SteelSeries Arctis Nova Pro Wireless vs. Audeze Maxwell: Which Gaming Headset Is Better?

Audeze Maxwell wins for sound, microphone quality and single-charge endurance; SteelSeries Nova Pro Wireless wins for ANC, transparency, battery swapping and multi-system connectivity.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the Audeze Maxwell if sound quality, microphone clarity and long uninterrupted battery life matter most. Choose the SteelSeries Arctis Nova Pro Wireless if you need active noise cancellation (ANC), Transparency Mode, simultaneous Bluetooth and game audio, hot-swappable batteries or a base station that switches between two systems. Neither is universally better: Maxwell is the audio-first choice, while Nova Pro Wireless is the more versatile multi-device headset.

SteelSeries Nova Pro Wireless vs. Audeze Maxwell at a glance

These are premium wireless headsets, but they solve different problems. Maxwell puts its budget and physical design toward large planar magnetic drivers, a high-quality boom microphone and an unusually large battery. Nova Pro Wireless adds hardware and software conveniences that are valuable in a shared room or a multi-platform setup: ANC, Transparency Mode, a dual-USB-C base station, simultaneous Bluetooth and game audio, and two batteries that can be swapped without waiting for a recharge.

Decision factor SteelSeries Arctis Nova Pro Wireless Audeze Maxwell Wireless
Primary design goal Feature-rich wireless control across systems and listening environments High-fidelity game and music audio with long single-charge endurance
Driver technology Dynamic drivers with SteelSeries Sonar processing and spatial-audio options 90 mm planar magnetic drivers (Audeze current specification)
Noise control Active noise cancellation and Transparency Mode Original Maxwell documentation does not list ANC
Microphone Retractable bidirectional ClearCast microphone; SteelSeries claims up to 25 dB of noise reduction Detachable boom microphone with beamforming; independent testing rates voice reproduction higher overall
Battery approach Two hot-swappable batteries; up to 30 hours per battery with 2.4 GHz and ANC off, according to GamesRadar+ Audeze claims 90 hours; another official specification says over 80 hours of wireless playback at 80 dBA
Charging downtime One battery can charge while the other is in use near the base station One internal battery; the headset must be charged when it runs low
Wireless features 2.4 GHz wireless, Bluetooth, dual-USB-C base station and quick system switching Bluetooth 5.3, multipoint, LE Audio, LC3/LC3plus, LDAC, AAC and SBC, plus platform-specific wireless dongles
Platform caution Choose the correct console/PC connection arrangement for your setup PlayStation and Xbox editions use platform-specific dongles; verify the edition before ordering
Best match Shared rooms, travel, phone-and-console multitasking and multi-system owners Music listeners, detail-focused gamers, streamers and anyone who dislikes frequent charging

The battery figures are not directly equivalent measurements. Audeze publishes both a 90-hour marketing claim and a more specifically qualified “over 80 hrs wireless playback @ 80dBA” figure. The Nova figure is quoted with 2.4 GHz and ANC switched off and applies to each replaceable battery. Treat the conditions as part of the specification rather than as a laboratory head-to-head result.

What each headset is built to do

SteelSeries Arctis Nova Pro Wireless

Nova Pro Wireless is a wireless headset system rather than just a pair of headphones. Its dual-USB-C base station accepts two system connections, provides controls and charging for the removable batteries, and is intended to make switching between systems quick. Bluetooth can operate alongside game audio, so a phone call, music stream or notification can be mixed with console or PC sound.

SteelSeries also includes ANC and Transparency Mode. ANC reduces outside sound; Transparency Mode deliberately feeds room sound back in, which is useful when someone speaks to you or when you need to hear a doorbell without removing the headset. The retractable ClearCast microphone keeps the boom out of the way when you are listening alone. SteelSeries says the bidirectional microphone can provide up to 25 dB of noise reduction, a manufacturer claim rather than a universal measurement for every room.

Audeze Maxwell Wireless

Maxwell is built around 90 mm planar magnetic drivers. Planar drivers use a thin diaphragm driven across a magnetic field, a design that can deliver strong bass with lower distortion than many conventional dynamic-driver arrangements. The headset has Bluetooth 5.3, a detachable beamforming boom microphone and a large internal battery. It is sold in platform-specific versions, so the PlayStation and Xbox labels are not interchangeable purchasing details.

Maxwell’s feature list is more focused. Its documentation does not identify ANC, and it should not be treated as an ANC headset. Its advantage is the quality and consistency of the core audio path: large drivers, modern Bluetooth codecs and a microphone designed to reject off-axis sound. If you mostly use one system and want the fewest compromises in playback quality, that focus is meaningful.

