For Total War: WARHAMMER III, Steam Workshop is the more integrated subscription route: supported Workshop integrations download subscribed mods through Steam and handle updates. Nexus Mods gives you files to install through a manager or manually, so you need to check each mod’s page and manage updates yourself. Steam’s “Verify Integrity of Game Files” checks the base-game installation; it does not verify that mods are current, compatible, or safe for a campaign.
How the two mod sources handle updates
Steam Workshop: subscribe through the game’s integrated source
The WARHAMMER III Steam Workshop lets players browse mods, subscribe, and use filters such as “Last Updated” and “Required DLC.” Steamworks says that in a Ready-to-Use Workshop integration, subscribed content is downloaded through the Steam client and the Workshop handles keeping that client up to date with mod updates. That is general platform documentation, not a guarantee about a particular mod’s compatibility or the exact timing of an update.

The Workshop page also includes a “Most Required by Other Items” area, which can help surface dependencies. Neither that area nor the browsing filters establish that a mod works with your exact game version, save, or other installed mods. The page notes that mods are made by players and are not officially licensed by Games Workshop.

Nexus Mods presents WARHAMMER III mods as files on individual mod pages. The TW Mod Manager listing describes support for WARHAMMER III, Nexus downloads, and manual installation. It also lists dependency tracking, conflict viewing, and a way to force-check Workshop updates when Steam does not. These are manager features, not guarantees that every conflict will be detected or that every Nexus file updates automatically.

What “Verify Integrity of Game Files” actually means
SEGA’s mod troubleshooting instructions describe locating active mods in the Total War launcher, deactivating or deleting them, unsubscribing through Steam, and verifying game files after removing mods. In that context, verification is about the game installation.

A successful verification is not a verdict on downloaded mod files. It does not establish that a mod is updated for the current patch, compatible with another mod, safe for an existing campaign, or free of issues. The consulted sources do not establish a comparative Steam-versus-Nexus guarantee for checking mod files.
Can updating or removing a mod affect a campaign?
It can. SEGA warns that a current campaign may depend on its mods and that a new campaign may be needed after those mods are removed. Because neither platform promises to preserve a compatible setup automatically, keep track of the mod versions and load order used for a campaign. Before changing a campaign’s mod set, consult the mod author’s guidance and consider whether you can continue without those mods.

A practical checklist before changing mods
- Check the mod information. Review its last-updated date, supported game version, required DLC, dependencies, and author notes. Workshop offers update and DLC browsing filters, but the individual mod’s details still matter.
- Record a working setup. Note the mod versions and load order for a campaign so you can identify what changed if a problem appears.
- Diagnose problems by disabling mods first. If trouble begins after a mod change, deactivate or unsubscribe from mods as part of diagnosis. Bear in mind that a mod-dependent campaign may not continue after its required mods are removed.
- Verify game files only for the installation. Use Steam’s game-file verification as a base-game troubleshooting step, not as proof that any mod is compatible or up to date.
- Use a manager when its features help. For a large or mixed list, TW Mod Manager may be useful if you need its listed profiles, dependency and conflict tools, Nexus integration, or Workshop update checks. Its Nexus listing specifies Windows 10, Steam, and 7-Zip for local installation; a manager is optional, not an official SEGA or Valve requirement.
