If Steam Link cannot find your Linux PC, first make sure the PC is awake, Steam is running and signed in, and Remote Play is enabled. Then check that both devices are on the same local network and subnet, and that the network allows device-to-device connections. If the host appears but the stream fails, stutters, shows a black screen, or lacks controller input, troubleshoot that specific stage instead of treating every symptom as a discovery problem.
Identify where the connection fails
Steam Link problems fall into distinct stages. Note which one matches your screen before changing settings:

- Host missing or offline: Steam Link cannot discover the Linux PC. Check host availability, Remote Play, local network discovery, and firewall rules.
- Host visible, but the stream will not start: Discovery is working; check the network path and Steam’s firewall allowances.
- Stream starts, then stutters or freezes: The connection exists, but network timing or available bandwidth may be unstable.
- Black video: The stream starts, but desktop or game capture may be failing. A Linux display-session issue is one possibility, not a universal explanation.
- Video works, controller does not: Check the Linux host’s input-device permissions separately from host discovery.
Make sure the Linux host is available
- Wake or power on the Linux PC. A sleeping or powered-off host cannot accept a stream.
- Launch Steam on the Linux PC and sign in.
- In Steam’s settings, confirm that Remote Play is enabled. Steam support documentation sometimes uses the older “In-Home Streaming” wording; look for the current Remote Play setting rather than relying on that old label.
- Confirm that Steam Link and the host PC are connected to the same local network and, for discovery, the same subnet. Steam’s Remote Play FAQ specifically calls out same-subnet discovery conditions.
Check the Linux firewall and discovery port
Steam lists these ports for Remote Play:
| Protocol | Port | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| UDP | 27031 | Remote Play traffic |
| UDP | 27036 | Remote Play and initial host discovery |
| TCP | 27036 | Remote Play traffic |
| TCP | 27037 | Remote Play traffic |
Using the firewall manager for your Linux distribution, allow Steam the listed traffic with scope appropriate to your trusted local network. Firewall interfaces and rule syntax differ across distributions, so there is no single safe command sequence for every Linux PC. Do not copy Windows firewall steps onto Linux, and do not leave the firewall disabled as a workaround; Steam’s network and firewall troubleshooting guidance does not recommend that.
Also check whether another program is using UDP 27036. Steam identifies that port as part of its initial discovery protocol and advises that no other program use it. If you do not know how to identify the process safely on your distribution, consult its firewall or networking documentation rather than terminating an unfamiliar service.

Rule out network isolation
Being connected to the same Wi-Fi name does not always mean devices can communicate directly. Guest Wi-Fi, access-point or client isolation, captive portals, and some public, workplace, or school networks can block discovery or peer connections. Steam describes these network types as unsupported for Remote Play in many cases in its Steam Link network settings guidance.
- For a clean test, connect both devices to the same trusted home router, not a guest network.
- Check the router’s settings for “AP isolation,” “client isolation,” or a similar option that prevents local devices from communicating.
- If a captive portal is involved, complete its sign-in first; for troubleshooting, a private home network is a better test.
- Try Ethernet for the host, the Steam Link device, or both if possible. A known-good Ethernet cable can help isolate Wi-Fi interference, but it cannot fix a Steam sign-in, Remote Play setting, or firewall problem.
If the stream connects but stutters or freezes
Turn on Steam’s Remote Play performance overlay and watch its cyan network-time line. Steam identifies large spikes in that line as a sign of variable network timing, which can accompany stutters or freezes. This points toward a network-quality problem rather than a host-discovery failure.

- Test over Ethernet where practical, then compare the result with Wi-Fi.
- Reduce competing network traffic, such as large downloads or other high-bandwidth streams.
- If using Wi-Fi, try a 5 GHz network when the signal is strong enough; a weaker signal can erase the benefit of the band.
- Lower streaming quality or bandwidth, or choose Fast/Balanced quality, and check whether playback becomes steadier.
- Check for router firmware updates if the connection remains unreliable.
Change one thing at a time and retest. That makes it easier to tell whether the cause is wireless interference, competing traffic, stream settings, or the router.
If video is black or controller input fails
Black video on a Linux host
A ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux issue filed for Kubuntu described a black screen while streaming the desktop and was closed as a duplicate of a Wayland issue on April 1, 2026. This establishes that a Linux display-session problem can occur; it does not establish that Wayland causes every black screen. If the host is visible and the stream starts but video stays black, record your Linux distribution, desktop session (Wayland or X11), GPU and driver, Steam version, whether audio or input works, and relevant Steam logs when reporting the problem.

Controller input on a Linux host
For streamed game-controller support, Steam needs read and write access to /dev/uinput or /dev/input/uinput, according to the Steam Remote Play FAQ. This is a Linux input-device permission requirement for controller streaming—not a general prerequisite for Steam Link to detect the host. Permission management varies by distribution, so use your system’s documented method rather than applying an unverified, broad permission change.
Retest in a way that isolates the cause
After changing a setting, retry the same connection and note whether the symptom moved to a different stage. Compare a wired attempt with Wi-Fi, a trusted same-subnet network with an isolated one, and the firewall with narrowly scoped Steam allowances against its prior state. Test controller input only after confirming that discovery and video work; that keeps an input-permission issue from being mistaken for a host or network failure.