Sound quality: Maxwell has the stronger case

The Maxwell’s planar magnetic drivers are the clearest reason to choose it. Independent testing from RTINGS reports that the design can produce more bass while keeping distortion lower than common dynamic-driver designs, and rates Maxwell above Nova Pro Wireless overall for sound. That does not mean Nova sounds poor. Nova remains appealing when you want to shape the presentation extensively with SteelSeries Sonar, equalization and spatial-audio processing.

For music and cinematic games

Maxwell is the safer choice when the headset will double as your main music headphone. Its driver headroom and lower reported distortion can make dense mixes, orchestral scores and bass-heavy effects easier to follow. Bluetooth 5.3 codec support also gives phones and tablets more connection options than a basic wireless headset, although the codec actually used depends on the source device and its settings.

Nova Pro Wireless can be more entertaining for players who enjoy changing profiles. Sonar lets you tune equalization and spatial presentation for different games or listening preferences. Processing can be useful, but it also means that your result depends on software configuration, the active profile and the game’s own surround mix. A carefully tuned Nova may suit you better than a neutral Maxwell; the hardware comparison alone cannot predict an individual preference.

For competitive positional audio

Neither headset earns a universal esports verdict from the available evidence. Nova’s software and connectivity toolkit can be useful for quickly changing profiles or combining audio sources. Maxwell’s planar-driver detail and lower reported distortion can help you hear subtle textures and positional cues. Your game, equalization, spatial processing and hearing preferences all influence the outcome. If you compete seriously, test your familiar maps with your own settings rather than assuming that a product label guarantees better positioning.

Microphone quality: Maxwell is clearer in independent testing

RTINGS reports that Maxwell’s microphone performs better overall than Nova Pro Wireless’ microphone, particularly for clear voice reproduction in noisy conditions. Maxwell uses a detachable boom and a beamforming array, so the microphone can be positioned close to your mouth and uses multiple inputs to emphasize your voice.

Nova’s ClearCast microphone is retractable, which is convenient when you move between gaming and ordinary listening. SteelSeries’ claim of up to 25 dB of noise reduction describes the microphone design, not a guaranteed reduction in every keyboard, fan or household environment. Nova is adequate for voice chat, but Maxwell is the stronger choice for frequent group calls, streaming or recordings where intelligibility matters more than hiding the boom.

Maxwell’s detachable boom is also a trade-off. You can remove it for music or travel, but it is another component to store and reconnect. Nova’s retractable boom is permanently attached and less easy to lose, though it cannot be removed completely.

Noise control and awareness

Choose Nova for ANC

Nova Pro Wireless is the only one of these two models with documented active noise cancellation. That makes it better suited to a shared living room, an office, public transport or travel. ANC is most useful against steady low-frequency sounds such as ventilation, engines and air conditioners. It is not a guarantee that every voice or sudden sound disappears.

Transparency Mode is the companion feature. Instead of isolating you, it feeds outside sound into the headset so you can hold a short conversation or monitor your surroundings. The ability to toggle between ANC, Transparency and ordinary listening without removing the headset is one of Nova’s most practical advantages.

Maxwell does not replace an ANC headset

The original Maxwell documentation does not list ANC. It may still block some sound through its ear-cup seal, but that is passive isolation, not electronically generated cancellation. If you specifically need to hear the room on demand or reduce travel noise, Maxwell’s audio quality does not compensate for the missing feature.

Battery life and charging

Maxwell: the longest uninterrupted session

Audeze’s current Maxwell product page advertises “class-leading 90-hour battery life.” A separate official specification lists “over 80 hrs wireless playback @ 80dBA.” The two statements use different wording and test conditions, so quote them with those qualifications. In practical terms, Maxwell is designed for long stretches between charges and is the better fit if you routinely forget to plug in a headset.

Nova: two batteries eliminate most downtime

Nova Pro Wireless uses two removable batteries. GamesRadar+ lists up to 30 hours per battery when using 2.4 GHz wireless with ANC off. One battery can charge in or near the base station while the other powers the headset, allowing near-continuous use if you remain within reach of the charging setup. Turning on ANC, changing the wireless mode and raising volume can reduce runtime, so the 30-hour figure is not a universal result for every configuration.

The designs suit different habits. Maxwell minimizes how often you think about charging. Nova requires more battery management but can avoid the hard stop that occurs when a single internal battery is empty. If you play away from the base station for long periods, Maxwell’s one-charge endurance is simpler. If you spend most sessions at a desk or console, Nova’s swap system can be more convenient than waiting for a recharge.

