity Agent Resilience for Amazon Bedrock AgentCore and Bedrock Agents; Druva backup for local Claude Code and Cowork data; and Rubrik features for agent inventory, configuration tracking, and code-repository recovery. These are not interchangeable coverage claims. An evaluation should check the specific agents supported, operating systems, local versus cloud data scope, recovery behavior, policy controls, and availability.

GenomeDK uses one large system for active analysis and retention

Blocks & Files reported that GenomeDK, a Danish high-performance computing facility, uses a 33 PB BeeGFS deployment as a single mount point for active analysis and long-term retention. Some datasets are 15 years old, illustrating how a research facility may need to keep older data accessible alongside active compute workloads.

SSK Portable SSD 1TB External Solid State Hard Drive USB C Up to 1050MB/s
  • Capacity Display Variance: 1TB external ssd often appears as around 931GB on Windows. MacOS can show full 1 TB capacity. This is binary calculation difference and doesn’t affect SSD hard drive actual physical storage
  • 1050 MB/s Speed: Instantly access to your files with blazing-fast 10Gbps external SSD read up to 1050MB/s and write up to 1000MB/s. LED Light indicates USB SSD instant activity
  • Data Security: Solid state drives S.M.A.R.T. health diagnostics and adaptive TRIM optimizing data block management ensures consistent write speeds and extends the longevity of the portable SSD
  • USB-C & USB-A Cable: Both cables featuring rapid USB 3.2 Gen2, this USB SSD effortlessly bridges devices, enabling seamless cross-platform file transfers and backup between computers, smartphones, tablets and iPhone
  • Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity

The facility reportedly expands storage about every two to three years, migrating data onto new capacity and retiring older hardware incrementally in the background. This is one public-sector operating example, not a performance benchmark or a universal storage design. Other facilities would need to weigh workload performance, retention obligations, migration effort, staffing, and budget.

Ransomware findings describe a lab sample, not incident rates

Index Engines’ CyberSense Research Lab reported that it acquired and detonated 1,064 ransomware strains in the first half of 2026. Within that tested sample, 47.8% exhibited directory-entry destruction, while 18.3% exhibited full encryption. These percentages describe the Lab’s sample; they are not estimates of how often those behaviors occur across real-world attacks.

SSK Portable SSD 500GB External Solid State Hard Drive USB C Up to 1050MB/s
  • Capacity Display Variance: 500GB external ssd often appears as around 465GB on Windows. MacOS can show full 500 GB capacity.

The October 2 ticker also said the Lab documented strains that preserve familiar surface signals—such as file extensions and timestamps—while changing file contents or targeting selected file regions. As reported by Chris Mellor, Index Engines CMO Jim McGann said: “Bad actors know what scanning tools look for, and the variants we detonated this year are built to hide it.” The statement and findings should be read as attributed vendor-lab reporting, not as an independently established prevalence measure.

Internxt reports a new S3-compatible hot object-storage offer

Blocks & Files reported that Spanish provider Internxt introduced hot object storage compatible with AWS S3, priced at €7 per TB per month. The report said the offer had no ingress, egress, or API fees, supported AWS S3 and IAM APIs, encrypted data in transit and at rest, allowed customer-provided server-side encryption keys, and offered US or European storage regions.

Internxt’s reported claim of “up to 80%” savings compares its offer with hyperscalers such as AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud; it is the company’s comparison, not a claim about savings against every S3-compatible provider. Before estimating costs, compare the service’s availability and region choices with the workload’s jurisdiction needs, key-management requirements, expected capacity, and data movement.

Other data and infrastructure announcements

  • AI data: Corbenic AI announced Galahad, a memory layer for AI applications.
  • Time-series data: InfluxData released InfluxDB 3.12. The ticker described distributed compaction as beta and reported vendor-tested bulk Parquet import times reduced by 64–70% across tested workloads. That range is a vendor-reported result, not a general performance guarantee.
  • Cloud infrastructure: Lightbits received a certification involving Red Hat OpenStack Services on OpenShift.
  • Developer ecosystem: The MariaDB Foundation introduced an ecosystem directory.
  • OpenStack: The 2026.2 “Hibiscus” release includes changes across compute, networking, storage, accelerator management, and security. The ticker noted Manila support for Weka and Lustre parallel file systems.
  • Industry and test infrastructure: The roundup also covered executive appointments at Micron and Quantum, a SerialTek PCIe 7.0 protocol test system scheduled for Q1 2027, and a Snowflake–LSEG collaboration.

These brief announcements concern separate products and initiatives; the roundup does not establish a direct comparison among them.
