To silence music from one app in Windows 11 while keeping other sounds available, open Settings > System > Sound > Volume mixer and mute that app or set its volume to zero. To end playback rather than silence it, use Pause or Stop in the player. To silence all Windows audio, use the system volume control.
Choose whether to stop playback or silence its sound

Find what is playing
Check open music apps and browser tabs first. If music starts when you begin a Windows Clock Focus session, check the session: Microsoft says Focus can play Spotify audio when a Spotify account is linked and a playlist or podcast is selected. You can stop the session or change its audio configuration. See Microsoft’s Focus guidance.

Stop playback in the music player
Use the player’s Pause or Stop control when you want playback itself to end. Muting through Windows only changes whether the app’s sound is audible; it is not a substitute for pausing or stopping. Player interfaces differ, so look for the playback controls in the app or browser tab that is producing the music.

Mute one app in Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > System > Sound > Volume mixer.
- Under Apps, find the music-playing app.
- Use that app’s mute control or move its volume slider to zero.
This keeps other app and system sounds available. Microsoft notes that “App volume controls can override system volume,” so check the music app’s own mixer setting when only its sound is the problem. The same Volume mixer page lets you check which output device an app is using; an app may be routed to a different device from the system default. Mute all Windows audio
Use the volume control in the taskbar to mute system audio when you want all Windows sound silent. This differs from muting one app in Volume mixer: the system control affects audio more broadly, while an app-level control targets that app. If music remains audible, check both the system level and the app’s level, as well as the app’s selected output device.
Windows 10: use the taskbar Volume mixer
In Windows 10, right-click the taskbar’s Volume icon and choose Open Volume mixer. Check the music app’s slider and mute state. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025; these steps describe its interface, while Windows 11 uses the Settings path above. If the music is still audible
- Confirm that you found the app or browser tab actually producing the sound.
- In Volume mixer, check the app’s volume or mute state and its selected output device.
- If the problem is not simply unwanted music but an audio failure, Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance includes restarting Windows Audio services and updating audio drivers. These are troubleshooting steps, not the first response to ordinary playback.