Connectivity, Bluetooth and platform compatibility

Nova’s base station favors multi-system setups

The Nova base station has two USB-C system connections and is designed for quick switching. This is useful when a gaming PC and console share a desk, or when you regularly move between two consoles. Bluetooth can run at the same time as game audio, allowing phone audio and gameplay to coexist without repeatedly pairing and unpairing devices.

Before buying, map your actual setup: count the systems you want connected, identify which device will use each USB-C connection and confirm that the included cables and ports fit your desk. The advantage is greatest when you switch often; for a single system, the base station is additional hardware you may not fully use.

Maxwell’s Bluetooth 5.3 feature set is broader

Maxwell supports Bluetooth 5.3 features including multipoint, LE Audio, LC3 and LC3plus, LDAC, AAC and SBC. Multipoint can keep two compatible devices connected, while codec availability depends on the phone, computer, operating system and selected Bluetooth mode. A supported codec on the headset does not force a source device to use it.

Comfort, fit and physical design

There is no controlled, directly comparable comfort result for every head shape in the available testing. Headband pressure, ear-cup depth, glasses, hair and preferred clamping force can change the answer. Maxwell’s large planar-driver construction and Nova’s base-station-and-battery design also create different weight distributions, but a specification sheet cannot tell you whether either will develop a hot spot on your head.

Check the retailer’s return window before opening the package, and use it as part of your decision. During a short fit test, wear the headset for at least 30 minutes, adjust the headband and microphone, and check whether your glasses touch the cushions. A headset that sounds excellent but causes discomfort after an hour is the wrong headset for your use.

Which headset is better for each type of buyer?

Buy Maxwell for audio-first use

  • You listen to music as often as you play games.
  • You want the strongest documented sound and microphone performance of these two models.
  • You prefer more than 80 hours of claimed wireless playback between charges.
  • You use one main system and do not need ANC or a base-station switcher.
  • You want Bluetooth 5.3 codec and multipoint features for compatible devices.

Buy Nova Pro Wireless for feature-rich flexibility

  • You need ANC for a shared room, office or travel.
  • You want Transparency Mode so you can hear people without removing the headset.
  • You mix phone Bluetooth with game audio.
  • You switch between two USB-connected systems.
  • You prefer replacing a battery immediately instead of waiting for an internal battery to charge.
  • You want Sonar’s equalization and spatial-audio customization.

For competitive FPS

Choose based on the feature you will actually use. Nova is the more flexible tool for profiles, simultaneous connections and system switching. Maxwell is the stronger hardware choice for planar-driver detail and microphone clarity. The available evidence does not establish one universal winner for competitive play, so prioritize your game’s audio mix, your preferred processing and the microphone standard your teammates expect.

Buying and setup checks

Before ordering

  1. Write down every device you will connect: PC, PlayStation, Xbox, phone or tablet.
  2. For Nova, check that two USB-C system connections fit your desk and that you will benefit from a base-station switcher.
  3. For Maxwell, verify the platform edition on the product listing; do not rely on a generic “Maxwell” name.
  4. Decide whether ANC and Transparency Mode are essential. If they are, Maxwell is not an equivalent substitute.
  5. Compare the return policy and regional availability. Prices, stock, firmware and software behavior change by market and over time.

After setup

  1. Update the headset and its companion software or firmware when the manufacturer provides an update for your edition.
  2. Test game audio, microphone monitoring and Bluetooth separately before changing equalizer or spatial settings.
  3. For Nova, test both USB-C inputs, system switching, ANC, Transparency Mode and simultaneous Bluetooth.
  4. For Maxwell, test the wireless dongle, Bluetooth multipoint and the microphone with the boom at a consistent distance.
  5. Save a neutral profile before experimenting with spatial processing, so you can return to a known baseline.

Prices, editions and changing specifications

No stable price for a specified market is established here. Retail pricing, stock, platform bundles and promotions vary by country and date, so check the current listing in your region rather than treating an old price as a permanent value judgment. The same caution applies to firmware behavior and companion software.

Keep this comparison limited to the original SteelSeries Arctis Nova Pro Wireless and original Audeze Maxwell Wireless. Newer or differently named models can change battery, ANC, microphone and connectivity specifications. Confirm the exact model name, platform edition and included wireless hardware before purchase.

Verdict

Audeze Maxwell is better for most audio-first buyers. Its 90 mm planar magnetic drivers, stronger microphone results in independent testing and 80-plus-hour qualified battery claim make it the superior choice for music, detailed game sound and long sessions with minimal charging.

SteelSeries Arctis Nova Pro Wireless is better when versatility is the priority. ANC, Transparency Mode, simultaneous Bluetooth and game audio, hot-swappable batteries and a dual-USB-C base station solve problems Maxwell does not address. Pick Nova when those features describe your daily setup; pick Maxwell when sound and endurance come first.
