The Steelers’ official depth chart lists Pat Freiermuth and Darnell Washington together in the first tight-end column, with Robert Tonyan next. That identifies the current group, but it does not establish a fixed snap order: tight-end usage can change with personnel packages. Freiermuth and Washington both have documented receiving production, while Washington’s size and Pittsburgh’s use of tight-end-heavy formations point to a physical dimension—not an exclusive blocking assignment.
Who is listed at tight end for the Steelers?
The Steelers’ official depth chart places Freiermuth and Washington together in its first tight-end column, followed by Tonyan. Ourlads’ chart, updated October 2, 2026, instead presents them in sequential order: Freiermuth, Washington, then Tonyan. Those are two charting formats; the team chart is the primary reference for Pittsburgh’s current listing.

What the chart does—and does not—tell you
A depth chart is a roster-ordering aid, not a play-by-play forecast or a playing-time projection. Steelers.com explained on August 5, 2025, that multiple tight ends may be listed as starters because the offense uses different personnel packages, and that insertion into a game can depend more on the package than on chart order. That explanation is useful context, but it predates the current chart and does not establish that its precise convention is unchanged.

For the current listing, read the first column as identifying Freiermuth and Washington together rather than declaring one an undisputed every-down starter. The chart alone does not reveal their snap shares, weekly assignments, or who will be on the field for a specific formation.
How Freiermuth, Washington and Tonyan compare
Pat Freiermuth: established receiving production
Freiermuth had 41 receptions for 486 yards in 2025, according to NFL.com’s statistics. That is meaningful evidence of a receiving role, but it should not be read as a guaranteed target count or projection for another season.

Darnell Washington: size and receiving production
Washington is listed at 6-foot-7 and 264 pounds. NFL.com described Pittsburgh’s tight-end-heavy formations in 2025 as adding size and blocking force, a team-level signal that supports a physicality angle for the position group. It does not establish that Washington blocks on every snap or lacks a receiving role: NFL.com also credits him with 31 catches for 364 yards in 2025. The cited formation description does not assign a precise share of those duties to an individual player.

Robert Tonyan: third on the chart, assignment not quantified
Tonyan appears after Freiermuth and Washington on the Steelers’ current chart. The available chart and statistics do not establish a target share, snap share, or specific weekly assignment for him, so his exact opportunities cannot be inferred from his position in the listing alone.

Receiving numbers: distinguish season totals from live snapshots
Published numbers show that both Freiermuth and Washington have contributed as receivers. For 2025, NFL.com lists Freiermuth at 41 receptions for 486 yards and Washington at 31 receptions for 364 yards. These season figures provide historical context, not a forecast for current usage.
For 2026, the live pages do not agree in the available snapshots. NFL.com’s player pages show Freiermuth with 11 catches for 108 yards and Washington with 6 for 92. The Steelers’ live team statistics page shows Freiermuth at 14 receptions for 125 yards and two touchdowns, Washington at 9 for 119 and one touchdown, and Tonyan at 1 for 2. These are page snapshots, not reconciled final totals; the differing figures should not be combined or presented as though they match.

The evidence supports saying Freiermuth has receiving production and Washington has receiving production too. It does not establish a current target hierarchy or prove how those opportunities will be divided going forward.

What to watch when judging their roles
- Personnel package: A formation using multiple tight ends can put both Freiermuth and Washington on the field; chart order alone cannot predict which package Pittsburgh will call.
- Assignment versus body type: Washington’s listed size and the team’s documented emphasis on size and blocking force suggest a physical fit, but they are not evidence of a snap-by-snap blocking assignment.
- Receiving evidence: Both players recorded receptions and receiving yards in 2025. Past totals confirm production, not future targets.
- Third tight end: Tonyan is listed behind the two in the team chart, but that does not quantify his game-day role or opportunities.
