Stop Buying Extended Warranties for Electronics Automatically—Do This Instead

Don’t accept an electronics protection plan automatically. Check existing coverage, read the contract’s fees and limits, and consider setting the cost aside for repairs.

For most electronics purchases, don’t add an extended warranty at checkout without checking what protection you already have. Read the product warranty, review the service contract’s full terms, and check the benefit guide for the card you’ll use. If the plan doesn’t add worthwhile coverage, put its cost into savings for a possible repair instead—the FTC recommends this as an alternative.

Why an electronics extended warranty may add less than it seems

An extended warranty or service contract is sold separately from the product. It may cover some of the same repairs during some of the same period as the warranty included with the device, so the word “extended” alone does not tell you when coverage starts or what it adds. The FTC advises consumers to compare the contract with the product’s existing warranty before paying extra. FTC: Extended Warranties and Service Contracts

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

That is a reason to make a deliberate decision, not proof that every plan is a bad deal. There is no current electronics-wide break-even rate established here that would show every buyer should always decline. A plan may suit someone facing a costly loss they could not comfortably absorb, if the written coverage meaningfully reduces that risk and the fees and claims process are acceptable.

What to check before buying a protection plan

Get the terms in writing and assess the plan as a whole—not just the amount shown at checkout. The FTC says warranty terms should be available before purchase and recommends reviewing coverage, duration, remedies, contact details, repair or shipping costs, and recordkeeping. If a repair or failure is not listed as covered in the contract, don’t assume it is. FTC: Warranties FTC: Extended Warranties and Service Contracts

  • Added coverage and timing: Which failures are covered, on what dates, and does the plan overlap the manufacturer’s warranty or begin after it?
  • Exclusions and out-of-pocket costs: Check the specific contract for deductibles, service or diagnostic fees, shipping, and exclusions. Depending on the plan, items to look for may include accidental damage, batteries, wear, cosmetic damage, software, data, pre-existing faults, or maintenance requirements. These are examples to verify, not universal exclusions.
  • Limits and remedy: Look for a cap on reimbursement, whether the provider repairs or replaces the device, and any conditions on that remedy.
  • Claims process: Identify the administrator, where repairs happen, what documentation is required, whether you must ship the device, and how reimbursement works.
  • Total cost: Add the plan price to any deductible, shipping, diagnostic, or other fees, then compare that total with a plausible repair or replacement cost and the plan’s reimbursement limit.

Check existing warranty and card protection first

Read the product’s written warranty before buying extra coverage, and keep it with the receipt. The FTC notes that implied warranties may also apply, but their details and duration depend on state law; some states may allow them to last as long as four years, which is not a nationwide guarantee. Readers outside the United States should check the protections that apply where they live. FTC: Warranties

Your payment card may offer a warranty extension, but eligibility and terms vary. Check the current benefit guide for the exact card used and confirm that the purchase qualifies; a possible card benefit is not a guarantee that your transaction is covered. Consumer Reports discusses card benefits as something to check, but does not establish that any particular reader or purchase qualifies. Do this instead: set aside the plan cost for repairs

If the plan duplicates existing coverage or its terms don’t justify the price, move the amount you would have paid into savings. The FTC identifies a savings account for repair costs as an alternative to buying an extended warranty. This gives you money to draw on if a covered-by-no-one repair comes up, without promising that savings will be enough for every loss. FTC: Extended Warranties and Service Contracts

How much protection this approach gives you depends on your budget and the device. If a major repair or replacement would be difficult to pay for, that exposure matters in your decision. Compare the plan’s real added coverage and total fees against the risk you would otherwise carry yourself.

Use this quick decision rule at checkout

  1. Read the included warranty. Note its coverage period, covered failures, remedy, and how to make a claim.
  2. Check the card benefit guide. Verify the exact card and purchase qualify; don’t rely on a general promise about card benefits.
  3. Read the full service contract. Confirm when protection starts, what it covers, exclusions, fees, caps, administrator, and claim steps.
  4. Compare costs and consequences. Weigh the plan’s total cost against a plausible repair or replacement and your ability to absorb that bill.
  5. Choose deliberately. Decline if coverage duplicates what you have, important risks are excluded, fees eat up the benefit, or the claims process or provider is hard to assess. Consider buying only if the written added coverage addresses a meaningful risk at a cost and process you accept.

Warranty terms and the ability to repair

Warranty language can affect where a device is repaired and what parts or providers are used. In July 2024, the FTC said it sent warning letters to eight companies over practices staff said could interfere with consumer repairs, including requirements to use specified parts or service providers and certain “warranty void if removed” stickers. This was a warning-letter context, not a blanket adjudication of every warranty term. The release quoted FTC Bureau of Consumer Protection Director Samuel Levine: “These warning letters put companies on notice that restricting consumers’ right to repair violates the law.” FTC: July 2024 warning-letter release
