Marketing automation can support sales by identifying promising prospects, nurturing them with relevant messages, scoring their engagement, and routing sales-ready leads to a salesperson. Connected CRM data and shared reporting can help marketing and sales coordinate that work. These capabilities can improve prioritization and follow-up, but they do not guarantee higher revenue.
How marketing automation supports the sales process
Marketing automation is software that runs marketing tasks and campaigns according to defined workflows. Salesforce describes workflows that coordinate messages across channels and use prospect activity to inform what happens next. In a sales context, the goal is to connect useful marketing interactions with timely, informed follow-up—not to automate the salesperson out of the process.

- Collect activity and profile information. A system records relevant signals, such as a prospect registering for a webinar or engaging with content, alongside available CRM data.
- Segment and nurture prospects. Based on agreed characteristics or behavior, the workflow can send relevant communications rather than treating every lead the same way.
- Score and qualify engagement. Teams can use interaction data and agreed criteria to distinguish prospects who may warrant sales attention from those who need more time or information.
- Route sales-ready leads. When a prospect meets the shared threshold, the workflow can pass the lead to sales with context about the prospect’s activity.
- Report on what happens next. Closed-loop reporting connects campaign activity with later stages of the sales process, helping teams assess what is contributing to progress.
Salesforce gives webinar registration and subsequent content engagement as an example of activity that can lead to a sales handoff. That is an illustration of a possible workflow, not evidence that every such sequence produces a sale. Salesforce’s marketing automation guide describes these capabilities.

More focused follow-up
Lead scoring and qualification can help salespeople prioritize prospects who have shown relevant interest. The benefit depends on whether the scoring rules reflect meaningful buying signals; a high score built on weak or outdated signals can send sales in the wrong direction.
#1 Best Overall
More relevant conversations
When CRM data and prospect interactions are available to both teams, sales can see what a lead has engaged with and tailor a follow-up accordingly. Salesforce describes using CRM-connected behavior and customer information to inform content and sales pitches. The information is useful only if it is accurate, current, and appropriate to use.
Less repetitive coordination
Automated communications and routing can reduce manual work involved in routine follow-up and handoffs. They do not remove the need for staff to maintain the workflows, check data quality, handle exceptions, or respond personally when a prospect is ready for a conversation.
Rank #2
Better visibility across the funnel
Campaign reporting can help teams examine whether leads progress beyond initial engagement and how marketing activity relates to later sales stages. Attribution is not the same as proof of causation: a report can show an association without establishing that automation alone produced a sale.

Automation is most useful when sales and marketing work from compatible definitions and shared information. Salesforce’s alignment guide emphasizes agreeing on lead qualification, goals, metrics, and closed-loop reporting. Without those agreements, marketing may send leads that sales considers unready, while sales feedback may fail to improve future targeting.

- Agree on a qualified lead. Define the criteria and the signals that justify a handoff, rather than relying on an unexplained score.
- Set ownership and timing. Decide who receives a routed lead, what follow-up is expected, and how the team records the outcome.
- Keep CRM records usable. Establish who corrects missing, duplicate, or stale information and how changes are reflected in workflows.
- Review shared measures. Track movement through the sales cycle, not just message opens or lead volume, and use sales feedback to revise criteria.
Salesforce’s guide to sales and marketing alignment discusses shared qualification and reporting practices. Automation can support those practices, but it cannot decide what the teams should agree on.
What automation cannot guarantee
A workflow does not create demand simply because it sends messages or assigns scores. Results depend on the quality of the data, the relevance of the message and offer, the qualification rules, and whether sales follows up promptly and appropriately. Poorly designed automation can amplify bad records, send irrelevant communications, or route weak leads faster.

Vendor pages sometimes cite performance figures for productivity, overhead, qualified leads, purchase size, or marketing return. Salesforce’s benefits page attributes figures to Nucleus Research, Annuitas Group, and a Salesforce Relationship Survey conducted from 2014 to 2016; the reviewed page does not establish the original studies’ methods and dates for the first two sources. The survey figure is based on Salesforce customers, not a universal estimate for businesses. Those figures should not be treated as promised outcomes or current benchmarks without checking the original studies and their populations. Salesforce’s benefits page presents the claims and attribution.

How to decide whether automation is a fit
Start with a sales-process problem, not a feature list. Automation is a stronger fit when a team has repeatable follow-up tasks, useful prospect data, an agreed qualification process, and enough capacity to maintain workflows and act on routed leads.
- Identify a specific bottleneck, such as delayed follow-up or inconsistent lead qualification.
- Check whether the relevant CRM fields and activity data are reliable and shared.
- Agree on qualification criteria and the handoff process with sales before building a workflow.
- Choose measures tied to sales progression, while recognizing that attribution alone does not prove cause.
- Review results and exceptions regularly; revise or stop workflows that generate irrelevant messages or unproductive handoffs.
HubSpot also discusses automation as a way to support alignment and conversion, but vendor explanations describe intended use rather than independent proof of a particular sales lift. HubSpot’s overview offers another vendor perspective on the category.
