Steam Link VR’s Vulkan Requirement: What Valve’s Current Notes Confirm

Valve’s current public Steam Link and SteamVR beta documentation does not confirm that a Vulkan requirement was removed. Here is what its latest inspected beta and support FAQ actually say.

Valve’s current public Steam Link support FAQ and inspected SteamVR beta notes do not document removal of a Vulkan requirement. The claim that Valve dropped a requirement that broke Steam Link VR—and that no beta contains it—therefore remains unverified by those sources. Valve’s latest inspected beta, SteamVR 2.18.1, is dated 23 September 2026 and lists streaming updates, but not a Vulkan change.

What Valve’s public documentation says about Vulkan

Valve’s Steam Link support FAQ describes supported host computers, operating systems, wireless networking, and headsets. It does not name Vulkan as a requirement, describe a Vulkan-related Steam Link failure, or provide a change history for an alleged removal.

The inspected SteamVR beta announcements likewise do not identify a Vulkan requirement removal. That absence means the reported change is not confirmed in these public sources; it does not establish that no undocumented code change occurred.

What the latest inspected SteamVR beta includes

Valve’s latest inspected entry is SteamVR beta 2.18.1, dated 23 September 2026. Its notes include tethered Quest support over USB when used with the Steam Link beta, fixes for video corruption, checkerboarding, and stuck streams, improved automatic bitrate selection, and an option for a Meta headset to override host frame rate when configured manually at OS level. The entry does not list a Vulkan-requirement change.

Valve’s 15 September 2026 notes for beta 2.17.10 say Meta Quest users should opt into both the Steam Link app beta and the SteamVR beta to receive the most up-to-date features. Treat this as beta-channel guidance, not evidence that a particular beta removes a Vulkan requirement.

Valve’s published Steam Link requirements

Valve says Steam Link streams games from a computer running Steam and SteamVR to supported Meta Quest, consumer HTC Vive Focus, and PICO headsets. It is free to download from the headset or phone store; business HTC headsets are not officially supported at this time.

Wireless Steam Link and tethered USB are different setup paths

Valve’s recent beta notes document a tethered Quest USB option. The 2.18.1 entry says it must be used with the Steam Link beta. Earlier beta notes describe an initial USB streaming path that can operate without Wi-Fi by opting into the Steam Client Beta. These are separate beta-enrollment details; Valve does not say USB resolves a Vulkan-related issue.

Setup Network dependency Beta details in Valve’s notes
Wireless Steam Link Valve’s FAQ specifies a 5 GHz channel and Wi-Fi 5 minimum. For current Meta Quest feature previews, Valve says to opt into both the Steam Link app beta and SteamVR beta.
Tethered Quest USB The initial USB path described in earlier beta notes can operate without Wi-Fi in the specified configuration. The 2.18.1 notes say USB support must be used with the Steam Link beta; the earlier no-Wi-Fi path requires the Steam Client Beta.

Valve’s notes do not provide comparative latency, image-quality, or stability measurements for these paths, so they do not support ranking one over the other on those grounds.

How to troubleshoot a current setup

  1. Check the published compatibility requirements. Confirm the host runs Steam and SteamVR on Windows 10 or newer, the GPU meets Valve’s listed minimum, and the headset model and software version appear in the FAQ.
  2. For wireless play, check the network. Valve specifies a 5 GHz channel and Wi-Fi 5 minimum.
  3. If you want current Quest beta features, enroll in both channels. Valve’s 2.17.10 notes direct Meta Quest users to opt into both the Steam Link app beta and SteamVR beta.
  4. If testing tethered Quest USB, use the required beta path. The 2.18.1 entry requires the Steam Link beta. The earlier no-Wi-Fi USB path also calls for the Steam Client Beta.
  5. Report unresolved SteamVR beta issues to Valve. Valve directs users to the SteamVR Bug Report forum and recommends including a system report when possible.

None of these steps confirms or supplies a workaround for the alleged Vulkan requirement. They follow Valve’s documented compatibility and beta guidance.
