Steam’s October 1, 2026 Preview/Beta update lets users set Pyrowave’s manual Remote Play bitrate as high as 1 Gbit/s. Valve warns that “more bandwidth increases latency,” so the new ceiling is not a recommendation to use the maximum. It is a beta setting—not a promise of 1 Gbit/s streaming, a stable-client feature, or a way to guarantee better-looking, more responsive play.
What the 1 Gbit/s limit means
In its October 1, 2026 Steam Client Beta notes, Valve says Pyrowave manual bitrates can be increased up to 1 Gbit/s, followed by the warning: “more bandwidth increases latency!” The figure is a configuration ceiling, not a measured transfer rate or a broadband requirement. Valve does not publish latency measurements at particular bitrates, recommended settings for specific networks, or the conditions under which a device can sustain that maximum.

The change is in the Preview/Beta channel. The release notes do not give a date for a stable-client release, so the ceiling should not be described as available to every Steam user.

Valve’s notes do not name an ideal bitrate. They describe an improved automatic calculation intended to improve visual quality, while also exposing a higher manual ceiling. The practical choice depends on whether your connection can handle the setting without compromising responsiveness; there is no published bitrate-to-latency chart to identify a universal sweet spot.

| Choice | What Valve says | What is not established |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic | The beta improves automatic Pyrowave bitrate calculation for visual quality. Valve also adds the @PyrowavePSNR and @PyrowaveHeightFactor convars to tune that calculation. |
Valve does not state the resulting bitrate range or quantify image-quality or latency outcomes. |
| Manual | The beta raises the Pyrowave manual ceiling to 1 Gbit/s and warns that more bandwidth increases latency. | The notes do not recommend a particular manual value or report latency at the maximum. |
Valve has framed Remote Play settings as a bandwidth-versus-latency tradeoff before. In an October 25, 2023 client update, it described a low-latency networking option as one that “reduces latency at the cost of bandwidth” (Valve’s October 25, 2023 update). That description supports treating responsiveness and bandwidth as competing priorities; it does not quantify the effect of the 2026 Pyrowave setting.
Why your bitrate may have changed after updating
The beta resets Pyrowave bitrate to the automatic default. If you had chosen a manual value before installing the update, do not assume that it remains selected afterward. Check the current setting before streaming if you rely on a particular manual configuration.

Other Remote Play changes in the beta
- Valve says it fixed gradually increasing video latency when Pyrowave is used on slow network links.
- The update reduces audio dropouts.
- A recovery dialog was added for cases where the network cannot handle the current streaming settings.
- A Steam menu option was added to stop desktop streaming.
These are listed changes, not a guarantee that every connection or stream will improve. Valve does not provide test conditions or numerical results for them in the release notes.

What to do if a stream feels worse
- Check whether the update has switched Pyrowave bitrate back to automatic, as the beta resets the setting.
- If you selected a high manual bitrate, try a lower value or return to automatic and compare responsiveness on your own setup. The release notes do not prescribe a best value.
- If Steam presents the network-recovery dialog, follow its prompts to recover from settings the network cannot handle.
Steam Remote Play Together is a particular feature for streaming video, audio, input, and voice between players for local multiplayer games; it should not be conflated with every Remote Play scenario covered by these client notes. Valve introduced Remote Play Together in November 2019.
