Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →A Steam Machine owner says conductive EMI shielding tape stopped controller dropouts on the internal receiver, with materials costing $15 or less. That is one person’s report—not a verified fix, official Valve repair, or proven explanation of the fault. Because the modification involves opening the machine, owners with warranty coverage should contact Valve support before attempting it.
What the $15 fix involves
In an Oct. 11, 2026 Reddit post, a Steam Machine owner proposed wrapping the internal receiver’s 2.4 GHz antenna cable in double-conductive EMI shielding tape and using another piece of tape to connect the cable area to bare metal on the heatsink. The poster believes interference is responsible for the disconnections, but that cause has not been independently confirmed. Read the original post.

The poster says the materials cost $15 or less, potentially including a Torx driver if you do not already have one. That is the poster’s estimate, not a verified current price.

The owner says the controller stayed connected to the internal receiver for hours after the change, including while the CPU was at 90°C and the fan was above 1,600 RPM. The poster says dropouts had prevented playing that long beforehand. These are self-reported observations, not independently measured or reproduced results; the post does not establish long-term reliability or a success rate for other machines.

The evidence also does not establish how common the problem is, whether later production runs addressed it, or whether Valve endorses the modification. A question in a comment about whether the fault is common is not a prevalence estimate.
Try lower-risk options before opening the machine
Test the external wireless puck
Owners in a separate discussion describe forgetting the internal adapter, pairing the controller with the external wireless puck, and repositioning the puck for a clearer line of sight. Outcomes vary: some report fewer dropouts, while others describe continued problems or suspect software, interference, or system load. One commenter says the puck must be plugged into the Steam Machine to act as the receiver; when the controller is paired with the machine, the puck serves as a charger. These are user reports, not universal support instructions. See the owner discussion.

Contact Valve if the machine may be under warranty
For an in-warranty machine, contact Valve support or pursue warranty service before opening the enclosure. A commenter on the DIY post says a machine returned from Valve seemed to work, but had not been tested much; that anecdote does not establish eligibility, repair outcomes, or turnaround time.
PC Gamer’s June 22, 2026 review describes setup with the included wireless puck and says pairing with the internal receiver was awkward for the reviewer. It distinguishes the puck from the internal receiver, but does not diagnose the dropout fault or test the tape modification. Read the review.

DIY tape modification: the reported steps and risks
The Reddit post describes the following procedure. It is not a verified repair guide; opening the machine may damage it and may affect warranty coverage, as the post itself warns.
- Unplug the Steam Machine. The post calls for a Torx T9H screwdriver, but a commenter identifies the bit as T8. Confirm the correct fit before loosening screws; do not force a mismatched driver.
- Remove the back cover and additional screws, then slide out the internal board, following the post’s description.
- Carefully lift and disconnect the 2.4 GHz antenna connector. Do not pull on the cable.
- Wrap the antenna cable in double-conductive EMI shielding tape and reconnect it.
- Press a larger piece of tape into the gap so it contacts bare heatsink metal. Keep conductive tape away from exposed circuit-board components.
The post does not provide independent confirmation that these steps are safe or suitable for every Steam Machine. If you are not comfortable opening electronics or handling a small antenna connector, do not attempt the modification.

How the options compare
| Option | Open the machine? | Risk and reversibility | Cost and evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Conductive-tape modification | Yes | Highest hardware-intervention risk of these options; the post warns of possible damage and warranty effects. | Poster estimates $15 or less. One owner reports success; no independent replication. |
| External wireless puck | No | Reversible; owners report mixed results. | Cost is not stated in the cited discussion. The puck appears in owner troubleshooting and PC Gamer’s setup, but neither establishes a general cure. |
| Valve warranty support | No user-performed internal modification | Avoids a DIY internal change; eligibility and outcome depend on the case. | Cost, turnaround, and repair outcome are not established by the cited sources. One commenter’s experience is anecdotal. |
