Choose a gaming PC if you want a fixed desktop setup, a larger display, or performance tuned to a specific PC build. There is no universal performance winner: a gaming PC can mean many different hardware configurations. The deciding question for Deck is whether the games you play most work well on it.

| Where you play | Portable, handheld play with an integrated screen and controls. | Best suited to a desk or other stationary setup; the display and peripherals depend on your chosen setup. |

Will your Steam games work on Steam Deck?
Not necessarily in the same way they do on a Windows gaming PC. Valve’s compatibility ratings are shown in the Steam library and store, and consider usability factors such as controls, display legibility, Proton and middleware support, including anti-cheat. Check the current rating for the games you care about most in Valve’s Steam Deck Verified program.

Ratings are useful screening information, not a permanent guarantee. Valve says it continues reviewing the catalog, and game updates can change behavior. Prioritize games that you play frequently, especially those that depend on a launcher, anti-cheat system, or unusual controls.

SteamOS is Linux-based and uses Proton to run many Windows games. Valve’s SteamOS page says “over 18,000 titles last we checked,” but the statement is undated, so it should not be treated as a current count or as proof that a particular game will work well. Checking your own titles is more useful than relying on a broad total.
#1 Best Overall
- 1TB NVMe SSD
- 1280 x 800 HDR OLED display with premium anti-glare etched glass, 7.4" Diagonal display size up to 90Hz refresh rate
- Wi-Fi 6E
- 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)
- Carrying case with removable liner
Valve says non-Steam games can be run through Proton, but setup and compatibility may vary. Its Steam Deck FAQ also says an internet connection is needed for downloading and online multiplayer. Do not assume an external store or launcher will work without extra setup.
What the current Steam Deck OLED offers
Valve lists OLED configurations with a 7.4-inch, 1280×800 HDR display capable of refresh rates up to 90Hz, 16GB of memory, a 50Wh battery, and either a 512GB or 1TB SSD. These are product specifications, not a head-to-head performance result against a particular gaming PC. See Valve’s Steam Deck OLED page for current configurations and availability.

Battery life depends on the game
Valve estimates 3–12 hours of OLED gameplay, depending on content and settings. Treat that as a broad range, not a promise for any one game or a fixed play session.

Valve says Deck models support microSD expansion, and games stored on a card appear in the library. A microSD card is an option if you need more game storage, not a requirement to use the device. USB-C connections and a compatible dock can connect an external display and peripherals; a dock is likewise optional. Valve describes desktop mode and external-display use in its Docking Station information.

Choose based on how you play
Pick Steam Deck if portability is the point
- You want to play away from a desk or move easily between rooms.
- You prefer integrated gamepad controls and a handheld Steam interface.
- Your most-played games have current compatibility ratings that meet your expectations.
- You are comfortable with battery life that varies by game and settings.
Pick a gaming PC if you want a tailored desktop setup
- You mainly play at a desk and want to choose a larger display, keyboard, mouse, or controller.
- You want to select hardware for particular performance targets rather than choosing a handheld with fixed specifications.
- You have games whose Deck compatibility, launcher setup, anti-cheat support, or controls are a concern.
How to make the comparison useful
- List the games you actually play. Start with your regular games rather than the size of your full library.
- Check each game’s current Deck rating. Look in the Steam store or library and pay close attention to titles with launchers, anti-cheat, or unusual controls.
- Set your play location and screen preference. Decide whether you need handheld play or primarily want a desk setup with a larger display.
- Compare a specific PC configuration. Match the hardware, display, games, and settings you care about. Without a defined PC build and controlled benchmarks, a general claim that one option is faster would be misleading.
- Count the whole setup. Include a display and peripherals if you need them for the PC, and any optional storage or dock you want for Deck. Check live regional pricing and availability before buying.
