Start with the student’s grade, location, preferred way of working, and available time and support—not the contest’s name or prize. STEM competitions range from individual research applications and local-fair qualification pathways to school tournaments and coached robotics teams. The right fit depends on what a student wants to do and whether they can meet the entry rules and practical demands.
What to compare before choosing a competition
Check these factors before committing to a project, school team, application, equipment, or travel:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Eligibility: grade, age, geography, school status, and any division rules.
- Format: individual entry, school team, coached team, or advancement through another event.
- Work product: original research, an individual project, event performance, or robotics work.
- Preparation: application sections, recommendations, reports, materials, adult coaches, and time.
- Assessment: how entries are reviewed, how tournament points are awarded, and whether advancement is required.
- Full cost: entry or membership fees, materials, local event charges, and travel.
- Local access and timing: whether a nearby fair, school team, or event is available in the current cycle.
A student can meet an age or grade condition and still be ineligible because of geography, school placement, or an entry pathway. Confirm the current rules with the organizer for the relevant location and season.
How the main competition formats differ
| Competition | Typical format and work | Key eligibility or entry condition | Workload, cost, or timing to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regeneron ISEF | High-school research competition reached through an affiliated science fair. | Grades 9–12 or equivalent; a student must qualify through an affiliated fair and cannot apply directly. | Local fair dates and selection rules vary. Projects involving certain human or biological subjects may need prior review. See Society for Science’s ISEF rules. |
| Regeneron Science Talent Search (STS) | Individual high-school research application with holistic review. | Check current application eligibility and requirements with Society for Science. | Requires a research report, recommendations, a high-school report or transcript, and application sections. The 2027 application closes November 5, 2026, at 8 p.m. ET. |
| National STEM Festival U.S. Competition | Individual project submission. | For the 2027 U.S. competition: grades 7–12, at least 13 by April 11, 2027, and ordinarily resident in one of 56 U.S. competition regions. Citizenship is not required; eligible homeschooled students may apply. | Each applicant may submit one project; team projects are not accepted. Confirm the current cycle’s rules and region list. |
| Science Olympiad | School team tournament with events scored toward team results. | Division B or C rules govern placement; a student may compete in only one division and at one school. Division B teams may have up to 15 members under the cited rules. | The official page lists a $75 national membership fee for 2025; verify the fee for a later season. State and local fees and deadlines vary. |
| FIRST LEGO League, Grades 6–8 | Coached team robotics program for ages 11–16. | Teams intending to compete at events need two dedicated adult coaches. | FIRST estimates $1,400 for an 8-student option or $4,400 for a 24-student option; local event fees are separate. Materials and availability may vary by region. |
Individual research and project entries
Regeneron ISEF: a qualifying route, not a direct application
ISEF is for students in grades 9–12 or equivalent, but eligibility alone does not create an entry. Students generally begin at a local fair, progress through higher levels where applicable, and must be selected by a Society for Science affiliated fair. Society for Science says affiliated fairs operate across all 50 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, and more than 75 countries, regions, and territories. Use its fair directory to locate a fair, then check that fair’s dates and selection rules directly.

Some research topics require advance attention to safety and review. Society for Science’s ISEF rules cover projects involving vertebrate animals, human participants, or potentially hazardous biological agents. Contact the relevant fair’s Scientific Review Committee before starting experimentation if the project raises these issues.
Regeneron Science Talent Search: an application built around independent research
STS is an individual high-school research application rather than a school-team tournament. Its required materials include an original independent research report, an educator recommendation, a project recommendation, a high-school report or transcript, and sections about the student, research, prior projects, activities, and use of time. Students should assess the reporting and recommendation workload before choosing this route.

Students compete in only one division and for one school. Under the rules on the cited page, Division B teams may have up to 15 members. The official page lists a $75 national membership fee for 2025 and says membership includes a Rules Manual and access to preparation resources. That 2025 amount should not be assumed for a later season; check current national, state, and local requirements with the Science Olympiad organization.
FIRST LEGO League, Grades 6–8: robotics with adult coaching
FIRST LEGO League Grades 6–8 is a team program for ages 11–16. Teams planning to compete at events need two dedicated adult coaches. FIRST says, “No technical skills are required!” of coaches; that describes the coach role, not the preparation expected of students.
