It supports YouTube search or pasted links, but its README warns that downloading YouTube audio violates the platform’s terms for public products and says to keep that use personal. Separation runs on your computer after setup; the first launch downloads about 2 GB of engine files, according to the project’s documentation.
What StemKit does
StemKit is designed to split songs into stems—separate audio parts such as vocals, drums, bass, and instruments—then let you listen to and work with those parts in a synchronized player. The project describes six possible categories: vocals, drums, bass, other, guitar, and piano. Which parts can be separated depends on the selected model and its output; the project pages do not provide independent accuracy measurements.

You can mute, solo, and adjust the volume of individual stems. The interface also includes waveforms with click-to-seek, playback alongside the source video, and presets such as Karaoke and Acapella. Stem separation can run in parallel in the background with progress shown in the app. These are features described by the project, not independently tested performance results.
How to use it for practice or arrangement study
- Install and complete first-launch setup. StemKit lists macOS 12 or later on Apple Silicon, Windows 10 or 11 on x64, and Linux x64 (Ubuntu 22.04 or equivalent). The app handles its Python runtime if Python 3.9 or later is not detected; you do not need to install Python manually, according to the README.
- Choose a source. The project describes searching YouTube inside the app or pasting a link. For material you have permission to use, you can also work from an appropriate local source where supported by the app.
- Select stems and let processing finish. Pick the parts you want to hear, then use the player’s mute, solo, volume, waveform seeking, and presets to focus on a vocal line, rhythm section, or other part.
- Play along or export. Use the synchronized player for listening and practice, or export one stem or all stems as WAV files. The project says those files can be imported into DAWs such as Ableton, Logic, FL Studio, or GarageBand.
The documented controls support isolating and listening to parts, but the available sources do not establish a particular playback-speed or pitch-shifting feature. If slowing a part down is essential to your practice routine, check the current release’s feature list before relying on StemKit for that workflow.

Setup downloads and processing options
The README says the separation engine download is approximately 2 GB. It also says ffmpeg is bundled and that optional quality upgrades have separate downloads. The listed options are release-specific and can change:
- Mel-Band Roformer model: an additional 913 MB download, as stated in the README.
- Fine-tuned Demucs model: an additional download of approximately 320 MB, as stated in the README.
- Two-shift refinement: a processing setting that may take up to three times longer, according to the project.
StemKit lists CPU processing and GPU processing using NVIDIA CUDA. The README also names AMD GPUs on Linux through experimental ROCm support. Expect the compute time and available options to depend on your hardware and configuration; the project pages provide no independent timing benchmarks.

Privacy: local processing, with an install-count ping
The project describes StemKit as local and offline after setup, and says songs, videos, searches, the library, and audio remain on your machine rather than being uploaded. Its README summarizes this as “Everything runs locally — no accounts, no API keys.” It also discloses a first-run POST to a Cloudflare Worker for install counting. The payload contains a random install ID, app version, operating system, and architecture. The project says it does not use cookies or identifiers tied to the user, or build IP-address-based profiles; if the first attempt fails, it retries on a later launch.

The README says users building from source can remove the telemetry module, or block the worker domain. The project’s privacy notes and telemetry code are available in its GitHub repository.
Important limits on YouTube use
StemKit’s README states: “Downloading audio from YouTube violates their ToS for public products — keep this personal.” That is the project’s warning, not a legal ruling or a statement from YouTube. The project documentation does not establish that downloading or reusing any particular song is permitted. Check the applicable platform terms and rights for the specific material and use case rather than treating the app’s ability to accept a YouTube source as permission.

Is StemKit a good fit?
StemKit is worth considering if you want one desktop workflow for separating parts, listening to them with the source video, and exporting WAV stems. Its local-processing approach may also suit users who prefer not to upload songs to a service. The trade-offs are a sizeable initial download, processing that depends on your computer, platform-specific GPU support, and no independently established separation-quality benchmark in the project materials.
For an occasional practice session, the built-in player and stem controls may be enough. If you need polished, cleanly isolated parts for a release or professional mix, evaluate the output on your own material before making it part of a critical workflow; separation can leave artifacts, and StemKit’s official pages do not quantify its results.
