-dxlevel is a Steam launch option used by some GoldSrc and Source games to request a particular DirectX feature level at startup. It is a compatibility setting, not a universal graphics upgrade—and it does not necessarily switch the game to a different Direct3D renderer. Whether a value works depends on the game and its engine branch.
What does -dxlevel do?
Steam describes -dxlevel [level] as a launch option that forces a specific DirectX version when a supported game starts. The option is relevant to games using GoldSrc and Source; it is not a setting that applies to every Steam game. See Steam’s launch-options documentation.

The requested level is better understood as a feature or compatibility target than as a guarantee about the renderer itself. The Valve Developer Community explains that changing -dxlevel or the related mat_dxlevel variable does not make Source run Direct3D 8 or an earlier renderer. Source uses Direct3D 9, while some third-party branches use Direct3D 11 or 12; a lower feature level may instead disable features or cause assets and shaders to use fallbacks. See Valve Developer Community’s DirectX Versions page.
Which values can a game accept?
Steam’s general launch-options page lists 80, 81, 90, 95, and 98 as example values. Its separate video and display troubleshooting guide suggests trying 90, 81, or 80 for supported games. These lists are not a universal compatibility matrix: a value documented for one game or Source branch may not be accepted by another.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
- DirectX 7 / value 70: Steam says its games no longer support DirectX 7 as a launch option and warns that using it can cause crashes. Do not try it as a general fix.
- Values 80 and 81: They appear in Steam’s troubleshooting guidance, but that does not mean every game supports them. Facepunch’s guidance for Garry’s Mod says DXLevel 81 may be unstable and DirectX 8 is not officially supported there.
- Values 90, 95, and 98: They appear in Steam’s general list, but the right value still depends on the specific game and its current support instructions.
Source branches beginning with Left 4 Dead dropped the older DirectX levels system, according to the Valve Developer Community. A newer Source branch may therefore ignore or handle the option differently from an older game.
How to enter a recommended value in Steam
Use the affected game’s official support instructions to choose a value before changing the launch options. Steam’s procedure is:
Rank #2
- Supported Multi-Platform:Switch/Switch 2 (NO support wake-up function)/iOS/Android/Windows PC (Notice:Not compatible with Xbox, PlayStation or GeForce Now, For game platforms not mentioned, please consult customer service before buying)
- Connection modes:Wired/Bluetooth/Wireless Dongle(Connect to PC via Bluetooth : Select iOS (phone) mode, but it's not recommended; Dongle is more stable)
- 【Innovative Intelligent Interactive Screen】Manba One V2 wireless game controllers create a new era of controller screens; Equipped with a 2-inch display, no App & software needed, you can set the pc controller directly through the screen visualization, More convenient operation
- 【Micro Switch Button】Manba One wireless controller has Micro Switch Button and ALPS Bumper; The 6-axis gyroscope function makes switch games more immersive
- 【Customize Your Own Controller】The intelligent interactive screen allows you to easily set vibrations, buttons, joysticks, lights, etc., without the need for complex key combinations; 4 configurations can be saved to unlock your own gameplay for different games; The 4 back keys support macro definition settings, and you can activate the set character's ultimate move with one click
- Open Library in Steam.
- Right-click the affected game and select Properties.
- Open Launch Options.
- Enter the exact argument recommended for that game, such as
-dxlevel 90, if its support guidance calls for it. - Close the Properties window and start the game to check whether the problem is resolved.
Do not assume that Steam’s examples are instructions to cycle through every value. The official Steam troubleshooting page gives examples for supported games; the game’s own current support page should take precedence.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhen should you try -dxlevel?
Consider it only when the game’s support guidance recommends a specific value for a startup, display, or compatibility problem. A lower level is not an established way to improve performance on modern hardware. Depending on the game, changing it can remove graphical features, trigger fallback rendering behavior, fail to have an effect, or contribute to instability.

It introduces powerful new features such as gyro settings, stick curve adjustments, and button-to-mouse mapping, giving you deeper customization and more control than ever before.
It is also distinct from the Source console variable mat_dxlevel, which Valve Developer Community discusses alongside the launch option. Do not treat the two names as interchangeable instructions: follow the specific steps documented for your game.
Why the same setting behaves differently between games
Support varies with the game’s engine branch and updates. Steam’s general documentation covers examples, not every game’s supported values, and older DirectX-level behavior was dropped in some later Source branches. Facepunch’s Garry’s Mod startup guidance, for example, cautions about the stability of DXLevel 81 and says DirectX 8 is not officially supported for that game.

- Multi-Platform PC Gaming Controller: Working with Switch, PC, Android, and iOS devices via Bluetooth, wired, and wireless dongle connections.
- Hall Effect Joysticks: Delivering enhanced recentering performance for smoother control and superior anti-drift capability. Plus, with anti-friction rings.
- 2-Way Trigger Lock: With trigger stops, gamers can toggle between short and long pull positions. Additionally, gamers can activate hair trigger mode by pressing M+LT/RT (triggers must be in the long pull position).
- 1000Hz Polling Rate: This ensures that your inputs are registered almost instantaneously, minimizing lag and maximizing your performance during competitive play.
- Mechanical Circular D-pad: Designed for quick reactions and accuracy in every direction, this D-pad elevates your gaming experience with superior responsiveness.
If the game stops launching or its graphics become worse after changing the option, remove the added -dxlevel argument from the same Steam Launch Options field and try launching again. If the issue persists, use that game’s official recovery or support instructions rather than trying additional values at random.
Does changing dxlevel require new hardware?
No purchase is established as a prerequisite. The documented steps involve a Steam launch setting and game-specific compatibility guidance; they do not require a new graphics card or another accessory.
