A laptop fan that runs constantly is usually reacting to heat from ongoing work or restricted airflow—not proof that the fan is broken. Check what is using the computer, make sure its vents are clear, and then use diagnostics and guidance for your specific model. If the laptop overheats, slows down, makes abnormal noise, or reports a fan error, contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair service.
Why a laptop fan may run constantly
Ongoing CPU or graphics work
Demanding apps, graphics-heavy games, video compression, software updates, and background indexing can keep a processor or graphics chip busy. The resulting heat makes the cooling system run harder. Apple lists video compression, graphics-intensive games, and Spotlight indexing after migration as examples; Dell notes that Windows updates and other open applications can sustain workload. Blocked vents or dust
Air intake and exhaust vents need room to work. A soft surface, nearby obstruction, or accumulated dust can restrict airflow and increase cooling demand. Place the laptop on a hard, level surface and keep its vents unobstructed. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning; HP advises turning the computer off before cleaning its vents in its fan-noise troubleshooting guidance.

Some laptops offer a quieter thermal or power profile, but availability and controls depend on the model. Software problems can also contribute to sustained activity. If the fan remains abnormal after workload and airflow checks, or a manufacturer diagnostic reports an error, a hardware problem is possible—but the symptom alone cannot identify a failed fan or a replacement part.

Check whether the fan behavior is expected
Notice when the fan speeds up and what else the laptop is doing. If it becomes quieter after a demanding task or update finishes, while temperatures and performance seem normal, the fan may simply be cooling the system. A brief burst at startup can also be normal: HP says, “It is normal for the fans to spin loudly for five to twenty seconds when the computer initially turns on.” That statement applies to the notebook PCs covered by HP’s guidance, not necessarily every laptop.
For HP notebook PCs covered by its support page, HP notes that a constant CPU load of 3% to 4% can make fans spin faster. This is not a universal threshold; behavior depends on the laptop and its configuration.

How to troubleshoot a constantly running fan safely
- Improve airflow. Move the laptop to a hard, flat surface. Check that intake and exhaust vents are not covered by fabric, a wall, or nearby objects.
- Let a hot laptop cool. If the computer feels unusually hot, stop demanding work and let it cool. Inspect external vents for visible dust or obstruction, and clean them only as the manufacturer recommends. Do not open the laptop or disable its fan.
- Find active workloads. Open Task Manager on Windows or Activity Monitor on macOS and look for applications using substantial CPU or graphics resources. Identify a process before closing it; do not terminate unfamiliar system processes casually.
- Check what coincides with the noise. A game, video export, update, or indexing task may explain the fan activity. Let legitimate updates or background tasks finish, then see whether the fan settles.
- Use model-specific controls and diagnostics. Consult the laptop maker’s support instructions for your exact model. Run its available diagnostics and check whether it offers a thermal or quiet profile. Such a mode is not available on every laptop.
- Escalate persistent or abnormal symptoms. Contact manufacturer support or a qualified repair service if the laptop overheats, performance drops, the fan makes abnormal noise, a diagnostic reports an error, or the fan remains unusually active after basic checks.
When a cooling accessory may help
A cooling pad may help in some setups, but it is not a universal fix for a constantly running fan and cannot repair a failed fan. Check workload and vent clearance first, and follow the laptop maker’s model-specific recommendations before relying on an accessory.
