That reverses the behavior Valve had announced for the Stable client on September 1, when it added HDR streaming support for the device. Valve has not stated a reason for the beta change, and the October 10 beta notes do not say HDR was restored.
What changed in the Steam client
Valve’s October 9, 2026 Steam Preview/Beta release notes include this Remote Play entry: “Disabled HDR when streaming to the OLED Steam Deck.” This confirms the change was recorded for that beta update; it does not establish the behavior of every client build, game, or streaming setup.

The note does not explain why HDR was disabled or say whether the change was temporary. Treat it as a dated beta-client change, not a confirmed permanent removal of HDR streaming across Steam.

How this differs from the earlier HDR support announcement
| Date and channel | What Valve recorded | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| September 1, 2026 — Stable Steam Client | Valve announced “Added support for HDR streaming on Steam Deck OLED” in Remote Play, alongside an improvement to video color range. See Valve’s Stable client notes. | HDR streaming support was announced for the OLED Deck in that Stable update. |
| October 9, 2026 — Preview/Beta Steam Client | Valve wrote: “Disabled HDR when streaming to the OLED Steam Deck.” See the Preview/Beta notes. | That beta update recorded HDR as disabled when streaming to OLED Decks. |
| October 10, 2026 — Preview/Beta Steam Client | Valve listed a fix for crashes when using a controller to interact with streaming dialogs in the beta notes; no HDR restoration is mentioned. | The listed follow-up covers another Remote Play issue, not whether HDR was later restored. |
These notes describe updates from different dates and channels, rather than contradictory behavior in the same build. The October 9 entry is the later documented change for the beta client.

Has HDR streaming returned, and why was it disabled?
The October 10 beta notes do not mention HDR being restored, but silence in one update is not proof that no later fix exists. The release notes cited here do not provide a reason for the disablement either. They establish what Valve recorded in those updates, not the state of every user’s current client or a later build.
If you are checking your own setup, look at the current Steam client release notes and test the behavior on the build installed on your Deck. Do not assume that the October 9 beta note describes the current Stable client or every OLED Deck streaming session.

Other Remote Play changes in the October 9 beta
The HDR entry appeared among several Remote Play fixes. Valve also listed fixes for a stream failing to launch after a host cloud conflict, very low bitrate when hardware decoding is disabled, an initial network-health dialog, Vulkan decoding with the SteamRT3C Linux beta, and fallback to H.264 when HEVC is unavailable. These entries provide context for the update, but Valve did not link them to the HDR change or identify them as its cause.
