GOG is generally the better choice if offline independence is your priority: its games are required to be DRM-free, and GOG offers offline installers you can keep and run without Galaxy. Steam also supports offline play, but you need to prepare in the Steam client before disconnecting, and games that depend on an internet connection or an external launcher may not work.
How Steam and GOG handle offline play
| Decision | Steam | GOG |
|---|---|---|
| How offline play works | Use Steam’s Offline Mode after preparing the client and games while online. Steam Support explains Offline Mode. | GOG’s DRM-free policy says games should work regardless of Galaxy authentication, Galaxy client presence, or internet availability. GOG Developer Docs describe the policy. |
| Install without the storefront client | Valve’s general Offline Mode guidance describes a Steam-client feature, not a standalone offline installer. | Download the game’s offline backup installer from your GOG account and run it without Galaxy. GOG Support describes downloading and installing offline backup installers. |
| What still needs preparation | Save your credentials, update the game, launch it once, and switch Steam to Go Offline before disconnecting. | Download the installer and any required files while online, then keep them available for installation. |
| Offline limitations | Games requiring an active connection or external launcher may fail; connected Steam features are unavailable. | Online features such as multiplayer, friend retrieval, and leaderboards are unavailable without a connection. |
That makes GOG the more independent option for installing and launching a supported single-player game. Steam can be convenient when it is already installed and prepared, but Offline Mode is not a guarantee that every title will launch without the network.

Prepare Steam before going offline
Do this on the computer you plan to use, while it is connected to the internet. Steam’s Offline Mode instructions recommend completing setup before disconnecting.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Steam and sign in with Remember me enabled. Allow Steam to save your account credentials on that computer.
- Make sure each game you intend to play is fully updated.
- Launch each game once while online. This gives it a chance to complete setup or reveal an additional installation or update requirement.
- In Steam, select Steam > Go Offline while still connected.
- Close Steam normally so it can preserve the information it needs for offline use.
While offline, you cannot use Steam features that require a connection, and updates must wait until Steam is online again. If a game still refuses to launch, an active-connection requirement or an external launcher may be the reason.

Install a GOG game without Galaxy
GOG’s DRM-free policy is intended to let supported games work without Galaxy authentication, the Galaxy client, or an internet connection. To install without Galaxy, download the offline backup installer and required files from your account before you lose internet access.
- While online, sign in to your GOG account and download the game’s offline backup installer and all required files.
- Keep the downloaded files somewhere accessible. Suitable existing storage is enough; an external drive is optional for carrying or backing up large installers.
- Run the installer to install the game without Galaxy.
- Launch the installed game using its executable.
Being DRM-free does not make online services available offline. GOG’s developer documentation lists multiplayer, friend retrieval, and leaderboards as examples of features that need a connection. See GOG Developer Docs’ introduction for background on the platform and its Galaxy client.

Check the individual game before relying on it
Neither store’s general policy proves that a particular game will work offline in every circumstance. A title may have its own active-connection requirement, external launcher, publisher account check, or online-only feature. Requirements can also change with patches or launcher updates.
- Read the current store listing and the publisher’s support information for connection, launcher, and account requirements.
- Test the exact game on the computer you will take offline, using the same account and installation you plan to use.
- For a long trip or extended time without internet, complete the preparation and test launch before leaving.
Choose GOG when standalone installers and independence from the storefront client matter most. Choose Steam when its library or features better suit you, after confirming that each intended game works in Offline Mode.
