Apple’s consumer instructions cited here cover iOS 26; Apple’s iOS 27 developer session discusses Live Activities, not a new consumer Lock Screen battery setting.
Does Always-On Display drain battery?
Always-On Display keeps a dimmed Lock Screen visible while a supported iPhone is locked. Turning it off means the screen goes dark instead, trading glanceable information for a darker locked screen. Apple does not publish a quantified battery-savings estimate for switching it off.

Turn off Always On Display.
Apple’s iOS 26 guide says the feature is on by default on supported models. It also says the display automatically turns off in circumstances such as when the iPhone is face down or obstructed, when Low Power Mode or Sleep Focus is on, and at the user’s usual bedtime. If the label or path differs on your device, check its current Settings app.

Keep Auto-Lock enabled
Auto-Lock turns off the display and locks the iPhone after a period of inactivity. Apple warns that “Delaying or preventing Auto-Lock may increase power consumption.” Choose an interval that suits how you use your phone, but avoid preventing it from locking simply to keep the screen available. Apple also lists enabling Auto-Lock among its battery suggestions.
Why is my iPhone battery draining while it’s locked?
A Lock Screen setting is only one possible factor. Apps doing background work, weak cellular signal, and notifications that wake the device can also contribute. Use the Battery screen to distinguish these possibilities before changing more settings.

Look at the activity details for indications of background activity, low signal, or notifications waking the device.
Apple’s comparison with the prior seven days is a diagnostic view of your device’s usage, not a promised battery improvement or a population-wide statistic.

Allow time after an iOS update
If drain started immediately after an update, wait a few days and check Battery again. Apple says background tasks can continue after updating; the Battery page may show an Ongoing iOS Update insight while that work is occurring. Reassess after those tasks have had time to finish before attributing the change to the Lock Screen.
Check battery health separately
Lock Screen configuration cannot resolve a battery-health problem. Check Settings > Battery > Battery Health and follow Apple’s guidance if the device displays Service.

Apple’s cited consumer instructions for Always-On Display and battery diagnostics are for iOS 26. Apple’s WWDC26 developer session, Live Activities essentials, discusses Live Activities and their update mechanisms; it does not document a new iOS 27 consumer setting for reducing Lock Screen battery use. Apple’s iOS 26 feature overview supplies version context, not evidence of an iOS 27 battery optimization. If your iOS 27 settings differ, rely on the labels available on your device rather than assuming a new feature saves power.
