How to Fix Steam Downloads That Are Stuck or Slow

Check Steam’s speed limit and units, then troubleshoot the queue, cache, download region, storage, and network to get a stuck or slow download moving.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start by checking Steam’s download limit and confirming that you’re comparing the same units: internet plans are usually advertised in bits per second, while Steam often displays bytes per second. Then check the download queue, clear Steam’s download cache, and compare your current download region with nearby regions. If the speed still drops, watch disk activity and test your local network before investigating security software, your ISP, or a Steam outage.

How can I troubleshoot slow downloads or connections within Steam?

Work through the checks below in order, starting with changes that are quick to reverse. The Download Manager and download settings can help distinguish a Steam limit or queue issue from a region, storage, or network problem.

  1. Check Steam’s displayed units and bandwidth limit. Open Steam > Settings > Downloads and see whether a download limit is enabled. Make sure you compare Steam’s rate with your internet plan using the same units.
  2. Inspect the Download Manager. Check which item is downloading, whether other items are queued, and whether the download appears to have stopped progressing. Pause and resume the download or restart Steam; restarting the computer is also among Steam’s basic update-troubleshooting steps.
  3. Clear the download cache. Go to Steam > Settings > Downloads > Clear Download Cache and confirm. You’ll need to sign in to Steam again afterward.
  4. Test another download region. In Steam > Settings > Downloads, try your current region and one or more nearby regions. Compare results rather than assuming a farther server will be faster.
  5. Check whether installation, not the network, is holding things up. Watch disk and CPU activity while Steam downloads and installs. If disk activity remains high as the displayed network rate falls, give installation time to catch up and check available space or drive health.
  6. Test the local network. Pause other bandwidth-heavy activity and, if possible, connect the computer directly to the router with Ethernet. If that improves the download, investigate Wi-Fi coverage, interference, or router settings.
  7. Investigate outside Steam if needed. Consider security or filtering software, the ISP, and Steam service conditions. Use a different time or network to help narrow down the cause; don’t leave security protections disabled.

Is your download actually slow?

Steam often reports downloads in bytes per second, but broadband plans are commonly stated in bits per second. Since one byte equals eight bits, multiply Steam’s bytes-per-second figure by eight for a rough comparison with a bit-rate plan—or change the client’s display to bits if that option is available. Steam’s example is 768 KB/s = 6144 Kb/s, or about 6 megabits per second (Steam Support).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the configured limit in Steam > Settings > Downloads as well. A limit set there can cap the rate regardless of the speed available from your internet connection. Client labels and display units may vary by version.

What should I check in the download queue?

The Download Manager shows downloads and updates in progress, including their order. If the item you care about is waiting behind another download, reorder the queue or pause the other item. Steam also provides per-game update preferences; depending on the game, you can defer an update until you launch it. Find the relevant game’s update preferences through its Steam properties and adjust them if the queue behavior is the issue (Steam Support: downloads and updates).

If an item appears stuck, pause and resume it, then restart Steam. A computer restart is another basic troubleshooting step. These checks can refresh a stalled client or queue, but they won’t resolve a slow content server, a full or struggling drive, or an ISP problem.

When should I clear Steam’s download cache?

Try clearing the cache if a game won’t download or start, or a download appears stuck despite the queue and limit checks. In Steam, open Steam > Settings > Downloads > Clear Download Cache, then confirm. Steam says installed games are not affected, but you will need to log in again (Steam Support). Menu wording can differ between client versions.

Could the download region be the problem?

Steam uses content servers associated with a selected region. A nearby server may be slow, overloaded, or affected by a fault, so compare your current region with nearby alternatives rather than treating the nearest option as automatically best. Change the setting in Steam > Settings > Downloads, test the download, and keep the region that works better for your connection. Server conditions can change, so this is a diagnostic comparison, not a guarantee that a particular region will be faster (Steam Support).

Why does the speed fall while Steam installs a game?

A low download-rate figure doesn’t always mean your internet connection is slow. Steam can use substantial CPU and disk resources to install files, and it may throttle the reported download rate to match how quickly it can complete those other tasks. Steam’s hardware support documentation also notes that SD-card write speed can affect total installation time (Steam Support: hardware and installation).

Compare the network rate with disk activity while the download runs. If disk activity stays high as the network rate drops, let Steam finish processing and check that the target drive has free space and is functioning normally. If practical, try installing to another Steam library drive; a different result can help identify whether the original drive is the bottleneck.

How can I tell whether Wi-Fi or the wider network is at fault?

Pause other bandwidth-heavy activity and test a direct wired connection to the router if you can. Steam identifies wireless and powerline interference as possible causes and notes that a less congested router channel may help (Steam Support).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Wired is faster: Focus on Wi-Fi coverage, interference, or router settings. Testing another router channel may help if congestion is the issue.
  • Wired is no better: Continue checking Steam’s settings and download region, installation activity, and possible ISP or Steam-service conditions.

On Steam Deck, a compatible USB-C-to-Ethernet adapter may be needed to test a wired connection. Confirm that any adapter works with your device before buying it; an adapter or cable will not fix a slow server, a disk bottleneck, or an ISP problem.

When should you check security software, your ISP, or Steam services?

Steam lists firewalls, antivirus, packet filtering, and other programs that monitor or modify network or disk activity as possible sources of download problems. If you test whether one of these is interfering, do so cautiously and restore your normal protection afterward. Do not leave security software disabled as a workaround.

If downloads repeatedly slow at particular busy times, test again at a different time or, if possible, on another network. Steam notes that an ISP may shape traffic in some circumstances; a comparison can help you decide whether to contact the provider. If multiple Steam downloads or services appear affected at once, check Steam service status before changing local settings. Contact your ISP or Steam Support when the available comparisons point to their service rather than your device or local network.
