If your Xbox controller keeps dropping its Bluetooth connection in Windows 11, work through the checks in order: run Windows’ Bluetooth troubleshooter, check battery and range, pair the controller again, then look at power settings, drivers and updates. A wired test can help identify whether the problem is limited to the wireless connection.
1. Run the Windows Bluetooth troubleshooter
Open the Get Help app and run its Bluetooth troubleshooter. Microsoft recommends this automated check for repeated Bluetooth disconnections; it may identify a Windows-side issue before you change settings manually. See Microsoft’s Bluetooth disconnection guidance.

2. Check battery, distance and pairing mode
Charge the controller or try fresh batteries, move it closer to the PC, and make sure it is in pairing mode when you attempt to connect. Microsoft notes that some Bluetooth devices may not enter pairing mode or maintain a connection when battery power is low. These simple checks can rule out power, range and pairing-state problems before you troubleshoot Windows further. Microsoft’s Bluetooth connection troubleshooting steps also cover these basics.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →3. Remove the controller and pair it again
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices.
- Find the controller in the device list and choose the option to remove it.
- Select Add device > Bluetooth, put the controller into pairing mode, and select it when it appears.
Removing and re-adding a Bluetooth device is a standard Windows troubleshooting step when it appears in Settings but will not connect reliably. If it still drops, continue to the Windows power and driver checks.

4. Check Windows power settings and Bluetooth components
Energy Saver and adapter power management
Check whether Energy Saver is enabled. You can also inspect the Bluetooth adapter’s power-saving setting in Device Manager: open Device Manager, expand Bluetooth, open the Bluetooth adapter’s properties, and look for a power-management option. If Windows provides a checkbox that allows the computer to turn off the device to save power, clear it and test the controller again. The setting may not be available on every PC or adapter.
Bluetooth Support Service
Restart Bluetooth Support Service using the Services app: open Services, find Bluetooth Support Service, right-click it, and choose Restart. If the restart option is unavailable, move on to the driver and Windows Update checks.

Bluetooth driver
In Device Manager, check for an available driver update for the Bluetooth adapter. If Windows does not find one, check the PC manufacturer’s support site for a driver intended for your exact PC model and Windows version. Microsoft identifies outdated drivers, power-saving settings and temporary system glitches among possible causes of repeated Bluetooth drops; that does not establish which one is responsible for a particular controller.

Open Settings > Windows Update, check for available updates and install them, then restart the PC. Microsoft includes Windows updates and a restart among its recommended steps for Bluetooth connection trouble. After restarting, try the controller again before changing more settings.

6. Compare Bluetooth with a USB cable
Connect the controller to the PC with a compatible USB cable and see whether it remains usable. The connector depends on the controller model, so use a cable that fits yours. If it works over USB but continues to disconnect over Bluetooth, that points toward the wireless connection path rather than proving the controller itself is faulty.
A Microsoft Q&A answer recommends, in this situation, reconnecting the controller by cable, checking for a controller update in the Xbox Accessories app, then disconnecting the cable and trying wireless pairing again. Treat this as support guidance, not a guarantee: it does not establish firmware as the cause, and steps can vary by controller revision. The Q&A answer’s publication date is not established. 7. Decide whether another wireless connection method makes sense
If the controller works over USB but Bluetooth remains unreliable after the checks above, an Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows is a possible alternative connection path mentioned in Microsoft Q&A. It changes how the controller connects; it does not repair the PC’s Bluetooth stack. Confirm that the specific adapter and controller revision are compatible with your Windows 11 PC before buying one. The cited Q&A does not provide a model-by-model compatibility list or establish current retail availability.
