I Don’t Trust the LLM That Writes My Shared Memory: Three Regex Gates for Claude Code and Obsidian

Three regex checks can enforce simple rules before Claude Code writes shared memory to an Obsidian vault—but they cannot establish that an LLM-generated note is true.

“I don’t trust the LLM that writes my shared memory” is a useful starting point for a safer Claude Code–to–Obsidian workflow. The practical goal is to stop a proposed note from being written—or a change from being committed—when it violates clear rules. Three regex gates can enforce format and simple allowlists, but they cannot tell whether a memory is true. Anthropic documents the hooks that make pre-action checks possible; it does not prescribe this exact three-gate design.

What the gates can—and cannot—protect

A shared-memory note can outlive the session that produced it. If an agent writes a malformed path, unwanted content, or a false claim into a vault and a workflow commits it automatically, later sessions may treat that note as reliable context. A gate can reduce certain classes of mistakes by rejecting inputs that do not match a policy.

Regex is suited to checks such as “this heading has the required shape,” “this note is under an approved directory,” or “this commit message follows our convention.” It is not a truth detector. A statement can match every pattern and still be inaccurate, misleading, or out of date. Keep human review, version history, and backups in the workflow rather than treating a match as approval of the content.

The three gates below are a proposed author policy, not a scheme documented or endorsed by Anthropic. Adjust the expressions to the note format and repository rules you actually use. The available sources do not establish that a particular author’s vault is configured to auto-commit or that these example expressions have been tested.

Where Claude Code hooks fit

Claude Code hooks are configured in JSON settings and run commands at defined points in the tool lifecycle. Anthropic describes PreToolUse as running after Claude selects a tool and before the tool executes, making it a suitable place to reject a proposed write. A matcher selects which tool calls trigger a hook; documented examples include Write and Write|Edit. Matchers are case-sensitive. See Anthropic’s hook configuration guidance and the Claude Code hooks reference for the current event and schema details.

PostToolUse runs after a tool completes, so it can log or inspect a completed operation but cannot prevent that operation from having happened. Anthropic also describes Stop for deterministic end-of-task checks. The right event depends on the job: use a pre-action check when the write must be blocked, a post-action hook for logging or follow-up, and an end-of-task check when the workflow needs a final deterministic review.

Hook processes receive JSON on standard input. Anthropic documents exit code 2 as a blocking error and structured hook responses with decisions such as block or deny. The exact response format and effect depend on the event, so follow the current reference for the event being used; do not assume every nonzero exit or printed message blocks every hook in the same way.

Anthropic’s hook guidance says, “Hooks execute arbitrary shell commands with your user permissions.” That makes hook scripts part of the security boundary: quote shell variables, validate and sanitize input, use absolute script paths, and avoid exposing sensitive files. Anthropic also advises starting with one simple hook that solves an actual workflow friction point. See its hook configuration article before adding more checks.

Three regex gates to place before a write or commit

These are policy examples, not Anthropic defaults. Each assumes the script extracts a specific field from the hook’s JSON input and applies a full-string match to that field. Validate JSON with a JSON parser first; do not use a regex to parse arbitrary JSON or shell-interpolate untrusted content into a command. A failed check should return the documented blocking response for the event you have configured.

Gate 1: Restrict the destination path

Inspect the proposed file path and allow writes only under the vault’s intended memory directory, for example SharedMemory/. A conceptual pattern for a relative path is:

^SharedMemory/[A-Za-z0-9_-]+.md$

This accepts a simple Markdown filename such as SharedMemory/project_notes.md and rejects a path such as Inbox/project_notes.md. In a real script, resolve the path against the vault root and verify the canonical path remains inside it; a textual prefix alone can be fooled by traversal segments, symlinks, or path normalization. Account for the operating system’s path rules and the actual path field Claude Code supplies.

Gate 2: Require a predictable note shape

Inspect the note content for the minimum structure your shared-memory convention requires. For example, if every note must begin with a title line and then a source line, a line-oriented check could require a first line matching ^# .{1,100}$ and a second line matching ^Source: .+$. A note beginning with # Deployment checklist followed by Source: team handoff, 2026-10-09 fits that shape; a body with no title or source line does not.

Keep this gate narrow. Regex can require labels and bounded text, but it cannot establish that the cited source exists, that the note is current, or that the summary faithfully represents it. Avoid designing a pattern that silently accepts extra content or relies on regex features unsupported by the script’s regex engine.

Gate 3: Enforce a simple content or commit-message rule

Choose one field that matters to your workflow and reject known-disallowed forms. For a commit message, a simple conventional prefix check might be ^(memory|vault): .{1,72}$; it accepts memory: add project handoff and rejects update. If the policy instead concerns note content, make the rule explicit—such as rejecting a prohibited marker or requiring a specific metadata key—and inspect the exact content field, not a rendered or guessed representation.

This gate checks only the chosen pattern. It does not review the whole diff, determine whether a note belongs in shared memory, or prevent a different commit path from bypassing the hook. If committing is automated, check the commit operation at its own control point as well as checking file writes; a write hook and a commit hook are separate safeguards.

Choose the control point for each check

Hook event Timing Best fit What it can still prevent
PreToolUse After tool selection, before tool execution Validate a proposed path or write input The matched tool action, when the hook returns the documented blocking response
PostToolUse After the tool completes Log or inspect a completed write It cannot undo the operation already completed
Stop At the end of the response Run deterministic final checks or flag a workflow for review It can govern completion according to the event’s documented behavior, but it is not a substitute for preventing an earlier write

These events are complementary, not interchangeable. Confirm current event semantics and response schemas in the official hooks reference before implementing a blocking response.

Implement and operate the checks safely

  1. Define the policy first. Decide which directory can receive shared notes, the minimum acceptable note shape, and the one content or commit rule that matters. Write down accepted and rejected examples before encoding them.
  2. Parse hook input as JSON. Read the documented stdin payload and extract the relevant tool name and arguments with a JSON parser. Do not assume a field’s presence or format without checking the event schema.
  3. Match only the intended tools. Use a case-sensitive matcher such as Write or Write|Edit where appropriate. Separate a write check from a commit check if the commit is performed through a distinct tool or command.
  4. Validate and block explicitly. Apply the gates to the extracted values. On rejection, return the documented blocking result for that event and provide a concise reason that helps the workflow recover. A message alone is not necessarily a block.
  5. Test in a disposable vault. Exercise allowed and rejected paths, malformed input, missing fields, unusual filenames, and content with newlines or shell metacharacters. Verify that a rejected case truly prevents the action and that an allowed case does not broaden access unexpectedly. These are recommended tests, not results claimed for the example patterns here.
  6. Keep an independent recovery route. Review diffs before accepting valuable memory, retain version control history, and back up the vault. Regex checks can be bypassed by alternate paths or fail to capture a semantic problem, so recovery matters even when the hooks work as intended.

Use regex as one layer, not the trust decision

Anthropic’s power-user guidance describes permissions and sandboxing as additional controls and suggests deterministic checks for auditable workflows. Those controls serve different purposes: permissions and sandboxing constrain what the process can access, while hooks inspect particular workflow actions. A regex gate should not be presented as a complete security boundary or as evidence that generated memory is correct.

A community repository demonstrates one Claude Code–Obsidian integration with session-save and commit-capture hooks plus validation helpers: the integration example. It is a community example, not evidence that this three-gate design is effective, nor an endorsement or guarantee of compatibility by Anthropic or Obsidian. Check its current status and compatibility before choosing it as a dependency.
