Steam Playtest is a chance to try a test build; Steam Early Access is a paid purchase of a playable game that is still being developed. A Playtest may be limited or switched off by its developer. With Early Access, decide whether the game is worth its price in its current state, rather than counting on promised features or a completion date.
What is the difference between Steam Playtest and Early Access?
| What to compare | Steam Playtest | Steam Early Access |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Let players test a game build and help its developer gather feedback. | Sell a playable game while development continues. |
| Cost and access | Steam describes Playtest as a free feature. The developer controls how many players can enter. | You buy the current playable product. |
| Store presentation | Signup appears on the main game’s store page; the Playtest does not have its own separate store page. | The game is presented as an Early Access product, with information about its current state. |
| Availability | The developer can limit access or deactivate the Playtest. | Steam describes Early Access as a game that remains available and playable as development continues, rather than a temporary test that returns to Coming Soon. |
| What to expect | A test build; access to it does not promise access to the finished game. | An unfinished but playable product; planned features and timing are not guarantees. |
| Reviews and wishlists | Steam says Playtest avoids interfering with reviews and wishlists. Players can still wishlist or follow the main game. | A product release, not a test signup. |
These are distinctions between Steam’s features, not guarantees about the stability, quality, or content of a particular game. See Steam Playtest documentation and Steam Early Access documentation.

What should players expect from a Steam Playtest?
A Playtest is for trying a test build, not buying an unfinished product or securing the full game. The developer can open signups, limit how many players get access, or deactivate the Playtest. A request to join is therefore not a guarantee that you will be admitted or that access will remain available.
Signup is shown on the main game’s Steam store page, so you can request access while still following or wishlisting that game. Steam says Playtest participants are not under nondisclosure agreements by default; do not assume that what you see or share is confidential.

Valve’s Steamworks guidance draws the distinction directly: “If you’d rather temporarily test a game build with the option to take it down later, then a Steam Playtest is a better alternative.” Source: Valve, Steamworks Early Access documentation.
What should players expect from Steam Early Access?
Early Access means paying for a game that is playable now but still in development. Steam’s guidance treats the purchase as a decision about the product’s present value, not as a pre-purchase, crowdfunding pledge, or promise of a future delivery. The game should be worth its current price in its current state.

Developers are expected to explain what the present version contains and what remains. Plans for additional features, completion, or timing can change, so regard them as plans rather than guarantees. Valve puts the buyer’s perspective plainly: “Customers should be buying your game based on its current state, not on promises of a future that may or may not be realized.” Source: Valve, Steamworks Early Access documentation.

Before requesting a Playtest
- Check whether signup is currently open on the main game’s store page.
- Expect the developer to control the number of participants and the length of access.
- Think of it as an opportunity to try a test build and offer feedback, not as a route to guaranteed access to the eventual full game.
Before buying Early Access
- Read the current store description and developer questionnaire. Use them to understand the present version and its disclosed limitations.
- Check what you can play now and what is missing. Look for information about planned features, updates that may affect saves, and how the developer will receive feedback.
- Judge the current build against the current price. Buy only if the product as it exists now is worth that amount to you.
- Treat future plans as uncertain. Do not base the purchase on a promised feature or completion date.
Steam’s store review process documentation describes the need for clear information about what a product contains and what remains. Steam’s Early Access guidance also cautions developers against making specific promises about future events.

Is Steam Early Access the same as Advance Access?
No. Steam Advance Access is a pre-purchase benefit that can let some customers play before a broader release. Early Access instead describes a playable work in progress that is being sold during continued development. The similar wording does not make them the same feature. Valve states, “Steam Early Access is a completely different thing.” Source: Valve, Steamworks Advance Access documentation.
