To stop Windows 11 from using typing and handwriting information to improve its services, open Settings > Privacy & security > Diagnostics & feedback and turn Improve inking and typing off. The custom word list is a separate setting; turn it off too if you want Windows to clear that list.
Turn off the typing and inking improvement setting
- Open Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Diagnostics & feedback.
- Switch Improve inking and typing to Off.
Microsoft identifies this toggle as the control for stopping Windows from using typing and handwriting information to improve typing and writing services. With the option on, Microsoft says it collects samples of typed or written content to improve handwriting recognition, autocompletion, next-word prediction, and spelling correction. Microsoft’s Windows diagnostics and privacy guidance describes how to change the setting.

Microsoft says the diagnostic samples are divided into small samples and processed to remove unique identifiers, sequencing information, and other details—such as email addresses and numeric values—that could help reconstruct input or associate it with a person. Associated performance data, including manual text changes and words added to the dictionary, is also included. Microsoft says this data is not used for Tailored experiences; this is Microsoft’s description of its handling, not an independently verified guarantee.

Turning off Improve inking and typing is different from disabling Windows’ custom inking and typing word list. Windows builds that list from words you type or write to improve accuracy. Microsoft says it is associated with your Microsoft account and can be used across Microsoft products.

- Switch Custom inking and typing word list to Off.
Microsoft says switching off this option clears the custom word list. See Microsoft’s explanation of inking, typing, and privacy.
Check account sync separately
Windows Backup can sync selected preferences, including language preferences and dictionary. If your concern includes information or settings synced with your Microsoft account, review Windows Backup > Remember my preferences and its dictionary-related settings. Microsoft notes that Windows asks permission to sync account data in certain countries or regions, without specifying the regions on its support page.

Turning off a local setting should not be treated as proof that every previously synced copy or separately retained account record has been deleted. Microsoft’s account privacy and data choices page explains the available account controls. Microsoft also distinguishes deleting diagnostic data from stopping future collection: deleting data alone does not stop future sending.

On some workplace-managed devices, diagnostic controls may be unavailable or marked as managed by your organization. In that case, ask your IT administrator which policy applies. Microsoft’s support directions do not provide a Windows 11 build-by-build label map, so wording or availability may differ between installations.
