In Steam’s September 2026 Hardware & Software Survey, 32 GB was the largest system-memory group and the GeForce RTX 5070 was the most common individual graphics-card model in the reported sample. Neither result means that most PC owners have 32 GB of RAM or that the RTX 5070 is the best card to buy: Steam’s survey is optional, anonymous, and describes participating Steam users.
What does the latest Steam Hardware Survey say?
Valve describes the survey this way: “Steam conducts a monthly survey to collect data about what kinds of computer hardware and software our customers are using.” Participation is optional and anonymous. The September 2026 results are therefore a snapshot of participating Steam users, not a census of PC owners or a measure of gaming performance. Valve’s Steam Hardware & Software Survey

The percentages below come from Hardware Busters’ October 2026 reporting, rather than directly extracted figures from Valve’s survey page. The report gives separate results for the combined sample and Windows-only memory view; those figures should not be conflated.

Not in the sense that a majority has it. In the combined September sample, 32 GB was the leading memory-capacity group at 42.22% — Hardware Busters, 2026; 16 GB accounted for 37.82% — Hardware Busters, 2026. Because 42.22% is below half, 32 GB was a plurality, not a majority. Hardware Busters’ September 2026 survey report
#1 Best Overall
- Boosts System Performance: 32GB DDR5 RAM laptop memory kit (2x16GB) that operates at 5600MHz, 5200MHz, or 4800MHz to improve multitasking and system responsiveness for smoother performance
- Accelerated gaming performance: Every millisecond gained in fast-paced gameplay counts—power through heavy workloads and benefit from versatile downclocking and higher frame rates
- Optimized DDR5 compatibility: Best for 12th Gen Intel Core and AMD Ryzen 7000 Series processors — Intel XMP 3.0 and AMD EXPO also supported on the same RAM module
- Trusted Micron Quality: Backed by 42 years of memory expertise, this DDR5 RAM is rigorously tested at both component and module levels, ensuring top performance and reliability
- ECC Type = Non-ECC, Form Factor = SODIMM, Pin Count = 262-Pin, PC Speed = PC5-44800, Voltage = 1.1V, Rank And Configuration = 1Rx8
In the report’s Windows-only view, 32 GB stood at 43.28% and 16 GB at 37.60%. This is a different platform-filtered slice, so use the combined-sample figures when describing the overall reported sample and the Windows figures only when specifically discussing Windows respondents.
| Memory capacity | Combined September sample | Windows-only view |
|---|---|---|
| 32 GB | 42.22% — Hardware Busters, 2026 | 43.28% — Hardware Busters, 2026 |
| 16 GB | 37.82% — Hardware Busters, 2026 | 37.60% — Hardware Busters, 2026 |
The survey reports what respondents use; it does not establish what amount of RAM a particular game or player needs. A system upgrade decision still depends on the games and applications you run, as well as whether your computer supports the memory type and capacity you intend to install.
What is the most popular graphics card on Steam?
Hardware Busters reported the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 as the most common individual graphics-card model in the September sample, at 5.86% — Hardware Busters, 2026. That was up from 3.56% in August, a rise of 2.30 percentage points. This is model prevalence among survey respondents, not a performance ranking, value comparison, or recommendation.
Rank #2
- Disclaimer: Maximum Speed requires overclocking/PC BIOS adjustments. Maximum speed and performance depend on system components, including motherboard and CPU
- AMD EXPO & Intel XMP 3.0 Compatible Only: Dual memory profiles allow you to easily select optimized settings for your platform, whether you’re running an AMD or Intel processor
- Onboard Voltage Regulation: Enables easier, more finely-tuned, and more stable overclocking through CORSAIR iCUE software than previous generation motherboard control
- Maximum Bandwidth and Tight Response Times: Optimized for peak performance on the latest AMD and Intel DDR5 motherboards
- Hand-Sorted, Tightly-Screened Memory Chips: Ensure consistent high-frequency performance with aggressive timing options
“Most common individual model” also does not mean the RTX 5070 was used by most respondents: its reported share was 5.86%. The result says which listed model led the individual-model figures, not which GPU is suitable for a particular game, budget, or display resolution.
Why should month-to-month changes be read carefully?
The composition of the reported sample shifted in September. Hardware Busters said the Simplified Chinese share rose 7.42 percentage points to 31.39% — Hardware Busters, 2026. The report also notes that Valve does not cross-tabulate the hardware results by language, so the effect of this change in respondent composition on particular hardware figures cannot be calculated from the available reporting.
That limitation is a reason for caution when interpreting month-to-month movements, not evidence that the hardware results are invalid or that one language group caused a specific change. The survey remains a useful snapshot of its respondents, but the published figures do not isolate sample-composition effects.

- G.SKILL Flare X5 Series DDR5 U-DIMM Memory Kit, Model: F5-6000J3636F16GX2-FX5
- Non-ECC, DDR5 U-DIMM, 288-pin, for Desktop PC & Gaming

- Do not mix memory kits. Memory kits are sold in matched kits that are designed to run together as a set. Mixing memory kits will result in stability issues or system failure.
What else does the September snapshot show?
Display figures provide context for the systems represented in the report: 1920×1080 was reported at 47.91%, while 2560×1440 reached 27.04%, up 5.18 percentage points. These are display-resolution shares in the survey reporting; they do not show which resolution a particular GPU can handle well in a given game.

Does the Steam survey show what PC gamers should buy?
No. Adoption figures answer what participating users reported using, not what another buyer should choose. A GPU purchase needs current price, availability, compatibility, and relevant game benchmarks; the survey result alone supplies none of those comparisons. Likewise, a 32 GB RAM figure does not establish that an individual computer needs more memory.
Quick Recap
- Use the RAM result as evidence that 32 GB was the largest capacity group in this survey sample, not as proof that it is a universal standard.
- Use the RTX 5070 result as a popularity snapshot among individual GPU models, not as evidence of speed or value.
- For an upgrade, verify the system’s motherboard, processor, laptop constraints, memory generation, and available slots before buying RAM.
