Stop Profile Updates From Changing Fields the Form Never Shows

A three-field profile form is no security boundary. The server must define and enforce which properties each update endpoint can change.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A profile form with name, email, and phone does not limit what a caller can send to its update endpoint. The server must enforce that limit: accept only the properties the endpoint is meant to change, and separately authorize any sensitive property. If it binds an entire request body to an internal account record, an extra field such as role or emailVerified may be accepted even though the form never displays it.

The form is not the security boundary

Browser controls shape the normal user experience, but callers can construct HTTP requests directly. Hiding a field, omitting it from a page, or marking it read-only does not stop a client from adding it to a request.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The update endpoint therefore needs its own contract: which properties may this caller change through this action? That contract must be enforced on the server, regardless of how the request was created.

How an ordinary profile update becomes mass assignment

Suppose a profile record contains a name, email, phone number, role, credit limit, company identifier, and email-verification status. The profile form is intended to update only the first three. If the endpoint automatically binds every submitted property to the record, a caller may be able to submit a role or credit-limit value as part of an otherwise legitimate update.

Magicmoon 2-Pack 24 Inch Computer Privacy Screen Filter for 16:9 Monitor
  • Compatible Model(s): Magicmoon brand filter only for 24 inch -diagonally measured - widescreen monitor - aspect ratio 16:9 - filter size: width: 20 15/16", Height: 11 13/16" (531mm x 298mm)
  • Superior Privacy: The computer privacy filter makes the screen appear dark when looking at it from an angle (the angle is about 30 to 60 degree), but bright when looking directly at it. To change the privacy level - simply adjust your monitor’s brightness accordingly
  • Eye and Screen Protection: Privacy Filter does not only protect your private life but also protects your eyes by blocking 30% of blue light , blocking the harmful blue light between 380 to 495 nm, it filters out the blue light and relieves eye strain
  • Perfect For Open Workspaces: Great for maintaining screen privacy in open work spaces
  • Includes Two Options: Option 1 uses clear adhesive strips that securely attach to any computer screen. Option 2 (for computer screens with a raised bezel only) uses slide mount tabs that easily stick to the display frame, allowing you to slide the privacy screen filter on and off as needed

OWASP describes this pattern as mass assignment: frameworks or application code automatically map client-supplied parameters to program variables or object properties. The defect is not simply that a UI control is missing. The endpoint has allowed input outside its intended contract to influence protected object properties.

Define what each endpoint is allowed to change

Use an action-specific input object

Give a profile-edit action an input type containing only the fields it is meant to accept, such as name, email, and phone. Avoid passing a complete persistence model or account object directly into automatic request binding. Separate input shapes for separate actions make the permitted changes explicit and reduce the chance that a newly added database field becomes writable by accident.

Allow-list properties and map them deliberately

Validate the request against the endpoint’s permitted properties, then copy those values deliberately to the persisted record. OWASP recommends allow-lists rather than relying solely on block-lists: a block-list can omit a sensitive property that was overlooked or added later. Rejecting unknown fields can also make contract violations visible, but it does not replace authorization checks for fields that are accepted.

Authorize sensitive properties separately

A property being present in an input type does not mean every caller may change it. Role, credit limit, company identifier, and verification status can have security or business consequences. Keep them out of ordinary self-service profile updates; if a separate action legitimately changes one, authorize the caller for that specific property and action.

Computer Privacy Screen Filter for 24 Inch 16:9 Aspect Ratio Monitor
  • Privacy Screen Filter Size: If the visible area of your display has the following dimension: Width x Height (Exclude Frame/Arrow 1 to 3 mm errors): 20 15/16" x 11 13/16" (532 mm x 299 mm), then this filter is good for you. Very Important to double check your screen's Width and Height excluding frame before ordering. It's not recommended to make your selection based solely on your screen's diagonal size
  • Left and Right Privacy: Not block visibility directly behind you, regardless of distance. The privacy filter makes the screen appear dark when looking at it from an angle (left and right 30 to 180 degree), but clear when looking directly at it. To change the privacy levels, simply adjust your monitor's brightness level accordingly
  • Matte and Glossy Sides: It's a reversible privacy screen filter, giving you the flexibility to choose glossy or matte finish. The matte side will have less glare, however the glossy side will have stronger privacy
  • Perfect for Open Workspaces: Ensure your working space is bright and well lit. Privacy screens do not work in dimly lit areas
  • Two Installation Option: Option 1 uses clear double side adhesive strips that securely attach to any computer screen. Option 2 (for computer screens with a raised bezel only) uses slide mount tabs that easily stick to the display frame, allowing you to take out the privacy screen filter easily as needed

Apply the same reasoning to nested objects and partial updates: a permitted parent object must not silently grant permission to every property below it. Also control response serialization deliberately, because object-property authorization applies to what callers can read as well as what they can change. OWASP groups these read and write risks under API3:2023, “Broken Object Property Level Authorization,” in its API Security Top 10 2023.

Test the stored result, not just the response

  1. Send a normal update. Change a permitted profile field and confirm the expected value is saved.
  2. Add an out-of-contract property. Repeat the update with an extra field such as role or an email-verification flag.
  3. Read the record back. Check persisted state and any relevant behavior to confirm the extra property did not change. A response that echoes submitted input does not prove whether it was stored or had an effect.
  4. Cover supported request shapes. Exercise the update verbs and nested payloads the API actually supports, so the same binding flaw is not present on another path.

Keep this as a regression check: an ordinary update must continue to work, while an added property outside that endpoint’s contract must not produce a persisted or behavioral change.
