A brand-new iPhone can use extra power while it finishes setup or an iOS update in the background, but that is only one possible cause of fast drain. Start at Settings > Battery: Apple’s Battery insights and activity charts can help distinguish temporary setup work from an app, weak cellular coverage, display use, or a battery-health issue. Apple does not give a fixed time for setup activity to end, so judge the phone by what its Battery screen shows and whether the problem persists.
Check whether the iPhone is still setting up
Open Settings > Battery and look for the insights and activity shown on your iPhone. If you see Ongoing Device Setup, Apple explains: “Your device is completing setup steps in the background.” If you see Ongoing iOS Update, Apple says a recent software update is finishing in the background. These activities can affect battery life for a while, but Apple does not promise a particular completion time. If fast drain began after an iOS update, Apple advises waiting a few days and checking again. That is not a guarantee that every phone will return to normal within that period; compare the Battery screen again rather than relying on a fixed deadline. Apple Support
Find what is using power now
In Settings > Battery, review the daily activity chart and the app and system activity below it. Look at whether an item’s use was on screen or in the background. A high-use app is a clue to investigate, not proof of a fault: navigation, video, syncing, location access, or other expected activity can account for power use. - One app stands out: Check whether it was active on screen or in the background, then review the app’s relevant use, such as location, media playback, or syncing.
- Low cellular coverage appears: Try Wi-Fi in a reliable location or use the iPhone where cellular reception is stronger. On supported 5G models, Apple describes 5G Auto as switching to LTE when 5G is not providing a noticeably better experience.
- Notifications or screen use dominate: Review which apps are waking the phone and whether high brightness or prolonged screen-on use explains the drain. Apply targeted adjustments, such as Auto-Brightness or Auto-Lock when suggested, instead of changing many settings at once.

Account for temperature and battery-health context
Cold can temporarily reduce battery life while the iPhone is outside its normal operating range; Apple says performance returns to normal when the battery returns to that range. Heat is a different concern: Apple identifies 16° to 22°C (62° to 72°F) as the ideal ambient temperature range and warns that using or charging an iPhone above 35°C (95°F) can permanently reduce battery lifespan. Check Settings > Battery > Battery Health or the equivalent Battery Health menu on your model. Maximum capacity may already be slightly below 100% because of the time between manufacture and activation; a percentage alone does not establish a defect. Apple’s cycle figures are design targets under ideal conditions, not guarantees for an individual phone: it says iPhone 14 models and earlier are designed to retain 80% capacity at 500 complete charge cycles, while iPhone 15 models are designed to retain 80% at 1,000 complete charge cycles. Know when to seek service
If setup or update insights are absent, no app or signal pattern explains the drain, or severe drain continues, inspect Battery Health and follow the guidance shown there. Apple says to consider service if Battery Health displays Service. For a new iPhone with persistent severe drain, contact Apple or an authorized service provider for assessment under the warranty or consumer protections that apply where you bought it. Apple’s published guidance does not define a numeric threshold for “terrible” battery drain, provide an average drain rate for brand-new iPhones, or establish how common setup-related drain is. Use your model’s Battery activity, the timing of the symptoms, and Battery Health to make the decision.
