A cron job can stop running, hang, or exit with an error without anyone noticing. A heartbeat monitor makes the job check in with an external service on a schedule. The most useful signals describe three different stages: start, success or completion, and failure. A ping sent only after useful work succeeds is stronger evidence than one sent when the process merely starts.
What a cron heartbeat can—and cannot—tell you
Heartbeat monitoring is a passive check: the scheduled process sends a request to a monitoring service, which alerts you when an expected check-in does not arrive. Healthchecks.io describes this pattern as a “dead man’s switch” (Healthchecks.io documentation). It can reveal problems such as a machine outage, a stopped or misconfigured cron daemon, a task exiting unsuccessfully, or a run taking abnormally long.

A heartbeat proves only the event represented by the signal. If the script pings at startup, the monitor knows it began—not that it finished or produced the intended result. If it pings only after successful work, the monitor has evidence that execution reached that success boundary. Even then, a ping is not proof that every downstream outcome is correct; it is a signal your code defines.

- [ Non-invasive fetoscope ] - Skywin Fetoscope for Baby Heartbeat Detection is a non-invasive way to listen to a baby's heartbeat. Detection is barely as early as 24-30 weeks, but the best chance should be around 30 - 36 weeks to hear the faint tones. Normally undetectable from 0 - 24 weeks. It takes time and practice to locate your baby's heartbeat and correctly position yourself and the fetoscope to hear the heartbeat. Please be patient as you may have better luck finding it in later weeks, it might be helpful to refer to the 'How to Use' instructions on the box
- [ Instruction How to Use (1st Step) ] -To use the Pinard horn for fetal heart monitoring, find a quiet, comfy spot. Insert earpieces tightly, and minimize airflow. Listen to different belly areas, especially below the belly button during the 2nd trimester. Place the horn where the baby's heart is, and add slight pressure for a clear sound. Count heartbeats (120-160 bpm).
- [ Instruction How to Use (2nd Step) ] - If no heartbeat is heard, DO NOT GIVE UP! Babies tend to move, so try again later. Remember, Detecting very young fetuses is harder; fetoscopes typically aren't strong enough to hear anything until 30-36 weeks gestation, about halfway through the second trimester. (Please check DESCRIPTION below for a detailed instruction)
- [ A Special Notes ] - Remember, a fetoscope is designed to listen to fetal heart tones, so if you're testing it on your heartbeat or another adult's heartbeat it's not going to sound very loud and clear either. It is designed to auscultate fetal heart tones.
- [ Portability Is The Key ] - The compact and portable design of the Skywin Fetoscope for Baby Heartbeat Detection makes it convenient for parents to carry and use wherever they are, allowing them to share precious moments with loved ones who need to worry about replacing batteries or recharging it
Choose the signal that matches the job stage
1. Start: the job began
A start event is useful for long-running tasks because it shows that the scheduler launched the process. It does not establish that useful work finished. If a job reports a start and then hangs or crashes, the monitor needs another signal or a timeout rule to identify the incomplete run.
2. Success or completion: useful work reached its boundary
For a short task, this is often the most important heartbeat. Put the success ping after the work and make it conditional on success. Healthchecks.io’s cron guide illustrates this with a shell command chained using &&: the ping runs only if the preceding command succeeds. Its example uses curl -fsS -m 10 --retry 5; this is the vendor’s shell example, not a tested Python implementation or a universal command (Healthchecks.io cron guide).

Conceptually, the sequence is: run the Python task, determine whether it succeeded, and send the completion heartbeat only on success. Do not put a success ping in unconditional cleanup code, where it could run after an exception or nonzero exit.
3. Failure: the job reached a known error path
A failure event can make a known error visible promptly rather than waiting for a missed scheduled check-in. Send it from an error-handling path when the program has established that the run failed. It complements, rather than replaces, a success signal: a process that is killed or a machine that goes offline may be unable to send a failure event at all.

Not every setup needs three event types. A simple scheduled task may send only a post-success ping; start and failure events are optional where supported. For a longer or more consequential task, start plus success/failure signals give the monitor more information about the lifecycle.
Implement a heartbeat in a Python cron job
- Identify the real success boundary. Decide which completed operation means the job did what it was meant to do—for example, after a report has been generated and saved, rather than immediately after the process launches.
- Run the work before sending success. Allow exceptions or a failing exit status to prevent the completion ping. With an HTTP client, send a request to the unique ping endpoint only after the successful path; a vendor SDK can send the corresponding event instead.
- Add lifecycle events if runtime visibility matters. Send a start event when execution begins, then send success or failure when the run ends. Configure the monitor to treat a start without a timely ending event as an incomplete run.
- Keep credentials private. Store unique ping URLs and API keys in protected configuration or a secret store, not in a public source repository. Avoid printing them in logs.
- Test the paths deliberately. Confirm the monitor records a successful run, that a simulated error does not produce a success signal, and that a missing or delayed check-in generates the expected alert.
Cronitor documents telemetry events and a Python client, while Healthchecks.io documents HTTP pings and a curl-based approach. The integration choice depends on whether you want a direct HTTP request or a vendor SDK (Cronitor documentation).

Set schedule, timezone, and tolerance to fit reality
A monitor needs to know when a check-in is expected and how late it may arrive before alerting. Match its schedule to the actual cron expression, the scheduler’s timezone, and the job’s normal timing variation. A mismatch can cause false alerts—or leave a missed run unnoticed.

Healthchecks.io documents schedule configuration using a cron expression, server timezone, and grace time. Grace time accommodates ordinary variance and can also set the allowed gap between start and success signals (Healthchecks.io schedule configuration). Cronitor documents timezone settings and schedule tolerance as well as failure tolerance (Cronitor cron-job monitoring).

- Too little grace: normal startup delays or variable runtimes can trigger alerts even when the job eventually succeeds.
- Too much grace: a missed run or a hung process may remain undetected longer than you intend.
- For start-to-finish monitoring: set an allowed runtime that reflects the job’s realistic duration, not just the gap between scheduled starts.

Choose based on the event detail you need, schedule and tolerance controls, the integration method that suits your code, and the alert routes your team can act on. Current prices and plan limits are not established by the cited documentation, so verify those directly before choosing a service.
Make sure alerts reach someone
Detecting a missed heartbeat and delivering a useful notification are separate operational problems. A monitor can detect a failure while its notification goes to an unattended inbox or an unavailable channel. For important jobs, configure more than one notification method and decide who owns the alert and what response is expected. Healthchecks.io recommends multiple methods for important checks because a single channel may fail to reach someone (Healthchecks.io documentation).
