For gaming, the Steam Deck OLED generally lasts longer than the original 2023 ASUS ROG Ally Z1 Extreme in the cited direct tests. The LCD Steam Deck and that Ally were nearly tied in one synthetic gaming benchmark. The answer changes with the Steam Deck generation, the Ally model, and the game and settings, so there is no single runtime that applies to every device or session.
Battery capacities explain part of the difference
The Steam Deck LCD and original ROG Ally each have a 40Wh battery; the Steam Deck OLED has a 50Wh battery, according to the models compared by GamersNexus. Capacity is useful context, not a runtime guarantee: power draw varies with the game, display settings, and performance mode.

GamersNexus lists APU power ranges of 4–15W for the Deck variants and 9–30W for the original Ally Z1 Extreme. A higher capacity can help, but a device drawing more power can use that capacity faster.
What the published tests found
Synthetic gaming benchmark: nearly a tie
In Tom’s Guide’s PCMark 10 gaming battery test, the original ROG Ally lasted 1 hour 43 minutes and the Steam Deck lasted 1 hour 40 minutes. The three-minute gap is specific to that synthetic benchmark and does not establish a general winner for real games. Tom’s Guide’s original comparison is here.

Game tests: OLED Deck ahead in the cited comparisons
GamersNexus compared the Steam Deck OLED, Deck LCD, and original Ally Z1 Extreme in game workloads. In its Dead Cells comparison, devices ran at their own native resolution and refresh rate, a setup intended to approximate default use but not to isolate battery capacity alone. The review reported a 47% OLED Deck advantage over the Ally in Performance mode for that specific comparison. Its F1 2023 test controlled resolution for a more direct comparison. Neither result should be treated as a universal percentage across games or settings.
Notebookcheck also reported 4.2 hours for the Steam Deck OLED versus 1.2 hours for the Ally Z1 Extreme in its gaming comparison. Those are results from Notebookcheck’s particular test, not a promise of runtime in any given game; its Steam Deck OLED review includes other scenarios with different outcomes.

Light-use test: browsing is a different workload
In Tom’s Guide’s continuous web-browsing test at 150 nits, the original Ally lasted 5 hours 51 minutes and the Steam Deck lasted 3 hours 50 minutes. Web browsing is not gaming, so these numbers answer a different question and should not be combined with the gaming results.

What Valve says about Steam Deck runtime
Valve describes the Steam Deck as providing several hours of play for most games. It estimates approximately 7–8 hours for lighter activities such as game streaming, small 2D games, and browsing; that is a manufacturer estimate for those use cases, not a heavy-game runtime guarantee. See Valve’s hardware specifications.

Compare the exact versions and conditions
“Steam Deck” and “ROG Ally” each cover different hardware. These cited comparisons concern the Deck LCD or OLED and the original 2023 Ally, including the Z1 Extreme configuration. Do not apply their results to the ROG Ally X or later Xbox-branded Ally models.

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
- Identify the exact handheld version and processor configuration.
- Use the same game and comparable gameplay sequence.
- Match brightness, resolution, refresh rate, frame-rate cap, and performance mode where possible.
- Label the workload accurately: actual gameplay, synthetic benchmark, web browsing, or manufacturer estimate.
There is a trade-off between realistic and controlled testing. Running each handheld at its own native display settings better reflects a typical out-of-box experience, but leaves more variables unmatched. Matching resolution and other settings improves comparability, though it may not represent how people normally play. For example, Tom’s Guide lists the original Ally’s screen as 1920×1080 at 120Hz and the original LCD Deck’s as 1280×800 at 60Hz; different output targets make default-use results harder to interpret.

If gaming time away from an outlet is your priority and you are choosing between the models in these game tests, the Steam Deck OLED is the stronger bet for longer play. If comparing the original Ally with the LCD Deck, the synthetic PCMark result is effectively close, while the cited game tests favor the OLED Deck; neither benchmark predicts exactly how long your own games will run. For travel, judge the specific game and settings you plan to use rather than relying on a single headline runtime.
