Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →If a Steam game won’t launch from an external SSD, first check that the drive is connected and its Steam library is available, then repair the library folder and verify the game files. A launch failure does not by itself mean the SSD is faulty. Steam supports game libraries on alternate drives; its warning about external drives concerns installing the Steam client itself, which it says is not recommended because of potential performance issues.
1. Check that Steam can see the external SSD library
- Connect the SSD and confirm it appears in your operating system’s file manager. If it is missing or keeps disconnecting, address that connection or system-level issue before repairing the game.
- In Steam, open Settings > Storage and check whether the library on the external drive is listed. Steam lets you add an alternate library location from Storage.
- If the game is not listed in that library, confirm Steam is looking at the correct library folder before reinstalling. A drive-letter change or manually moved folder can leave Steam pointing to a different location. Steam’s guidance does not give one universal recovery procedure for every operating system or drive setup.
Steam supports installing games in library folders on other drives and moving an installed game between configured libraries. That is separate from installing the Steam client on an external hard drive: Steam does not recommend the latter because it may cause performance issues. Steam: Steam Library Folders

2. Repair the library folder and verify the game
Repair the folder if Steam reports a permissions or library problem
In Steam, go to Settings > Storage, open the … menu beside the affected library, and choose Repair Folder. Steam documents this option for library-folder issues, including permissions problems. Steam: Steam download and update issues
Verify the game files
- Open Library and right-click the affected game.
- Select Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files.
- Let the check finish; it may take several minutes. Steam can replace damaged or missing game files.
A small number of local configuration files may fail verification normally, so an individual mismatch does not necessarily mean the repair failed. Steam: Verify Integrity of Game Files

Move the game through Steam if it is in the wrong library
If the installation is in the wrong configured library, use Steam’s Storage controls to move the installed game to the correct library rather than moving its folder manually. Menu labels can change as the client is updated. Steam: Move a game installation
3. Match the next fix to the error you see
“Failed to Start Game (Missing Executable)”
This message can mean that a game file is missing or blocked. Check your antivirus software’s quarantine and blocked-item history for the game’s executable. If you find an item there, follow the security software’s guidance and only restore or allow it if you trust the game installation. Then restart Steam and verify the game files using the steps above. Do not leave antivirus protection disabled as a general fix. If the error remains, contact Steam Support and provide an uncropped screenshot, a system report, and the troubleshooting details requested. Steam: Failed to Start Game (Missing Executable)

The game stays at “Preparing to Launch”
- Update your operating system and device drivers.
- Verify the game files.
- Temporarily close nonessential software that could interfere with the game, then test again.
- Check the game’s current system requirements against your computer.
Steam notes that causes vary across hardware and software configurations. If its general steps do not help, contact the game developer for title-specific support. Steam: Games do not launch after “Preparing to Launch”
A prerequisite installer appears or may have been canceled
Some Windows games run prerequisite installers, such as DirectX or Visual C++ components, when first launched. If an installer was canceled or blocked, the game may not start. Steam says these installers are located in the game’s installation folder or a subfolder. Use the files supplied with the game or its official support guidance; do not download prerequisite installers from untrusted sites. Steam: Common Redistributables

A launch option seems to be the suggested fix
Do not add a launch option just because it appears in a general Steam list. Steam says its commonly listed options are for GoldSrc and Source games and do not apply to most third-party titles. Use a launch option only when the affected game’s developer or support documentation recommends it. Steam: Set Launch Options
4. Know when the SSD itself needs attention
If Steam still lists the library and other files on the drive remain accessible, start with Steam’s repair and game-file checks rather than assuming the SSD has failed. If the drive disappears from the operating system or disconnects during use, troubleshoot that connection and the drive separately. The Steam guidance cited here does not establish external SSD disconnections or cable faults as universal causes of game launch failures.

A replacement external SSD may make sense if you need more storage, but buying one is not a first-line fix for a library Steam cannot recognize or game files that need repair. No particular SSD model, speed, capacity, or compatibility is established here; check your computer’s connection requirements and confirm the drive is consistently available before choosing storage.
