How Steam Remote Play and Moonlight differ
Steam Remote Play reaches an Android phone or tablet through Valve’s Steam Link app. The natural setup is to run Steam on the host PC, install Steam Link on Android, and connect the two. It is a good first option when the games you want to play are in Steam.

Moonlight is a streaming client that connects to host software on your PC. Its Android listing describes streaming games, programs, or the full desktop, locally or over the internet. Moonlight’s setup guide identifies Sunshine as a host option, with built-in Steam and Desktop entries as well as the ability to add games and apps manually.

What you need to set up each option
Steam Link for Steam Remote Play
Valve’s Android support page lists Steam Link for Android 5.0 and newer and says it supports many phones, tablets, and TVs. Its setup requires Steam running and signed in on the host PC, the Android device on the same network for initial local use, and the Steam Link app. Follow the app’s pairing prompts. Steamworks also lets game developers create recommended touch-control layouts for phones and tablets and adjust them for different screen aspect ratios. That does not mean every Steam game has an equally polished touch layout: support and suitability can vary by title. Steamworks: Touch controls
Moonlight with Sunshine
- Install Sunshine on the host PC and complete its first-time setup in Sunshine’s web interface.
- Install Moonlight on Android and connect it to the host. Pair the devices by entering the PIN shown in Moonlight into Sunshine’s interface.
- Choose a Steam or Desktop entry, or add a game or app in Sunshine and launch it from Moonlight.
Moonlight’s setup guide lists Android 4.1 or newer for its client and recommends a capable Android device for smooth hardware video decoding. Check the current app listing for the requirements that apply to your device and version. Moonlight setup guide

Network quality matters more than a blanket winner
For either option, the connection between the PC and router and the Android device’s Wi-Fi can affect the experience. Moonlight recommends a mid- to high-end wireless router, 5 GHz Wi-Fi for the Android device, and Ethernet from the PC to the router. Valve also names a 5 GHz wireless router in its Android Steam Link support materials. These are setup recommendations, not guarantees of a particular latency or image quality. That describes Valve’s technology; it is not evidence that Steam Link beats Moonlight in a matched Android test. To compare them fairly, try the same game, host PC, Android device, Wi-Fi location, resolution, and frame-rate settings, and judge responsiveness and image quality in the places you actually play.

Android controllers: check compatibility before buying
Steam’s published Android examples include the Steam Controller, Xbox One S controller, DualShock 4 on Android 9.0 or newer, Razer Kishi, and Raiju Mobile. Valve notes other input devices may work without being officially supported. Steam Support: Android controller list
Moonlight supports standard Android-mapped gamepads. Its documentation names Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, and PS4 controllers, while its Android listing also includes PS5 and Xbox Series controller families. Moonlight warns that certain controller-and-device combinations can have connection or latency problems, particularly some PlayStation controllers over Bluetooth. Playing away from home and using HDR
Remote access
Moonlight says internet streaming works for many internet service providers and may use its Internet Hosting Tool. Remote wake-up is not always possible, so Moonlight recommends leaving the host PC awake for sessions from outside the home. Moonlight FAQ

HDR streaming
Moonlight’s HDR guidance calls for an HDR10-capable client, a GPU that can encode HEVC Main 10, and an HDR10-enabled game. If the game relies on the operating system’s HDR mode, the host also needs an HDR display connected. Moonlight labels HDR10 streaming beta in its setup guide and lists known issues; do not assume HDR will work automatically on every Android device or game.
