Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf File Explorer crashes when you right-click in Windows 11, first restart the PC and check for updates. Then find out whether the crash affects every item or only a particular file, folder, or location. That distinction helps narrow the diagnosis: a context-menu add-on is one possibility, but the symptom alone does not prove it. Use the steps below from least disruptive to more involved, and reserve update removal for problems that began after a specific update.
Start with the simplest checks
Note what triggers the crash before changing settings. Test a few different files and folders, and check whether the problem occurs only in a particular location, such as a network drive, or only after selecting “Show more options.” These comparisons help define the problem; they do not identify its cause.

- Restart Windows.
- Open Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates, install available updates, and restart if Windows asks you to. Microsoft includes restarting and checking for updates among its basic steps when File Explorer is not working properly: Microsoft’s File Explorer troubleshooting guide.
If the desktop or taskbar remains usable but Explorer needs to be brought back, press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager, select Run new task, enter explorer.exe, and press Enter. Microsoft documented this as a temporary workaround for a particular September 2026 desktop-loading issue—not as a general fix for every right-click crash. See the environment-specific update notes below.

Check the crash record in Event Viewer
Reproduce the crash, note the time, then open Event Viewer > Windows Logs > Application. Look for an Explorer application error around that time. Record the faulting application, faulting module, event details, and time; Event IDs 1000 and 1001 may be relevant to crashes involving Explorer or other shell components. Microsoft’s Windows Event Log documentation describes the log system, but an event or module name by itself does not prove what caused the crash. The record can still help when asking device support or a technician for help.

Compare behavior in Safe Mode or a clean boot
Explorer can involve software that adds features to its context menu, such as a cloud-sync client, archive utility, or security program. Such an add-on is a plausible suspect when the failure occurs as a menu opens, but it is only a hypothesis until testing narrows it down.
Use Safe Mode or a clean boot as a comparison. Safe Mode starts Windows with a limited set of services and drivers; if right-clicking works there, that points toward something not running in that limited state, but does not identify the specific component. Microsoft explains the diagnostic role of Safe Mode in its Safe Mode guidance.

- LOW POWER CONSUMPTION: Intelligent sleep mode can better extend battery life. It will enter auto sleep mode if you don't use it for 5 minutes to save battery and need to click it, the mouse will enter working mode again
- STABLE CONNECTION: 2.4 GHz wireless provides stronger anti-interference ability, a faster transmission speed and a more reliable connection, working distances can up to 10 m, and high DPI can make it track more smoothly over most surfaces
- WIDE COMPATIBILITY: Well compatible with Windows7/8/10/XP, Vista, Mac OS X 10.4 etc. Fits for desktop, laptop, PC and other devices
- ERGONOMIC & COMPACT DESIGN: USB-receiver stays in your PC USB port or stows conveniently inside the wireless mouse when not in use. The lightweight and simple features make the mouse perfect for the journey, office, home
- WHISPER & SENSITIVE CLICKING: Smooth frosted surface and quiet clicks can bring a better user experience and free your worry about bothering others and keep you stay focused while working
If you use a clean boot and the crash stops, re-enable non-Microsoft startup items in groups, restarting and testing after each group. This can help isolate a conflict. Avoid deleting registry entries or disabling components you do not recognize.
Repair Windows system files if other signs point to corruption
If the crash persists, or other Windows features are also malfunctioning, run Microsoft’s repair commands from an elevated Command Prompt. Search for Command Prompt, choose Run as administrator, and run DISM before SFC:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
sfc /scannow
Wait for each command to finish and read its result. DISM can repair the Windows image; System File Checker scans protected system files and replaces corrupted copies from its cache. Microsoft’s instructions are at Use the System File Checker tool. These commands target Windows-file problems; they do not remove a faulty third-party context-menu handler.
Consider update recovery only if the timing fits
If the crash began directly after a Windows update, note the update and your Windows version, then check the applicable Microsoft release-health information. Update removal may be worth considering when the timing fits, but it is a recovery step, not a first response to an unexplained crash. Start with the least disruptive recovery option, and back up important files before actions that could affect data. Microsoft describes its recovery options in Recovery options in Windows.

Match the reported issue to your PC
- A September 22, 2026 preview update note describes desktop-loading problems seen primarily on Azure Virtual Desktop hosts using FSLogix, including Explorer crashes in that environment. It documents launching
explorer.exeas a temporary mitigation and Known Issue Rollback for managed enterprise systems. This does not establish a cause for a typical consumer PC’s right-click crash: Microsoft’s September 22, 2026 Windows release-health note. - A September 8, 2026 note for Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2 mentions desktop-loading problems after specified updates and says application logs may show Explorer crashes. Check that your version, update history, and broader symptoms match before connecting it to your issue: Microsoft’s September 8, 2026 release-health note.
- A separate Microsoft note describes File Explorer becoming unresponsive in a File History issue. It does not establish that File History causes right-click crashes: Microsoft’s File History issue note.
When the cause is still unclear
If Safe Mode or a clean boot does not narrow it down and system-file repair does not help, keep the Event Viewer details and send feedback through Feedback Hub or contact your device manufacturer’s support. Microsoft recommends Feedback Hub when its basic File Explorer troubleshooting steps do not restore reliability. The cause on an individual PC cannot be determined from the right-click symptom alone.
