To steer a local coding agent, configure more than a local model: choose a model runtime, connect it to an agent harness that can work with your files and tools, give it durable project instructions, and review its changes and checks. A local model endpoint by itself does not provide a coding-agent workflow or guarantee that every tool and piece of session data stays local.
What does a local coding agent need?
Keep four parts distinct when setting up an agent. They may be bundled in one application or provided by separate software, but each does a different job.

- Model: Generates responses and proposed code.
- Runtime: Loads the model and serves inference, often through a local endpoint.
- Agent harness: Runs the coding loop: it gives the model access to files and tools, handles tool calls, manages sessions, and presents changes or approval requests.
- Project guidance: Supplies repository-specific conventions and recurring workflow instructions.
OpenJet’s documentation distinguishes the model runtime from the harness and describes connections to Ollama, LM Studio, llama.cpp, and other OpenAI-compatible local servers: OpenJet documentation. Aider also documents local-model use, including Ollama: Aider’s Ollama guide. Check that the harness supports your runtime and exposes the file and shell tools your task actually needs; a server that can answer prompts is not automatically an agent that can safely edit a repository.
How do you keep the agent following project rules?
Put recurring guidance in the harness’s project-level instruction mechanism rather than relying on a long prompt that must be repeated by hand. Aider documents how to specify coding conventions: Aider coding conventions. VS Code documents custom instructions and Agent Skills for shared conventions and repeatable workflows: VS Code customization overview.
#1 Best Overall
Useful project guidance is specific and actionable. It can identify the relevant test command, style rules, files or generated artifacts to avoid, and how the project expects changes to be validated. Keep task-specific directions separate: state the requested outcome, constraints, relevant files, and what would count as completion. Instructions help steer behavior; they do not replace checking the work.
Which kind of local coding-agent setup should you choose?
Terminal pair-programming tools, IDE agent interfaces, and a separate harness connected to a model server can all support local workflows. Choose by the capabilities you need rather than by the word “local” alone.

Apache Magpie and Stanford Sherlock also document integrations involving coding-agent front ends or local model configuration, illustrating that the harness and runtime can be separate components: Apache Magpie project and Stanford Sherlock Ollama guidance. Their configurations apply to those documented environments, not every local setup.
How should you set context size?
Check the context available end to end: the model, runtime, and harness must all accommodate the amount of context the task needs. A large context setting can be useful for a broad repository task, but it does not make irrelevant files useful; give the agent the pertinent material where the harness allows it.

Stanford Sherlock’s undated documentation, accessed in 2026, describes Ollama’s default context as 2k tokens and says Claude Code requires at least 64k tokens in that documented configuration: Stanford Sherlock’s Ollama configuration page. These are specific, software-dependent configuration figures—not universal requirements for all models or coding agents. Check current documentation for your runtime and harness, then confirm the effective setting rather than assuming the runtime default is sufficient.
How do you keep the workflow local and controlled?
A local model endpoint does not prove that every tool call, integration, or item of session state stays on your machine. Inspect the endpoints used by both the model and the harness, including any tools or integrations the agent can invoke. OpenJet says that, when its local profile is selected, “The model, agent loop, tool execution, and session state remain on hardware you control.” Its documentation also describes an air-gapped mode that rejects non-loopback endpoints: OpenJet privacy documentation. Those claims describe OpenJet’s own modes, not a general guarantee for local-agent software.

Limit the tool surface to what the task requires and review approval requests before allowing sensitive actions. VS Code’s agent guidance includes reviewing approvals, changes, and validation results: VS Code agent workflow guidance. A local endpoint is a privacy boundary only if the rest of the workflow respects it.

There is no universal hardware minimum established for local coding agents. Memory and compute needs depend on the model, quantization, context length, and harness. OpenJet’s undated hardware documentation, accessed in 2026, lists Apple silicon with at least 24 GB of unified memory or a GPU with at least 14 GB of VRAM for its terminal coding agent; it also says CPU-only use can work: OpenJet hardware guidance. Treat those as OpenJet-specific guidance, not a general performance benchmark or guarantee that a particular model will fit or run well.
Quick Recap
Best Value
A practical setup and review loop
- Pick the harness first. Confirm it supports your intended local runtime and has the file, shell, and approval controls needed for the task.
- Connect the runtime. Configure the harness to use the local server endpoint, then verify that it is using the intended model.
- Add durable project guidance. Record stable conventions and repeatable workflows in the harness’s repository-level instruction or skill mechanism.
- Set the task boundary. Describe the desired outcome, constraints, relevant files, and validation criteria. Expose only the tools and access needed where controls permit.
- Check context configuration. Verify the context available through the full model-runtime-harness path against the task and current product documentation.
- Review before and after execution. Read approval requests before sensitive actions; inspect the diff and run or examine the relevant validation results before accepting the change.
