The easiest way to set up a personal VPN is to install your provider’s official app, sign in, approve the device’s VPN configuration request, and connect. A work or school VPN is different: use the profile and server, protocol, and sign-in details supplied by your organization. The right steps depend on your device and VPN provider.
Choose the right setup method
First identify who provides the VPN. For a personal subscription, get the app or setup instructions from the VPN provider’s official website or the device’s official app store. For work or school, follow the organization’s onboarding instructions or contact its IT department. Do not guess a server address, protocol, username, certificate, or configuration file.

Install a VPN app on a supported device
Provider apps are generally the simplest route when available. The exact screens vary by provider, device, and operating-system version; use the provider’s current instructions for your platform. Providers may have different installation paths for Windows, Mac, Android, iOS, Linux, TVs, and other devices.

- Install the official VPN app, then open it and sign in to your account.
- When the operating system asks to add or configure a VPN connection, review the prompt and approve it if you intended to install the app.
- Choose a server or the app’s automatic option, if offered, then select Connect.
- Check that the VPN app reports a connected state. If it does not, use the app’s help instructions or contact the provider.
Set up a VPN manually in Windows 11
Manual setup is appropriate when your organization or provider gives you the required configuration. Microsoft notes, “Before you can connect to a VPN, you must have a VPN profile on your device.”

- Open Settings > Network & internet > VPN, then select Add VPN.
- For VPN provider, choose Windows (built-in).
- Enter a connection name, then enter the server name or address supplied by your IT department or VPN provider.
- Choose the VPN type and sign-in method specified in your setup instructions. Enter only the supplied credentials or other required information.
- Save the profile. Return to the VPN settings page, select the connection, and choose Connect.
- Confirm that Windows displays Connected for the VPN profile.
Windows also supports organization-managed configurations involving decisions such as routing, authentication, name resolution, and automatic connection behavior. These are not beginner adjustments: follow IT instructions rather than changing them yourself. Microsoft’s VPN technical guide was last updated January 27, 2025.
Set up a VPN on an Apple device
On Apple devices, use the provider’s app unless your organization or service gives you explicit manual settings. Apple documents support for protocols including IKEv2/IPsec and SSL-VPN through an appropriate app, with options and constraints that vary by platform and configuration. The protocol and authentication method must match the VPN server.

Features such as VPN On Demand, per-app VPN, and Always On VPN involve deployment or device-management requirements. They are not ordinary consumer setup switches that every user can enable independently. Consult Apple’s VPN security documentation, published January 28, 2026, or ask your administrator for the configuration intended for your device.
When your device has no direct VPN app
Do not assume every smart TV or game console can run a VPN app. Available options depend on the device generation, operating-system version, and provider. Check the provider’s instructions for the exact device; possible routes include a supported router, virtual router, or another provider-specific setup.

A VPN configured on a compatible router can route traffic from devices connected through that router, but router setup is more involved than installing an app. Confirm the precise router model and VPN service are compatible before buying hardware or changing network settings. A provider’s router instructions are one example of a device-specific setup resource.
Basic checks if the VPN will not connect
- Confirm the app or VPN profile is installed on the device.
- Check that you are signing in with the correct account details or credentials supplied by your organization.
- Try reconnecting, then check the VPN app or operating-system status. In Windows, look for Connected on the VPN settings page.
- If authentication fails, the server is unavailable, or the protocol appears mismatched, contact the provider or your organization’s IT team. Do not substitute different server or protocol values by guesswork.
Windows 10 users: check support status
Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. In 2026, consult Microsoft’s Windows 10 lifecycle information and its current security guidance; prefer a supported operating system for ongoing use.
