What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Use several controls together: signup velocity, disposable-email checks, device or payment reuse, suspicious early usage, and server-side limits on what each account can consume. No single signal proves that accounts belong to the same person. Start by observing patterns, then add friction in proportion to risk and measure whether the controls reduce abuse without blocking legitimate users.
First decide what counts as repeat abuse
Separate repeated claims of a one-time trial or free credit from ordinary multiple users in a household, school, or company. Identify which entitlements are meant to be one-time and what value you need to protect. On a permanently free plan, first check whether extra accounts actually unlock meaningful additional value; on a trial or credit offer, focus on closing reset paths.

A new email address is not a new person. Temporary addresses, altered identity details, and automated signup flows can all produce fresh accounts, while basic email verification only shows that someone can receive mail at an address. It does not establish unique identity.

Build a risk picture from several signals
Look for combinations and patterns, not a single supposedly definitive identifier. Shared devices, networks, payment methods, and phone numbers can be legitimate; abusive traffic can also rotate through proxies or change account details. Treat signals as inputs to a risk score or review process, not as automatic proof.

| Signal or control | What it may reveal | Limitation to account for |
|---|---|---|
| Email verification and disposable-domain checks | Unverified accounts or addresses associated with temporary email services. | Temporary inboxes may receive verification messages, and custom domains can create many addresses. Verification alone does not establish a unique person. Stripe and AWS discuss these kinds of controls. |
| Signup velocity by IP, subnet, or network provider | Bursts of registrations from shared network infrastructure. | Many legitimate users share an IP, while abusive signups may rotate through VPNs or proxies. Use this as one risk input. Stripe and AWS cover network and client-identification signals. |
| Device or browser fingerprinting | Repeated activity from a device despite changed account details. | A fingerprint is a signal, not a guaranteed personal identity; consider false positives and data practices. AWS describes device fingerprinting and device-aware rate limiting in its client-identification guidance. |
| Payment method or phone reuse | Payment instruments or phone numbers used across multiple accounts. | These checks add friction and can exclude legitimate users; some numbers and payment methods are shared. See Stripe’s guidance. |
| Early-session and API behavior | Accounts that immediately target expensive features or repeat scripted actions. | Legitimate users may also use APIs or resource-intensive features. Investigate patterns and apply limits rather than assuming intent. Stripe discusses usage and API-layer controls. |
| CAPTCHA or bot detection | Some automated browser activity and common bots. | More sophisticated automation may bypass simple challenges, and challenges burden legitimate visitors. AWS describes CAPTCHA as an additional defense layer in its bot-control guidance. |
| Usage caps and API rate limits | Limits how much value can be extracted from any one account. | Caps may constrain legitimate heavy users; tune them by feature, account age, or risk where appropriate. See Stripe’s recommendations. |
| Payment method required for a trial | Raises the cost of creating repeat trials and provides payment-risk signals. | It can reduce signup volume and change the offer’s friction. Use it only when the risk and conversion economics justify it. See Stripe’s guidance. |
Protect the value after signup
Signup checks cannot prevent every account from being created. Put the most important protections at the point where an account receives or consumes an entitlement:
- Enforce rate limits on API credentials and usage caps on costly features on the server side.
- Protect trial, credit, and other reset logic so creating a new account does not simply restore a depleted entitlement.
- Apply lighter limits to low-cost exploration and tighter caps or checks to compute, tokens, storage, or automation that has meaningful cost.
- Do not rely only on the signup interface. Direct API use may continue after credentials have been issued.
Stripe’s free-trial-abuse guidance specifically discusses resource-intensive AI use and controls at the API layer. AWS notes that recognizing repeated requests from the same device can let a backend impose rate limits, even when request characteristics change, in its device-fingerprinting guidance.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5C NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5C NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5C NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
Roll out controls in stages
- Instrument signup and early use. Record signup timestamps and relevant risk indicators. Observe patterns before rejecting accounts automatically.
- Establish a baseline. Measure abuse, signup and paid conversion, false positives, support burden, and infrastructure cost.
- Add a low-risk response first. Let low-risk users proceed; for uncertain cases, consider limits or delayed access to valuable entitlements.
- Step up for higher risk. Request stronger verification or manual review when several signals align. Block only when the evidence and your policy justify it, and provide a way for legitimate users to resolve a mistaken decision.
- Evaluate changes separately where practical. Compare outcomes before and after each control, changing one at a time where feasible so its effect is easier to assess.
Stripe’s vendor-authored guidance, last updated May 5, 2026, gives two to four weeks of data collection as one example before enforcement and recommends phased deployment rather than activating every abuse control at once. That is an example, not a universal waiting period; the right observation window depends on your traffic and risk.

For a permanently free plan
Confirm that multiple accounts create a real cost or unlock an unfair advantage before asking every user for more identity information. If the concern is expensive usage, protect those features directly rather than making the entire signup flow harder.
For a small service or a growing operation
A small service can begin with server-side deduplication, velocity rules, and usage caps. If maintaining multi-signal scoring, device intelligence, or operational review becomes difficult, evaluate software against the actual signup flow. Compare signal coverage, latency, false-positive handling, reporting, and integration effort; no tool should be assumed to solve repeat signups by itself.

Measure whether the controls are working
Review abuse rate alongside signup conversion, activation, paid conversion, false positives, support volume, and infrastructure cost. A control that reduces suspicious activity but blocks viable customers needs adjustment. Stripe’s implementation guidance recommends staged rollout and comparing conversion with infrastructure costs.
Device identification, CAPTCHA, payment checks, and phone verification all involve trade-offs. The sources describe technical options, not a universal rule that every service should use them. Assess your data practices and applicable privacy, consent, and identity-verification requirements before collecting or using these signals.
