They measure different things, so many teams will use both—and turn to a profiler when they need to find the cause of a performance problem.
First, distinguish the three kinds of “Steam performance data”
The phrase can refer to a local overlay, Steamworks partner reporting, or Steamworks APIs. None is interchangeable with developer-instrumented gameplay telemetry.
Steam client performance overlay: a local system view
The Steam overlay displays performance information while a game runs, including frame rate, generated-frame information, CPU and GPU details, and system memory use. It is principally a player-facing view of performance on that machine—not a general developer analytics backend. Valve’s overlay FAQ recommends more detailed profiling tools for investigating matters such as GPU blocking and core utilization.
The feature announcement dated June 30, 2025 described an initial rollout focused on Windows and common GPU hardware. Some platforms or older and less common GPUs may not expose the full set of information. Treat missing metrics as a coverage limitation, not evidence that the game has no issue. See Valve’s announcement for rollout details.

Steamworks partner reporting: an eligible Steam Deck cohort
Steamworks provides framerate information in the partner dashboard for games marked Steam Deck Verified. Valve says the figures are based on anonymized data from Steam Deck players who opted in. This makes the report a signal about that participating device population, not a representative report for all PC players or all Steam users.
Interpret the distribution with its collection conditions in mind: sampled time includes loading screens, and player-selected frame limits can affect the results. The dashboard’s eligibility and interpretation details are in the Steamworks Development announcement. The announcement states: “This data comes from Steam Deck players who have opted in to providing anonymized framerate data.”

Steamworks stats APIs: documented platform features
The Steamworks API reference describes ISteamUserStats functions for accessing and submitting stats, achievements, and leaderboards, and ISteamGameServerStats functions for game servers to set player stats and achievements. These interfaces support those documented Steam features. Their reference does not establish a general-purpose pipeline for arbitrary gameplay events, so do not assume they answer every custom analytics question. See the Steamworks API reference.
Which tool answers which developer question?
| Approach | Best fit | What the evidence represents | Main interpretation limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Steam client performance overlay | Quick inspection of frame behavior and system performance on a running game | One local machine and its available overlay metrics | Metric coverage varies by platform and hardware; detailed diagnosis needs a profiler |
| Steamworks Deck framerate reporting | Checking real-world framerate patterns for an eligible Steam Deck title | Anonymized reports from opted-in Steam Deck players | Deck-only, opt-in cohort; frame caps and loading screens affect distributions |
| Steamworks stats APIs | Implementing Steam stats, achievements, and leaderboards | Values and features defined through the documented interfaces | The reference does not establish arbitrary custom-event analytics |
| Developer-instrumented in-game telemetry | Answering chosen questions about gameplay events and game context | Events and context the game team elects to record | Coverage and interpretation depend on the team’s instrumentation design |
| SteamVR performance assessment | Investigating VR resolution and frame-time performance | Local VR assessment and related frame-time information | Compatibility and debugging aid, not player-behavior analytics |
Choose by the question you need to answer
“Is this machine rendering the game smoothly?”
Start with the Steam overlay for a quick view of frame rate, frame behavior, CPU/GPU information, and memory use where available. If the numbers show a symptom but not its cause, move to a more detailed profiler. The overlay is a starting point for observation, not a substitute for tools that trace bottlenecks.

“How does the game perform on Steam Deck in the wild?”
For a title marked Steam Deck Verified, inspect the Steamworks dashboard’s framerate distribution and feedback. Read the result as a bounded sample: participants opted in, it covers Steam Deck players, selected frame limits can shift results, and loading screens are included in sampled time. A distribution can reveal a pattern worth investigating, but it does not by itself identify the cause or describe performance on other hardware.
“Where do players get stuck, quit, or encounter a particular game state?”
Instrument the game for the specific events and context needed to answer that question. A local performance overlay reports machine-level signals; it does not provide the custom gameplay schema your team defines. Steam stats, achievements, and leaderboards can serve their documented purposes, but should not be treated as proof that arbitrary event capture is available through those interfaces.

“Is a VR configuration meeting performance expectations?”
Use SteamVR’s separate performance-assessment overlay and its frame-time logs. Valve documents average frame time over a rolling window of the last 32 frames for VERIFIED/PLAYABLE results. For transient frame-time violations, perfcriteria.txt lists the frame times associated with a threshold violation. This is VR compatibility and local debugging information, not behavioral analytics. See SteamVR’s compatibility documentation.
How to combine platform signals and telemetry
A useful division of labor is to let each source answer what it can actually observe:

- READY TO PLAY OUT OF THE BOX - Arrives fully assembled and tested with Windows 11 Home pre-installed, so your prebuilt gaming computer is ready to set up in minutes. Assembled in the USA, and backed by a one-year limited warranty and lifetime free technical support.
- Use the Steam overlay for a fast local check of available machine and frame metrics.
- Use Steamworks Deck reporting for an eligible title’s opted-in Steam Deck framerate patterns.
- Use in-game instrumentation for custom event questions that require gameplay context chosen by the developer.
- Use a profiler to investigate low-level causes such as GPU blocking or CPU/core utilization.
- Use SteamVR assessment and logs when the question concerns VR frame time or resolution.
These sources complement one another rather than compete. A platform report can show that a performance symptom appears in a particular population; telemetry can associate game-defined events or state with behavior; a profiler can help locate the technical cause. No one source should be expected to provide all three kinds of evidence.
Plan custom telemetry around its limits
Custom instrumentation makes the developer responsible for deciding what to capture, how much game context to attach, and how to interpret the resulting events. Define the question first, then choose only the events and context needed to answer it. A dataset with many events is not automatically useful if it cannot distinguish the outcomes the team cares about.
Collection design and governance also matter. Requirements depend on the game’s jurisdictions and design; the Steam API descriptions cited here do not establish legal or privacy obligations for a particular implementation. Assess those obligations for the actual game and the data it collects.
