AI is the broad field; machine learning (ML) is one way to build AI systems, and deep learning is a type of ML built around multilayered artificial neural networks. Natural language processing (NLP) focuses on language, while computer vision works with images and video. These areas overlap, and what an AI system can do depends on the task it was trained and evaluated for.
How are AI, machine learning, and neural networks related?
Think of AI as the umbrella, not a single technology. It includes different approaches to building systems that perform tasks associated with intelligence. ML is a major approach within AI: instead of relying only on explicit instructions, an ML system learns patterns from data and applies them to new inputs. Stanford Emerging Technology Review describes ML as enabling computers to perform tasks without explicit instructions, often by generalizing from patterns in data.

| Term | What it means | How it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Artificial intelligence (AI) | A broad category of software and methods for systems that perform tasks such as language processing, recognition, forecasting, reasoning, or robotics. | The umbrella category; not every AI system has to use machine learning. |
| Machine learning (ML) | A way to build systems that learn patterns from data and apply them to new situations. | A major approach within AI. |
| Artificial neural network | A model made of connected computational units, arranged in layers, that can learn relationships in data. | One family of models used in machine learning. |
| Deep learning | Machine learning that uses multilayered artificial neural networks to model complex relationships. | A subset of ML; neural networks are its central model family. |
The categories are useful, but their boundaries are not always sharp. Stanford Emerging Technology Review identifies machine learning, NLP, and computer vision as important AI subfields and notes that the boundaries between AI subfields are fluid. A single application can draw on more than one.

Training and use are also different stages. A model is trained on data so it can learn patterns; later, it applies what it learned to new inputs. That does not mean it has human-like understanding. For example, a large language model (LLM) is specialized for language: it learns patterns in text and predicts likely next pieces of language from context. OpenAI Academy describes AI as a broad category and models as trained systems applied to new situations.

What do NLP and computer vision do?
NLP and computer vision focus on different kinds of input, though systems can combine them. Stanford Emerging Technology Review defines NLP as equipping machines to understand, interpret, and produce spoken words and written texts.
| Field | Main input | Typical work | Example output |
|---|---|---|---|
| Natural language processing (NLP) | Written or spoken language | Interpreting, transforming, or generating language; working with speech and text. | A transcription, a translation, or a generated response. |
| Computer vision | Images or video | Turning visual information into something a system can recognize and use; analyzing pictures and video. | A recognition result or information extracted from an image. |
These are areas of work, not guarantees of competence. A system that can generate fluent text may not reliably answer every question, and a vision system built for one recognition task may not perform well on another. When a product combines text, images, speech, or video, it may use several techniques together rather than belonging to just one category.

Where do these methods appear?
AI applications span language generation and transformation, speech, visual recognition, image and video analysis, forecasting, reasoning, robotics, and systems that carry out sequences of tasks. The labels overlap: a robot might interpret camera input, process spoken instructions, and use learned models to select an action. The task is more informative than the label “AI” when deciding whether a system is suitable for a particular use.
The Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence’s 2026 AI Index Report surveys performance across language, images, video, speech, reasoning, robotics, and agentic systems. Its broad picture is progress that is substantial but uneven; strong results in one area do not establish ability in another.
Why do AI capability claims need context?
A benchmark or headline describes performance on a defined evaluation, not universal competence. A system can improve quickly on a measured task and still fail in situations the benchmark does not cover. The 2026 AI Index also finds that responsible-AI measurement is not keeping pace with capability measurement. That makes it important to ask what was tested, under what conditions, and whether those conditions resemble the intended use.
The report offers useful background figures, but none establishes that a particular tool will work for an individual task:
Rank #4
- The report’s dataset records 362 documented AI incidents, up from 233 in 2024. These are incidents documented in that dataset, not a count of all incidents worldwide.
- It reports 53% population adoption of generative AI within three years as a global framing. Adoption varies by country, so this is not a local or universal rate.
- It reports $285.9 billion in U.S. private AI investment in 2025 and compares it with China’s $12.4 billion in private investment. The report cautions that the private-investment figure likely understates China’s total AI spending because of government guidance funds.
Investment, adoption, and incident counts describe the wider AI landscape. They are not evidence of a specific system’s accuracy, safety, or value for your use case.

Start by defining the work you need done, then assess the system against that work rather than ranking tools by a broad label or headline. Consider:
Best Value
- Task performance: Does it succeed on representative examples, including difficult or unusual cases?
- Data fit: Does it handle the language, image types, subject matter, or other inputs you actually have?
- Reliability: How often does it produce errors, and how consequential are they? Decide whether a person needs to check its output.
- Cost and compute: What resources are required to run it at the scale and speed you need?
- Privacy and governance: What happens to the information you submit, and what rules or oversight apply to its use?
- Accessibility: Can the intended users access and operate it in their real working conditions?
Those questions turn “Is this AI good?” into a more useful one: “Does this system meet the needs and constraints of this task?”
