The AAP’s preschool guidance says, “AVOID letting your child have open-access to a tablet or phone.” Its 5 C’s framework asks caregivers to consider the child, the content, how media is used for calming, what it may crowd out, and communication about media. That points to a practical choice: favor a setup where an adult chooses what is available and stays involved, rather than treating a kid-oriented device as permission for unrestricted browsing.

Which parental controls should you look for?
Amazon Fire tablets
Amazon says Parent Dashboard can support profiles for up to four children, settings, screen-time limits, educational goals, usage history, and discovery of age-appropriate books, apps, games, videos, and Alexa skills. Its support material also describes controls that can restrict features and require a password for actions such as downloading apps or web browsing. Do you need a protective case?

What not to infer from a kids tablet
- “For kids” does not mean ready for independent use. A manufacturer’s age notice and parental-control features do not establish that open access is appropriate for a particular preschooler.
- Controls are not a complete substitute for adult oversight. Check how restrictions apply to the actual apps and features in use.
