One person runs the game and streams it to the others. Choose the game’s native online multiplayer when you want its own matchmaking, competitive rules, server features, or persistent world. The right option depends on the specific title: Remote Play Together is not a way to make every game online.
What’s the difference?
Remote Play Together streams a game’s local multiplayer experience from one player’s computer. The host runs the game; Steam sends its video and audio to guests and returns their inputs to the host. Steam says only the host needs to own and install the game for this play path. Steam’s Remote Play overview and Steamworks Remote Play documentation describe the feature.

Native online multiplayer is the mode and networking system built into the game. Depending on the title, it may use matchmaking and lobbies with peer-to-peer networking or game servers. Steamworks notes that lobbies gather players before a session; they do not provide the networking themselves. Its guidance suggests dedicated servers for highly competitive games and persistent servers, while smaller groups may suit matchmaking, lobbies, and peer-to-peer networking. These are developer guidelines, not a description of every game’s architecture. See Steamworks multiplayer guidance.

Can you play a local co-op Steam game online with a friend?
Often, if the game supports Remote Play Together and its developer has left the feature enabled. Steamworks says the feature is automatically enabled for games listed with Local Multiplayer, Local Co-op, or Shared/Split Screen capabilities, but developers can enable or disable it for individual titles. Check the game’s Steam listing and the game’s own mode information rather than assuming local multiplayer guarantees Remote Play Together support. Steamworks’ Remote Play documentation explains the feature’s availability.

Steam’s overview says a Remote Play Together session can include up to four players, or more with fast connections. Treat that as a broad Steam description, not a guaranteed player count for every title or connection. The game’s own limits and the quality of the host-to-guest connections matter. Steam’s overview does not state one minimum bandwidth or latency figure that applies universally.
How to start a Remote Play Together session
- Check support. Look at the game’s Steam page for Remote Play Together or a relevant local multiplayer capability, and confirm the game offers the mode your group wants.
- Have the host launch the game. The host’s computer runs it; guests receive a stream rather than launching their own copy for this session.
- Invite friends through Steam. Use the Steam friends list or overlay to send an invitation. Guests join through the options Steam provides for the session.
- Set up controls. Guests can use their own controllers. Steam also supports sharing keyboard and mouse control, though whether that is practical depends on how the game handles input.
When should you choose each?
Choose Remote Play Together when
- Your group wants a local co-op, local multiplayer, or split-screen game but cannot gather in the same room.
- The title supports Remote Play Together and the host can run and stream it.
- It is useful for one player to own and install the game rather than requiring every guest to do so for this play path.
- Your group is comfortable with streamed play and has suitable input devices.
Choose native online multiplayer when
- The game’s online mode supports the way your group wants to play.
- You need features such as its matchmaking, competitive rules, server options, or persistent-world behavior.
- The game’s own online mode better fits the group size, supported platforms, or session design.
If both approaches seem available, compare the specific game’s supported modes, player limits, controls, and connection setup. Steam’s general documentation cannot establish which method will perform better for a particular game, route, or household network.

What to know about connection quality
Remote Play Together relies on the host running the game and streaming it to guests, so the experience depends on the host’s hardware and the network path between the host and each participant. Steam describes the feature as using a fast internet connection but does not provide a universal minimum speed or latency in the cited overview. Avoid treating any single connection number as a guarantee.

Steamworks says its newer networking APIs can relay traffic through Valve’s network or connect directly when appropriate. Its Steam Datagram Relay documentation says relaying protects players’ IP addresses and can often improve ping or connection quality, but it does not promise that result for every game or route. Does everyone need to own the game?
No. For the Remote Play Together session Steam describes, only the host needs to own and install the game; additional players connect through Steam Remote Play streaming. This applies to the Remote Play Together play path, not automatically to a game’s separate native online mode, whose access requirements depend on that game.
