Stop Windows 11 Date and Time Formats from Changing Back

Windows 11 keeps changing your date or time display? Separate Regional format from clock, time-zone, and app settings, then troubleshoot the right control.

If Windows 11 keeps changing how dates or times are displayed, first identify what is actually changing: the Regional format, the clock or time zone, or the display inside one app. These are separate settings, so automatic clock synchronization or location services are not established fixes for a Regional format that reverts.

Identify what is resetting

Compare what you see and where you see it before changing settings. A different date order or 12/24-hour display points to a format preference; an incorrect clock reading or a changed time zone is a separate issue. If the change appears in only one application, that app may have its own format control.

  • Display pattern changed: Check Regional format in Windows.
  • Clock or time zone changed: Check Date & time.
  • Only one app changed: Check that app’s settings as well as its Windows integration.

Microsoft places these controls under Time & language, but documents date/time and time-zone configuration separately from language and regional settings. See Microsoft’s Windows date, time, and time-zone settings guide and language and input settings guide.

Check the Windows Regional format

  1. Open Settings > Time & language > Language & region.
  2. Find Regional format and check whether the selected format matches the date and time pattern you want.
  3. If it changes again, note when it happens—for example, after sign-in, a restart, or a language change—and whether the change appears across Windows or only in one app.

Windows language settings also include installed languages, the Windows display language, and the order of preferred languages. Microsoft says changing the display language moves it to the top of Preferred languages; the first supported language in that list determines the language used by Microsoft Store apps and websites. If the problem began after changing language settings, review those choices, but their relationship does not establish that they are the cause of a recurring Regional format reset. Microsoft’s language settings documentation describes these options. The Windows Settings overview groups date/time, language, and region under Time & language.

Check Date & time only if the clock or time zone changed

  1. Open Settings > Time & language > Date & time.
  2. Review the automatic or manual date and time options, the time-zone selection, and daylight-saving behavior as relevant to the symptom.
  3. If automatic time-zone selection is involved, review the Windows location setting. Location supports features including automatic time-zone setting, but the cited guidance does not say that location controls reset the Regional format.

These controls address the clock and time zone, not a proven cause of a date-display pattern reverting. Microsoft’s guide to time, date, and time-zone settings covers the controls; its location service and privacy guide explains the connection to automatic time-zone features. A September 26, 2023 Windows configuration update discussed a time-zone warning when location was disabled; that historical update is not evidence that location causes a current format reset. See Microsoft’s update notice.

If the format changes in only one app

Check the application’s own regional or date/time preferences before changing unrelated Windows settings. Microsoft Teams illustrates why: it can follow Windows regional settings or use separate in-app format options, and Microsoft says Teams may need to restart after a regional-format change. That guidance is specific to Teams, not a rule for every application. See Microsoft’s Teams settings guide.

If the Windows format keeps reverting

Microsoft’s support pages explain where to configure Regional format, language, clock, and time-zone settings, but they do not establish one universal cause or a verified registry fix for a recurring Regional format reset. Avoid treating clock synchronization, location, or a registry edit as a general solution without evidence that it addresses the specific change.

  • Write down the selected Regional format and the format it changes to.
  • Record whether the change follows sign-in, restart, an app restart, or a language/region change.
  • Check whether it affects Windows broadly or just one app.
  • If the device is managed, include that fact when asking the device administrator or support team to investigate.

Do not change the Store region to fix date formatting

The Microsoft Store country or region setting is intended for a move to another country or region for a long time, not as a quick date-format repair. Microsoft warns that changing it can affect regional content and Microsoft account balances. See Microsoft’s Store country or region guidance.
