On a compatible Samsung Galaxy, open the Phone app, tap More options > Settings, and turn on Caller ID and spam protection. Then choose whether to block all calls identified as spam or scams, or only high-risk scam calls. Menu names and availability vary by model, software version, and carrier.
Turn on Samsung’s spam and scam protection
- Open the Phone app and tap More options (the three-dot menu).
- Tap Settings, then enable Caller ID and spam protection. Review the terms and privacy policy and accept them if you want to use the feature.
- Open the additional spam-protection settings and turn on Block spam and scam calls, if that option appears.
- Choose the blocking level that fits your needs.

Block a repeat caller or unknown numbers
Add a specific number
For a recurring unwanted caller, go to Phone > More options > Settings > Block numbers. Enter the number, or choose it from Recents, Messages, or Contacts if those choices appear. If a recent call is open, Samsung also describes options to tap Block number or Report number. Reporting a suspected fraudulent caller may include choosing a category and adding a comment. In Block numbers, look for a control such as Block calls from unknown numbers. This is broader than blocking a repeat caller: it can prevent legitimate calls from people whose numbers are not saved. Call screening
Samsung’s U.S. support information limits Call screening to Galaxy phones running Android 16 with One UI 8.5 or higher. On a compatible phone, check Phone > More options > Settings > Call screening for an option to automatically screen unknown callers. AI Scam detection
Samsung also lists AI Scam detection for Galaxy phones running Android 16 with One UI 8.5 or higher. Its U.S. guidance describes an alert when a potential scam is detected, leaving you to decide whether to answer or block. If the setting is missing or spam still gets through
- Check software updates. Samsung lists updating the phone as a troubleshooting step. Smart Call may not be available on every carrier or model, so an update will not necessarily add it. Samsung Canada: How to use Smart Call
- Ask your wireless provider about call filtering. Providers may offer call blocking or labeling. Some services stop calls; others label them, silence them, or send them to voicemail. Availability and any cost depend on the provider and service. Federal Trade Commission: How to block unwanted calls
- Consider clearing Phone app data only as a later troubleshooting step. Samsung lists it as an option, but clearing data can reset app settings. Check what will be erased or reset on your device before proceeding. Samsung Canada: How to use Smart Call
No call filter is perfect: it can miss unwanted calls or misidentify legitimate ones, and spoofed caller ID can make a call appear to come from a different number. If a call seems suspicious, do not rely on the displayed number alone.
Report unwanted calls in the United States
If you suspect an illegal robocall, the FTC advises hanging up and not pressing prompts. You can report unwanted calls at DoNotCall.gov. Include your phone number, the caller ID number even if you think it was spoofed, any callback number, and the date and time when known. Which approach should you use?
- For broad, automatic filtering: Turn on Caller ID and spam protection and choose the blocking level you can tolerate.
- For one persistent number: Add it to Block numbers.
- For calls from all unsaved numbers: Consider unknown-caller blocking only if you are comfortable potentially missing legitimate callers.
- If built-in controls are unavailable or insufficient: Ask your carrier what its labeling and blocking services do before enabling one.
- For a suspected scam: Hang up, avoid prompts, and report it through the appropriate U.S. agency if applicable.
